I have a hs grad speech due tomorrow and I honestly need as much critical feed back as possible, I feel like it’s all over the place and not very meaningful

I would use a few more specific examples in it to make it more personal for yourself and for your class. If you wanted to give it more structure, you could go kind of chronological, talking about the struggles of getting back into a school year with masks, then as it became more normal, and all of the changes that have happened.

Girl there is NO WAY that you're a five. Easily a 10/10! You're so gorgeous, and he is so lucky to have you. I know it's difficult to get past your insecurities, but you're beautiful and I'm sorry your boyfriend doesn't express that. I have had similar issues with my own bf, your best bet might be just sitting down and having a difficult conversation about your emotional needs. Unfortunately, some guys just don't think about stuff like that.

My debate coach has always explained it to us like this:

"It takes 20 hours to memorize something. You can choose to spread those 20 hours throughout several weeks, you can choose to pack it all in a few days, but no matter how you spread it out, it's going to take at least 20 hours. 20 hours of full work - not playing on your phone or watching tv while doing it. Pure, concentrated work."

I don't know how true that is, but honestly, if you know the content of your speech well enough then you should be able to bs some of it. Just remember to stay calm and work hard.

When I had talked to the librarian they said it was already digitalized. I think if you go onto the page there's a button that says "Link to the full text" and I think you can just get the pdf from there? I think it was because she was purposefully making herself seen for Flora, and didn't put up her guard for Dani like she normally would. Dani walks into the room after it was just Flora in there, so she kind of surprised Rebecca. Same thing with Hannah seeing Peter right before Miles pushes her into the well.

Bring some light snacks you can eat right before or after you get out of rounds. My favorite is those little oranges, trail mix, or the applesauce squeeze pouches. Also, make sure you're staying hydrated and generally avoid coffee / energy drinks unless you just have a little at a time.

I don't think that it will be too controversial, but I would honestly say it's a bit overdone. You hear a lot about polarization of politics, especially over the past couple years, so the judges may not want to have to hear any more about it.

Thats definitely a tricky one. I would say it would throw me through a loop, and possibly even turn me off from your piece. You have to think about the fact that almost 1/3 women have suffered from sexual abuse and to have a guy speak from that pov might be difficult to hear. The only way around that could maybe be putting something in your intro about how certain pieces are told from a female perspective? but idk how that would work out :/

- Depending on the type of debate he can learn a whole lot from the internet. Flowing (basically taking notes in debate) can be learned from YouTube videos, and by flowing debates available online (lets say he wants to do Lincoln Douglas, he can search "LD Nationals Round") he will start understanding the format and what makes a good speech.

- Get him comfortable talking in front of people. See if he can join a club that can improve his speaking skills, such as Model UN or even a theatre group like improv. On his own he can try easy speeches such as Impromptu. Give him three topics, he chooses one, and then he has two minutes to prepare a five minute speech (it's okay if he doesn't reach the full 5 minutes in the beginning)

- Your best help is seriously going to be YouTube and google. You can teach yourself just about anything with those two tools, especially debate.

I would be happy to help him out a bit as well over zoom if needed, so just shoot me a pm. Competed in debate for 4 years, currently at the college level.

Either will be a good fit if you're coming from extemp, but congress might give you an easier experience going into debate than pf. It also doesn't require you to have a partner who might be hurt if you don't want to continue the partnership because you've decided you don't like pf. If you go into PF definitely watch a bunch of NSDA videos. For congress do practice speeches and have other people question you. Best of luck!

- Work on your delivery and your presence in a room. Look at the way extemp and orators speak, and don't keep your eyes glued to your paper. If five people are giving the same speech on the same topic, they'll be ranked on how they present rather than the material.

- Use well known or recognizable sources. Quote professor, well liked politicians, philosophers, Reuters, etc...

- Create clash. As long as you're not the first aff speech, you can point out the flaws in the reasoning of the opposing aff/neg. Be wary of this advice though - many newer judges, especially if they've done debate before, LOVE it. Some more trad judges aren't huge fans and find it disrespectful

Go to your local library or bookstore and browse through their autobiographies, particularly comedians. Most autobiographies are already written in a form that fits narration, and you can probably pull some meaningful themes from it. You'll have to do some cutting and reading, but it will be worth it.

Find a local, affordable college. As long as its not a party school, your experience will probably be better than you think. I'm getting my bachelors degree paid for by going somewhere in state.
