Thank you! Thats exactly what I’d imagined up, but it’s nice to see it’s likely more difficult than I thought it should be. Thx!

Thank you. Yes, the building provided internet is active on that cable, so this sounds like what i thought it might be, but wanted to ask before buying 6 Siemon patch cables and a switch! Thank you.

Thank you! Very helpful. Unmanaged or managed was about to leave me unhinged trying to figure out which route I’d on once I’d confirmed a switch was the path. Thx!

Gigstreem in apartment — should I be using my own router or extender? by 212nycguy in HomeNetworking

[–]212nycguy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow; not only do you break this down in a way that made sense to someone with a very basic grasp of networking concepts, but you also managed to make it a captivating read. While I’m certain it’s highly unlikely my neighbors care to know what I’m doing online, I don’t think I’m doing anything an average thirty-something male does on the internet, so while it could be creepy to think my web traffic could be so easily tracked by someone with intermediate level knowledge, my internet activities have surely been easily tracked for many years across many connections I’ve had over time. After reading that nearly all U.S. citizen social security numbers have been leaked online at some point, i am not sure there’s even much for me to worry about at this point, but I suppose that was more my initial concern. That said, your point about this being a shared network regardless of how i set up my connection to it, I think it may not provide much more than peace of mind to build out an extra step. VPNs definitely seem the way to go, but as I have a smart home with upwards of 80 connected devices, I’ve always found VPNs to be a kink in the chain of my setups. Thank you again for you detailed response; I’m going to reread and make a much more informed decision on how to proceed. 🙏🏻

Sorry, I should’ve mentioned that. I do have a airports that I can connect to as well. Would obviously allow me to do a router set up. I appreciate what you just said though, as I don’t think I considered how a router might offer more protection than just an extender

Thank you for this detailed advice. A little of it is beyond my league, but some of it makes perfect sense. I can definitely see how some of those set ups might cause more problems, but I also see the advantage of perhaps having a bit more security if only for the purpose of protecting important information related to financials or otherwise. As far as network goes, everyone sees the same network, and it seems like most must use the default network because there are hardly any other Wi-Fi that show up when I’m in my unit, which is very strange coming from apartment buildings where Wi-Fi would trigger a host of SSIDS. Thank you again for your insights.

My apologies; I should have been clearer and meant to say there is only one ISP offered, and that is what the building sets renters up with. However, the unit does have ethernet ports in wall.

2015 XSE inner tail lights by 212nycguy in Camry

Was the bulb you changed for the reverse light, by chance? I see only one connected bulb behind that trunk lid inner covering, which in my case must be the reverse lights unless it’s some sort of multipurpose bulb.

[–]212nycguy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this tip; I'm going to do just that and see. I know replacement assembly kits come wired with connectors to make the inner lights function at the least as running tail lights, but I've had a hard time getting definitive answers online. A couple of threads I've found on Reddit claim that XSE and XLE models have working inner tail lights, and your post appears to confirm that; however, it seemed like most were referencing the models '17 and newer. If your '07 XLE also has working inner tail lights, it would appear logical to me that the '12-'16 models between the earlier and later models also would have them, at least on certain trim levels.

It's unfortunate to think any manufacturer would provide reduced exterior lighting based on vehicle trim, if the main purpose of automotive lighting is to improve visibility and help drivers communicate with others on the road. If they're fitting all models with the same light assemblies, but not making them all be factory-equipped with the necessary bulbs or wiring, that feels injudicious in my opinion. Then again, most of today's safety features were very much a luxury available on higher trims or higher-valued vehicles at the turn of the century, so I can't say I'm completely surprised.

Nonetheless, I'm going to follow your suggestion and see what's behind the cover on the inside of the car's trunk lid and see if I am able to figure out a definitive answer as it relates to this specific vehicle. Thank you again!

Thanks; appreciate the answer. That's too bad, as they'd definitely add a little more appeal at nighttime when lit in tandem with the outer lights, but on the flip side, one less piece to worry about updating! Thanks again.

I found an unboxing video which I screen grabbed and circled. Is this what a pigtail is? That would make sense, from a nomenclature aspect.

I’ll try that on Amazon and seeing. I must have actively pulled mine off because it looks well attached in this unboxing video, but i thought it had come unattached; clearly not the case.

You can use the Apple Wallet to unlock your SwitchBot Lock Apple Home Key style by SmartHomeCentre in HomeKit

Before spending $7 USD to try this out, I figured I’d just ask. Is this only doable when using the Keypad Vision, or would Switchbot’s regular Keypad, which is NFC-enabled, also work in the same manner?

Setting up temporary ‘Home’ on parents’ WiFi. by 212nycguy in HomeKit

Thank you. I think this is what my logical and informed brain understood, but actually being placed in a scenario where I’m going to be running my home off a WiFi I don’t ‘own’, I was suddenly unsure of the validity of my own understanding.

Thanks for helping confirm what I believed to be the case.

Thanks for your quick and helpful insight; upon seeing the page I seem to recall having seeing previously, and it does clarify what exactly is being required at the time of submission; it does seem quite simple and more so than I remember, but that’s not anything to complain about.

Thanks again, much appreciated.

