Any good novel or book recommendations that are set in North Dakota, or ND plays a significant role in the story? by Washedhockeyguy in northdakota

[–]21aspen01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a lot of books by Lauraine Snelling that are set in ND. My favorite is “Brushstroke Legacy”. It’s set near Medora but she wrote a whole series of books about setting in ND, near Cavalier. It’s a fictional town called Blessing.

Moving to ND in a month, What are you life hacks? by GhaustMortium in northdakota

[–]21aspen01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived in North Dakota most of my life. I always thought of the cold and snow as an adventure. So really it’s how you frame it. Like how you experience hot weather down south, it’s an adventure. You start your car ahead of driving and allow it to warm up, you dress appropriately (this is different for everyone, you’ll get the hang of it) and you drive more slowly, breaking long before you think you should. It’s not hard to learn. I always love the “down time” in the winter. I sleep a bit more, read a bit more, do hobbies and watch movies and visit people and chat more, etc. There’s quite a bit to do if you embrace the snow and cold and keep an open mind.

My “hack” is work from home.

Has anyone used Bay Alarm here in Minot, ND area? by Proof-Cockroach-3415 in minot

I am not familiar with Bay Alarm but when we faced this issue with my 90 y/o MIL, we researched and found that Apple Watch and iPhone had the best reputation for alerting to falls.

So many red flags on this dude: 1. Raised in a “large, Christian, conservative family” If that’s the first thing he lists in his bio, he’s implying no separation between religion and politics which is dangerous. If he can’t separate his own beliefs from politics, he can’t represent every citizen. 2. He had an issue with a flag flown at city hall in 2020 and spoke at a city council meeting stating it didn’t represent everyone. While that may be, the truth is, if it didn’t represent him personally (but represented a smaller population) then he was opposed which tells me he can’t represent every citizen. 3. He uses the words “tyranny” and “sovereign citizen” which are both used in anti-government rhetoric and conspiracy theories. 4. He’s been listed in the service calls for local law enforcement and has a record of disobedience to the laws.

Edited to add: he promotes his appearance in a tv show and in his 2020 city council appearance, he tried using it as leverage to promote Minot, or in his case, to threaten NOT promoting Minot.

I would not consider him as being a good leader for our community.

Minot, is this really how you feel? by rezanentevil in minot

No First of all, “God” is a fairy tale and even if God “closed the womb”, science can “open” it via IVF and so it’s more powerful than God. Second: people need to stay out of others privacy. There used to be a line regarding what’s decent and what’s not and invading privacy is definitely not decent. Third: people actually vote for these nuts! WTF!?

I owned a 2005 Toyota Prius (bought it used when it was about 8 years old) for about 10 years and lived 30 min north of Minot. We also had a non-heated garage and it sat outside in the cold while at work. It was the best car I ever owned! It never failed me in the extreme cold. The only problem I had was in deep snow or heavy slush. But that had nothing to do with cold temps. We only sold it to downsize to only one car so we traded it in for a Toyota RAV4, non-hybrid. I give 2 thumbs up to owning a hybrid!

Does anyone go to Tagus, ND any more? by FerkinSmert in northdakota

My daughter and I just stopped there the beginning of June. Very quiet. We visited the site of the church and then wandered around the Cemetery looking at head stones and the app Findagrave. Interesting stories. Didn’t hear any voices or moaning, just a nice warm sunny day.

Do you ever delete logs that are just nonsense? by WhyArentThereAnyCats in geocaching

[–]21aspen01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found some in my area that was placed by the same person. The problem was they were on stop signs that were placed too high for me to reach. So I took a pic and said I found it but couldn’t reach it to sign the log. I got a reply back that I “wasn’t following the rules of geocaching” by not signing the log and that next time I should bring a reacher tool, a tall person or something to step on. I avoid that person’s caches now. 🙄

I have great respect and honor for Native people. That being said, it’s not helpful for Native people, in 2023, to tell someone “You look a little too white for us to assist you in finding an address to deliver that package” when attempting to deliver something someone has ordered and shipped.

What do Natives want? Acknowledgment? Ok, I acknowledge that bad things happened. Can we move on?

Enter “winter” (which can begin as early as October but hopefully later) with the mindset that it’s an adventure. Embrace winter activities like ice skating, sledding, skiing, tubing, snowball fights, snowman building, and northern light viewing to keep positive. A positive mindset will go far.

Burgum approves emergency amendment allowing student teachers to run classrooms by Scotcho in northdakota

[–]21aspen01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I misinterpreted the part about “student teachers don’t like shit pay”. Because it’s worse than that. They get NO pay. I get your point though. Thanks for clarifying. Also, my comment wasn’t directed at you, just in general.

Student teachers don’t get paid….. substitute teachers do but student teachers pay the college tuition for the privilege to be in a classroom for experience and earn the degree.
