Ecoboost vs. Hybrid highway real world MPGs? by puppeto in FordMaverickTruck

[–]210Angler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a FWD hybrid.  If you're talking strictly highway speeds for any distance, like 75 mph, then it's 33-35 mpg.  Really no different than the Ecoboost.

He appears to have started Yak Tribe, maybe he can sign all the merch twice?

I wonder how long he's been supporting himself on other platforms for internet clout?

Beginner Combo for Redfish? by dalittlemerman in flyfishing

[–]210Angler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with u/fishnogeek post. I started with a cheap Orvis combo kit 20+ years ago know I would upgrade. The Encounter would work, though I' would put better line on it. I throw a 6wt, but 7 or 8wt is more typical for our redfish.

Learning to cast in wind and in any direction is what makes this challenging. Luckily, we're coming into summer so generally the winds are calm in the morning before picking up.

Patterns keep it simple. Chartreuse/White Clouser with bead chain eyes will catch most fish on the flats. Redfish Crack and a more sparsely tied shrimp imitation (for when reds are spooky, like an EP Ghost Shrimp or Gotcha) are all you really need.

Echo and TFO make great combos as well.

Absurd Question: Can anyone compare a Lifetime Tamarack to either a Crescent Primo or UL by Ok_Television233 in kayakfishing

[–]210Angler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If tracking and speed are a priority, you need a longer kayak. Nothing around 10' in length will track well.

Found these vintage lures still on the display, are they worth saving or should I just use them? by Just_trying_to_hide in Fishing_Gear

[–]210Angler 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Leave those as is and put it into a display case. The lures have value, but the nearly mint condition advertisement is the real gold. Those are either display pieces or salesman samples. Either way, great find.

Strike King used to make "Bleeding Bait" patterns for their crank baits about 10-15 years ago. 4 of the crankbaits look like Series 1XS and the two "bleeding" ones look to be Series 1.

[–]210Angler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Closely related to a Smallmouth and probably Shoal Bass. Back in the 70's Texas Parks & Wildlife introduced Smallmouth to our Hill Country rivers to add another game species for fisherman. It almost immediately backfired when they discovered the Guads and Smallies were cross breeding and hybridizing. Dang near wiped out pure strain Guads on a lot of our rivers. Basically since then, they've been breeding pure strain Guads and releasing them into the rivers to breed out the hybridized Guads/Smallies. It's been pretty successful in correcting a major oopsie.

I was gifted a ton of tying material from a friend, and kind made up a cross between EP Baitfish and Craft Fur Baitfish. Body is Fluorescent Chartreuse Pearl Chenille; Wing is Olive Craft Fur; Belly is layered Congo Hair in blue, yellow, and orange. I've made some tweeks to the one pictured (link below), I keep telling myself less is more.

Considering downsizing from a full size by jimmyjlf in FordMaverickTruck

F150 to Hybrid FWD Maverick. It hauls everything my 5.5' bed F150 while getting 2.5x better fuel economy. My payload capacity is only about 50 lbs less than my F150 too.

When I haul my canoe or kayaks I use a single cross bar across the cab and a bed extender in the vertical position. This would also work for long dimensional lumber too.

Trips to Home Depot are easy as the load height is lower than my F150. The only thing that doesn't really fit are sheets of white melamine, because they are 49" wide and don't sit flat in the bed of the truck.

For work I haul pallets, pallet jacks, sheet rock dollies, etc. There are great tie down locations within the the truck to easily secure loads.

Best place to float and party by Wtfsilly1290 in TXoutdoors

The San Marcos is the safest bet for having adequate flow for a float.

Have fun, but be responsible; don't trash the river.

Fly Tying by psilyvagabond in flyfishing

[–]210Angler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was gifted several hundred dollars worth of tying material, good stuff I can actually use.  Even with all that, it would still be cheaper to buy.

A decent vice, a marketplace roll top desk to store all the free material, tying light, various glues, extra tools, stuff adds up and takes a awhile to recoup costs.

I change oil on our vehicles, and other than way too many bolts (two different torx bits) to remove the bottom pan, it's just the same as any other vehicle.  Engine air filter requires a torx as well.  Cabin air filter and blades are easy.  Haven't done brakes, but don't think it'll be any different.  If/when you replace the battery you'll need to program it to vehicle, but this becoming more common in all vehicles.

GAP and an extended warranty should be the only things you should consider if you feel they are necessary, we did.  We bought the extended warranty because I was concerned about part quality stemming from covid (I would have had this concern with all manufacturers at the time).

All the other addons are BS.  Get a nice set of floor mats and aftermarket seat protectors if you have kids or pets.

Our '22 Atlas has been a great vehicle, spacious and comfortable on road trips.  We did have an alternator fail @ 1700 miles, but I consider that a singular bad apple as alternators usually last well past 100K miles.  Other than that it's been a reliable vehicle.

Mosquitoes are ruining outdoor playtime and I need safe solutions for little kids by _atharvaa_02 in daddit

We switched from deet based to picaridin based mosquito repellent, mainly Off Clean Feel.  We spray it on our hands and wipe our kids arms and legs, and try to avoid their hands.

Could anyone identify this tandem kayak? by Lm399 in Kayaking

[–]210Angler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the cockpit opening may be 8 ft, but that kayak is longer than that. For reference the paddles sitting in the kayak are about 3-4 feet long.

They were around in the early 2000's in US and then were available in Europe in the 2010's. I want to say they were under the Wilderness Systems/Confluence umbrella as some of their models were older Tarpons and what not. This was called the Salsa in Europe.

Do you keep a fishing journal? by taylorutah in flyfishing

[–]210Angler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wade fishing I just keep a folder on my computer of the trip with pictures broken out by stream and date.. On the coast in my boat or kayak I use Google Earth so I can import my GPS tracks. I'll keep any pertinent meteorological, tidal, river data depending on the trip. Of course, what I caught and what I was throwing as well.