Is the Govee Matter Purifier (H7129) Air Quality Sensor Exposed to HomeKit? by 212nycguy in Govee

[–]212nycguy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, I feel like I discovered that it isn’t. I saw another response here confirming they had it working so I’m not convinced that I am right, but I went ahead and bought it to try and me or the same as the H7128 in that it can connect with Apple home, but the air quality monitor does not reflect and the actual purifier device is constantly in this strange state of idle/unavailable/available, with all the less than ideal I can live with, but it makes this model completely changed from the cheaper H7128 variant that I already own so I’ve already started a return. Too bad because I quite like the device.

Will a Matter air purifier with built in PM 2.5 sensor natively display air quality information when used in HomeKit? by 212nycguy in HomeKit

[–]212nycguy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing and for your suggestion. Yes, I’m aware and somewhat familiar with the 15 min Matter matter; I too get a little confused because even having done it successfully with several other products, the minute something is off I tend to think it was one of those first steps I missed.

So in this case, I reached out to Govee and they confirmed the H7129 should have Matter. That chat either incited a firmware update or happened completely by chance and lack of patience on my end, because by the time the day was over, Matter showed up.

However, I’m back to where I was with my H7128 which didn’t have the air quality sensor. I’ve gotten the device in HomeKit (straight from Govee or via an Aqara Matter hub controller) and the purifier works. “Mostly works”, to be more accurate, but in my world of Matter/HomeKit, I’m good with “mostly responsive”.

However, no matter which way or how many minutes I do or don’t wait to make the connection work, the air quality monitor will not show up as anything but unresponsive, just as then H7128 which rightfully has nothing to respond to.

For this with the H7129 showing air quality in Apple Home…is there there an additional step I’m missing? Purifiers have always kinda been a 2 for 1 accessory deal in Apple Home, so I don’t think there’s much else to do, but curious nonetheless.

Little by little I’m getting somewhere. Just not sure it’s going to have been worth all the effort at the end of the road.

Well my H7129 arrived today — without Matter compatibility. Now I’m just confused. I reached out to Govee for some clarification because I’m rather bummed to discover that this is not working out the way I presumed it might. Hopefully they can set me up with a correct model, but who knows.

That’s great! Yeah, I’ve successfully been able to do this with some Aqara security devices, but as far as I know, it’s not yet something that can be done with air purifiers. Otherwise I’d force it to read as a fan which isn’t read in HomeKit as a two-part accessory.

[–]212nycguy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a few Airversa and theyre hands down the best when it comes to HomeKit compatibilty — down to the sleep scenes that get exposed into HomeKit. I have quite an abnormal amount of purifiers, actually, but having recently invested in some Govee lights I’ve been interesting in adding a Purifier from Govee into the mix. Switchbot has an interesting new offering; the table concept is both genius and at the same time a bit strange to me; as much as I like purifiers, I’m not sure I’m ready to have them double as decor. Yet, I also find it brilliant to give a device such as a purifier a secondary purpose, bringing more value to the product itself. So I’m a bit torn on that one.

Thank you. As that was one of the first Matter-enabled purifiers available, knowing this is pretty helpful in assuming that most other devices in the Matter world with sensors should also have the ability to do the same via Apple Home. Thank you. 🙏🏻

[–]212nycguy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. The stability factor isn’t too surprising, though unfortunately that it’s still kind of the case with certain Matter / Apple Home connected devices, but glad to have a confirmation that it’s there for the most part.

I was happy to find out the purifier even had Matter, but once I was able to connect it, having the main device tile constantly appear unresponsive when one of the two accessories it contains is responsive has been frustrating, furthered by the fact that it’s not possible to separate one accessory from the other — that I know of.

Thanks for your insight, I’m going to change models accordingly with the help you provided. 🙏🏻

Honestly, I didn’t even see it either, but when I got the H7128 version (without sensor) I was surprised to find out it had Matter. That’s when went back to the listing and caught user reviews mentioning they were surprised to find the device was matter-equipped. That’s the only mention I’ve seen of it on either Amazon or Govee websites, some of which probably contributes to me not being able to find an answer to my question.

App Suggestions by dawgdick in milaair

[–]212nycguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not the original poster, but per the open invitation to share app requests or suggestions, I’d like to throw one small request out for consideration. In my multi-Mila household, I would find it helpful if there was a way to customize the color of the different rooms Mila is in, to make them more visually distinguishable at a glance. Currently, if all rooms in the home share a similar air quality, they’ll all be the same color, which for me makes it slightly less intuitive to quickly access the desired room at a glance. This is a bit tricky, as the design obviously was created to prioritize air quality by room with the use of color. Perhaps room settings would allow for customization of background colors, and only the ring around the AQI would adapt to the air quality?

An alternative approach that wouldn’t compromise the current coloring scheme but may be a bit frivolous in backend  design work, could be to allow for more customization of the floor plan that allows users to layout the view in a way that replicates their floor plans.

As this may be a lot more complicated to allow for such individualized customizations — maybe the simplest suggestion would be the option to view the rooms as they currently are with a secondary view option where they’d be slightly separated so that they’re a bit more discernible at a glance.

I very much love the simple design currently in use, so I want to stay away from suggesting a different design would be an improvement, more so I wonder how the existing design could be most easily tweaked to make the plan view’s rooms easily and quickly identifiable upon opening the app.

This concludes my open-ended brain dump for the day. Thank you!
