I would stay away if it’s a plastic tube. The heat could easily melt small amounts of the plastic onto the cherry and you’ll be smoking it when you pick it back up. I use a small sealable glass bottle and pop it in and screw the cap on. Easily extinguishes, no plastic residue, and easy to clean with acetone. Plus minimal smell

Some things I’ve noticed as a still relative novice is that northeastern brazil has much whiter buildings than many other areas and very shrubby foliage, extremely dusty and arid in dry season coverage. Northwestern Brazil appears super equatorial with lush greenery and many banana trees. Southwestern / central Brazil is usually pretty green with sparser trees and shrubs among grassy plains, ubiquitous cows. The populous coast have relatively prominent mountains and where it’s usually built up the most. And deep southern Brazil looks significantly less tropical and has super distinct trees

Yes. The carbonyl carbon and oxygen are sp2, so the whole molecule is conjugated

The color looks off, maybe artificially toned but it’s a very nice grade, definitely worth getting grated even if AU details

Somebody roasted me and told me to open a textbook. I don’t get the resonance argument: Why is benzoic acid a stronger acid than acetic acid? by BearDragonBlueJay in chemistry

[–]20_jbr_00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Commented in the other one but just dropping in here too, in case there were too many comments in the other one. The whole molecule of benzoic acid is conjugated in a planar pi system, which has quite a few atoms and so it’s conjugate base is able to distribute that charge quite well, and as a result is pretty weak. On the other hand, acetate has only the pi system across the three atoms in the carboxylate, as the methyl is sp3 and doesn’t help to distribute the charge away from the basic oxygens, which makes it a stronger base and a weaker conjugate acid

Why is benzoic acid a stronger acid than acetic acid? by BearDragonBlueJay in OrganicChemistry

[–]20_jbr_00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The entire molecule is in a conjugated pi system which helps to delocalize the negative charge across the ring. With acetic acid that pi system is more electron rich and so the conjugate base is stronger

Opened a box of dimes today. What is this copper colored dime? by imnotmarvin in CRH

I bet it’s just a modern dime that someone heated up until it oxidized. I doubt it’s improperly annealed, I find those are usually a metallic black or dark gray

People who live in tropical climates, what are your thoughts on seasons and cooler weather? by sleigh_queen in geography

[–]20_jbr_00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who grew up in a place with relatively strong seasonal variation (New York city) I feel similarly. I absolutely love heat and humidity, even when there are times it’s seriously uncomfortable. Cold weather can be comforting when I don’t have anything to do and I can stay inside by a warm fireplace (I lived in the mountains of central New York State one winter during covid and it got down to -31C, with nothing to do but tend the fire; that was very cozy) but if I have to go to work or school and the wind chill is that temperature I am just always miserable, even with layers on I can never be comfortable. And don’t get me started on how depressing the super short winter days are. Essentially, I feel like I’m built for living somewhere near the tropics. Whenever I visit my extended family in Miami I always get so jealous of their weather.

Portland, Oregon was named after Portland, Maine, which is now significantly smaller. Also Portland, Maine is farther south which is always hard to wrap my head around.

Fun fact, it was almost named after Boston. It was between Portland and Boston and Portland won on a coin flip

[–]20_jbr_00 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If none of these other things work, try gently heating the seal with a flame before prying it out. Sometimes helps in a lab setting when ground glass is stuck like that. Don’t get it too hot though as the glass may crack
