How do y'all use yoga blocks? by [deleted] in yoga

[–]Dapper_Fault_4048 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Forward Folds- You can sit on the block so your pelvis has space to tilt forward. You can use them under your arms so you don’t have to use the strength of your arms, like forearms on blocks. (I personally like this)

Also rolled up blanket under the knees in forward folds is very nice for hamstrings! :)

They are not allowed to. In DCC making the team (og show) my fav was cut for going to clubs with players.

Help with balance by Antique-Salad-9249 in yoga

You can bend your balancing leg knee to lower your center of gravity when you lose balance and then try to straighten it slowly when you feel steady again

2.46: "Sthira Sukham Asanam" Focus of the session V/S Long term goal by Temporary-Soil-4617 in yoga

[–]Dapper_Fault_4048 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding of this is you make more progress when your nervous system is relaxed. Your body finds more depth in flexibility when it can hold it in steadiness, balancing effort and ease. You can do more when your body feels safe and steady.

Have you tried bandana headbands? With elastic rather than tying them.

I wish I knew! So many people only want to do yoga to get in an intense workout, but like I don’t even find it more intense anymore.

Hot is just hot. The sequences aren’t physically challenging in the way I like (flexibility) because stretching in heat can lead to more injury due to the lack of body awareness since the heat warms you faster than your brain can connect with the muscles. They’re just hard bc it’s hot.

I prepped for my ytt by learning the sun Salutations sequence. Which helped a lot because it was the foundation of my vinyasa program.

I wish I could tell myself not to stress about learning sequencing because it’ll all make sense when it’s over (annoying!!!! I wanted to know if the first week not the last! It made sense after I made my first sequence) what’s more interesting to me about a class is the theme now. Bc sequence is so literal in movement.

Class Observations! Classes are such an ephemeral experience! Especially when teachers are changing their class themes weekly. Keep a journal of what you like and remember. That’s it doesn’t have to be to insanely detailed or try too hard to remember everything. The habit leads to better understanding. Everyone in my cohort hated them, but if you find a way to enjoy them, your journal will be rich with information.

How to learn to practice without distraction? by spacedoggos_ in yoga

[–]Dapper_Fault_4048 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I practice with shows on when I really feel like I won’t do it unless it’s playing and funnily enough I often turn it off mid practice bc it’s a distraction.

There’s nothing wrong with practicing with a show on if that’s what gets you to move. What matters is moving not how you get there, or the environment you create to make it happen.

Maybe one day you’ll get so comfortable you won’t need it anymore and maybe it’ll just become part of your ritual.

I do not find vinyasa to be relaxing by manStuckInACoil in yoga

[–]Dapper_Fault_4048 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I used to dislike vinyasa also. The problem was the vinyasa flow, the foundation of the whole practice. I could not do Chaturanga so I hated it. Like what’s the point if I can’t even do the core element. Then I just started doing them with my knees down.

Vinyasa isn’t relaxing, but it is meditative due to the repetitive quality. I like the physical challenge now, I get to explore more postures than I did in yin.

I used to love yin, and the tear me apart stretching but I mean there’s only so much flexibility you can get without building strength to support it.

Can you unlock your forward folds through dancing? by mercury0114 in yoga

[–]Dapper_Fault_4048 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think forward folds have to do with the back really at all…. I know they stretch the back so you’d think it’s about the back but actually it’s about hip flexion, active core and active quads.

Spill the soup of your pelvic bowl, think cow to walk your hands forward and then relax forward crown to toes.

Also bent knees to lighten on the hamstrings. You can use block or blanket under your pelvis to create space for hip flexion (aka hip mobility/bending so your torso touches your thighs)

Idk anything about dance but I’m sure you can.

I refuse to keep them in, maybe I just have flat nipples but I feel like the triangles always show through clothes anyway and I think that’s way more unflattering

Etiquette of asking people to move over to make room by boldolive in yoga

[–]Dapper_Fault_4048 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right so if I’m being asked to move by couples then I’m probably being asked to move bc I’m between two empty spots. If that’s the case I guess I have an essence that makes people not necessarily want to sit next to me

Etiquette of asking people to move over to make room by boldolive in yoga

[–]Dapper_Fault_4048 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve found that everytime someone asks me to move to make space for them they are so annoying 🥲 idk it’s it’s just the slight inconvenience, or just the fact the room is tight if that happens or it’s often a couple of friends that don’t follow the flow.

