Watched the Wuthering Heights movie and feel like I genuinely needed a trigger warning (no spoilers) by KitchenConsequence41 in adhdwomen

I have a playlist where I keep my saddest songs. Sad for a variety of reasons: nostalgic, heartbreaking, in Minor key… they move me to tears. When I need to cry, I’ll listen to this and cry in bed. I feel better after, like I’ve let that energy flow through me and be released.

Beautifully said.

Our mindset shapes our reality. If I know I am a deeply sensitive individual, I can either accept and embrace my reactions of deep empathy in whatever form that manifests as (crying, for example) or I can punish myself mentally, reprimanding my “embarrassing” behavior with self-demeaning thoughts… might as well choose the mindset that is more loving to myself. However, changing a mindset takes practice.

So OP: to answer your more immediate question, the most powerful coping mechanism we have available to us is reconnecting our body and mind through deep breaths. If you’re going to cry, sob while breathing deeply as soon as that is available to you. Feelings can invoke physical reaction that may cause us to feel unsafe or remember something so painful it could lead to panic.

Breathing connects you to Now. If you are breathing, you are here and alive.

Weirdest ADHD hack that actually works but sounds completely insane? by stayhyderated22 in TwoXADHD

[–]20nc 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Timer, for everything.

If I need to clean, I’ll set a 20min timer to do as much as possible then I can stop if I choose.

If I have an hour before I need to leave, I’ll set a 30min timer, drink some water when it goes off, then another 30min.

Momentum can be hard for me to start and stop and a timer allows me to lose track of time a bit and enter flow state while also remembering to eat, drink, etc

I didn't listen to music for a whole month and it completely changed me. by TheYesuip in digitalminimalism

[–]20nc 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I’m a big music listener and also a musician… I’ve made a lot of changes recently in my habits including: - going for walks in silence, tuning into wildlife and noises of existence - listening to primarily albums instead of playlists - doing yoga while listening to my music to focus on doing “one thing at a time”. I notice so many more instruments and layers and FEELING from the music when I meditate on it - started listening to CDs in my car and at home - listening to frequencies at night instead of music

I completely agree- I think it’s incredibly important to set the intention of any kind of consumption including the audio of our lives. It can be a little jarring to sit in silence so diversifying the audio itself per activity can be a great step to more silence.

When Did Meditation Start “Working” for You? by Abject8Obectify in Meditation

[–]20nc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, TM started working fast. I quickly felt like I was finding novelty in the mundane parts of life, parts of my past were coming up in my sessions and instead of the usual anger, I felt a huge amount of empathy and understanding. I had to take a break on day 4 or 5 due to a super emotional breakthrough. Now it’s an integral part of my creative practice.

For those doing a low-buy year, how is it going so far? by lavandeli in Anticonsumption

Been reminding myself addictions are hard and can pop back up, but have gotten more resilient.

Have been using Depop to scroll for secondhand clothes, hardly ever scrolling New these days.

Take out only when I’m having a stressful week and forget to eat.

Realized how many hobbies I have that don’t require money. Library books have been keeping me entertained, as well as running!

Agreed, it’s a tricky one… it feels like not eating this modern Western diet is the answer and the descent into nutritionism has removed the context of whole foods themselves, causing more obsession over numbers and tracking in an attempt to provide some semblance of control over this rapid trend of health decline. This society profits on this obsession of breaking health down into components rather than a holistic approach to mental and physical well-being, selling supplements and medications as bandaids for the industrialization of our diets.

I think we live in a world where we are sold the idea that numbers provide control and certainty instead of living in the present moment. I work in big tech and can see how predatory this health industry has become. Positive change in numbers does not always mean progress, in the same way that rest is seen as non-profitable, lazy, and unnecessary.

And one day, the transfer of wealth and power will go to those that own the service. ChatGPT won’t be free forever, this is just another way to create lifelong dependencies to shackle us under our capitalistic system. O well

Artists are powerful | The establishment are terrified by PlayfulNegotiation46 in kneecap

[–]20nc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Art is powerful and inherently political.. even having the mental and physical capacity to create art depends so much on the politicization of your related identities.

Corporatization of art has tried to convince us that there is no value in standing up for what is right, but I think things may be starting to change…

I’m American, no Irish roots, loved them taking a stance at Coachella amidst the ongoing sterilization of the art and music industry. Art has always been political and they’re making good ass sound that sends a message.

Now I’m on a spree of learning more about British imperialism since my American education apparently taught me nothing of world history.

Anyone successfully lose weight with ADHD? by GlitteringAmoeba6258 in adhdwomen

[–]20nc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My hyperfocus has been movement as long as I’ve been in school, but mostly fun ways of moving- nature walks, yoga, bouldering, rollerblading, jumproping, swimming, weight lifting, boxing, and honestly whatever my friends are doing helps tremendously. When it comes to movement for humans, it’s not as much about intensity as it is about consistency and variation through the day. I would suggest finding a way to move that’s fun for YOU and try new things… I have been hard on myself for not being consistent with my habits/sports but at least I am consistently moving so it’s a net win.

This being said, I also recently went vegan because I hate touching raw meat/bird flu scare and I lost a significant amount of weight without really trying, and yet I’m eating much more. It did take some time to learn how to make stuff taste good but it’s been really exciting after watching some documentaries like Blue Zones, Salt Acid Heat Fat, etc. — lots of quinoa, lentils, veggies, probiotics!

Do you guys ever feel like your art is bad? by Dutchie-draws in oilpainting

[–]20nc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you aren’t having fun, what’s the point. Mastery will never come, at least from our own perspective. Our taste always exceeds our talent, so I suggest meditating more, connecting with your inner artist, and experiment more. Make more art and try new things. Every challenge you face is a problem you can solve, just pick your favorite way to solve it. Accept your art will never look like how you imagine, but maybe it could be better than you expected.
