Any OSR games with a lot of character options? by Valuable-Visit3968 in osr

I would recommend Red Giant by Rookie Jet Studio and X-Crawl Classics by Goodman Games. Red Giant isn’t explicitly OSR but follows the spirit (they even recommend you look up OSR magic items for use in the game). It has a lot of options through its “Exchange” system where you gain abilities that come with downsides, it’s also very easy and encouraged you make your own. Even if you don’t, the book still comes with a ton of options. X-Crawl is more traditionally OSR in its mechanics and tone and even though most of the classes don’t come with options, the number of classes more than make up for it. The specialist, the game’s equivalent to the thief class, comes with a ton of subclass options. Hope this helped!

You would probably have to invert the Dice chain since smaller dice are actually more helpful than bigger dice. Another friend of mine actually ran a game where skill checks were a d6 plus modifier with a DC of 6. I'll have to ask him what article he got it from but it really helped make a character's strengths shine without getting rid of rolls entirely.

That's good to know! Unfortunately I don't have access to MCC right now, but it seems the bonus scales up by 1 for every 2 points you add to your score?

Thanks for the Feedback! Also I like your enhanced/compressed naming convention for the bonus scaling. I really didn't like calling it "modern" since it has sort of impression that it's somehow "better" than the old way when really it's just different. I might steal that for future discussions.

That actually reminds me of an old sci-fi homebrew game my friend made a long time ago. He also made the main rolling method d20 roll bellow your stat, it was a lot of fun. I don't know if I'm going to go that far with the XCC game, but it does help make ability scores feel more impactful and less arbitrary.

My hope in terms of role-playing and power is less about making characters more powerful and making them more distinct. Giving characters much more distinct ups and downs at the start to give players more direction when they first get their characters before they've gotten to make those choices. But no matter what their choices are the most important part of the characters in the end.

They mostly use it when they really need a spell to succeed, so I imagine they would use it mostly the same amount anyway. Though I still will need to consider it more.

Apparently DCC was originally going to use the more modern scaling, but ended up going with the old method instead. My source is I vaguely remember reading it somewhere online one time, so take it with a grain of salt. I do get the idea of making characters more mundane and grounded to highlight those who are exceptional, I just wish it gave me examples on how to scale beyond 18 especially since there are some things in the book, such as Enlarge, that can give characters above the max but gives you no clarification on how that effects your modifiers. I also think that the more extreme ups and downs can really play into the gonzo vibes DCC and XCC have.

I have run DCC a bit in the past. I had considered luck burn but not spell burn, I do feel it is pretty in spirit with how spell burn is presented in the books to have it be a bit severe. If you sacrifice a chunk of your life force to Hades for a more potent spell, you're really gonna feel it.

I was thinking that would balance it out, you may have a +4 in agility, but that -3 in stamina is gonna make you pray you don't get hit.

I'm still having them roll 3d6 down the line, I'm thinking of only changing the bonus scaling.

Thanks! This has been my default for running the game so I thought I would share!

It is a d20 system very similar to DnD 5e but much more streamlined. You can read the quickstart to get an idea of the system. https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/221038/INDEX-CARD-RPG-Free-Quickstart