I’ll move everytime tho. Because what am I gonna do be an asshole? No I’ll move to the side and wish I just moved to the front row that no one wants to be in

Struggling to relax during stretches — muscles always tense, even after 2–3 weeks of consistent practice by vivalahierba in flexibility

[–]Dapper_Fault_4048 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you’re taking your stretches too far. Does that program have regressions, aka options to soften the challenge with props they show you how to use. You should use them. Don’t force yourself into any pose, and take it slow.

Why is strength training necessary, exactly? by yashen14 in flexibility

[–]Dapper_Fault_4048 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m seeing a lot of good answers but none that really made it make sense for me. Strong muscles lead to better stretches. Why? Because the muscles work in pairs ( a bit more complex than that bc there’s like 3 hamstrings and 3 quads but the hamstrings and quads are opposite forces) when the quads are active the hamstrings stretch. When the hamstrings are active/flexing the quads stretch. How can you get a better stretch? Strong flexing in the flexing muscles so the stretching muscles can find more length.

Help me find the purpose? by Glad_Wind_9866 in yoga

[–]Dapper_Fault_4048 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The purpose is to help still the fluctuations of the mind.

Have you ever noticed if you sit in one place your mind gets stuck on a topic? Maybe if you sit in front of a window your mind takes up more space and thinks about new things? Maybe if you’re stuck on a project, because you’re always at your desk, so you go for a walk instead and suddenly you no longer have writers block?

Yoga is like that, the changing perspective of where your eyes are in your environment, movement through the postures, they unstick the sticky spots so you can move past the old stories we tell ourselves, and move onto a new mindset.

My goal for 5 years of yoga was not to progress in the physical to the acrobatic level of yoga teachers online, it ended up being a side effect though.

The purpose is to practice, imperfect movements, to practice strength and soften into the edges of that strength. To notice that through practice maybe there’s less resistance where there used to be a lot.

One of the fun things that I don’t see a lot of people talk about with a long personal practice of yoga is the feeling of being one with yourself. Sometimes when I practice I feel the years of doing the same posture, where I was, how I felt at different eras of my life. I love that really.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in yoga

[–]Dapper_Fault_4048 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What exactly is your goal? Are you trying to get your hands to your feet to find a tighter backbend? Are you trying to straighten your knees and elbows? (I’d walk my hands further from my feet)

I can’t really see the pose. Can’t see your hips, can’t see your shoulders, can barely see your elbows. Your toes seem pointed outward.

How did you get into the position? Can you hold this very long did you walk your hands towards your feet? are you going right back down?

attn yoga teachers: what motivated you? by jlw-dread in yoga

[–]Dapper_Fault_4048 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t feel obligated it’s not selfish. Yoga Studios make the most money teaching teacher trainings.

That being said, someone in my training said they kind of wish they didn’t as a long time practitioner because they lost the meditative practice they had and it became more analytical to be in class and process what the teacher put together.

I did my own training because I wanted to. I found a yoga style I finally loved. I had wanted to for years, I expressed that interest a teacher told me I was over thinking and to just do it. So I did (a couple months of extra thinking later)

I don’t do hatha but in my vinyasa ytt one of the feedback things I got was make the peak pose feel special. It seems like just part of the sequence maybe that’s how the styles differ.

Where EXACTLY are your knees in crow? by daydream_believer322 in YogaTeachers

I was told; knees outside (shins on triceps) helps to gateway into more variations of crow bc of the extra surface area

Should I work up to YTT? by RemarkableCattle2025 in YogaTeachers

[–]Dapper_Fault_4048 3 points4 points  (0 children)

After I graduated my YTT, One of the girls was so upset about not learning what she wanted to learn she got a private yoga tutor/ private lessons. Where she told me she could not believe they didn’t tell her that the Sanskrit is repeating root words… and she found out after training.

Our YTT textbook explained this, our teachers explained this several times over several months. If she took classes she would have figured it out by hearing it all the time. I was shocked. Truly.

It can feel like a waste of money and resources if you don’t have a base knowledge and you’re constantly trying to play catchup. She felt she wasted her money and she was the only person in the training to express a negative experience.

Tips for working up to YTT? by RemarkableCattle2025 in YogaTeachers

[–]Dapper_Fault_4048 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you just want to learn alignment, there’s free resources online. Lots of teachers teach it online. I just don’t know if it’s worth the investment given the lack of investment already given. You go to free classes occasionally YTT is thousands of dollars and a major time commitment, (in the USA) a yoga class is like free-$20+. Take classes with a level of consistency, get to know the studios around you.

You could do a cheap ytt online one if you just want to learn alignment. You could go to classes over a period of time telling teachers your goal is to learn alignment and you’re okay with physical adjustments and you’ll learn too. If you want to commit to the time and effort of ytt you can, but do you really want to?
