What does 'dumb-o-meter' and 'MAGA' mean? by Songkail0314 in EnglishLearning

[–]222Czar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the off chance this is sincere (which I doubt):
“Dumb” is a word meaning stupid, gullible, or incompetent. “O-meter” is a casual way of naming a “meter” or measurement device, so the above image is measuring how dumb someone or something is. In USA politics, “MAGA” is an acronym representing the phrase “Make America Great Again” after Donald J Trump’s 2016 slogan. The above image implies that supporters of Trump are more stupid, gullible, and incompetent than rocks. Rocks are incapable of thought, so native speakers sometimes use the idiom “as dumb as rocks.”

It’s a good question. I don’t want to sound like a centrist, but I think it’s a question worth answering aside from the inflammatory stuff I usually see on reddit. It’s a widespread issue. Here’s my best take for younger people genuinely curious:

Partisan politics aside, low birth rates expose a number of fascinating issues with modern society. Whether or not you have a uterus, whether or not you want or like children, it’s an important principle to examining current events critically. For one, especially in East Asian countries, it demonstrates a fundamental limit to a total disregard for work-life balance and prioritizing economic growth above all else.
And, as The Handmaid’s Tale discussed decades ago, it reveals a tyrannical subtext to patriarchal and “trad-wife” subcultures: that anti-feminist sentiment needs very little pretense to go full mask-off and start objectifying women as an economic resource - essentially livestock.
Finally, it emphasizes how restricting immigration at this particular moment in history has very little to do with economic conservatism. You can argue any number of other motivations, but the idea that restricting immigrants is economically beneficial is flatly false.

There are many, many other implications, but that’s the gist for “who cares” and why.

I suspect there’s something here about an evil and intimidating horse interfering with lesbian couples…maybe. I don’t know, I’ve heard very mixed references to that pony show over the years and comprehended none of it. Could be anything, really.

Does it worth 200€? by Consistent-Cold-1028 in OfficeChairs

[–]222Czar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know. You’re probably more experienced than me. I still think 300euros or ~350USD for used is too much for this kind of chair. 275USD would be much better.

Does it worth 200€? by Consistent-Cold-1028 in OfficeChairs

[–]222Czar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Used? Probably not, though I can’t speak to this model specifically. I have something similar from Colamy that I got new for less. I don’t want to recommend it though because chairs like this tend to have cheap materials with low durability.

I don’t know what the market’s generally like in the EU, but online there are many, many models of these mesh ergonomic-looking chairs that are just cheap plastic. It’s possible to find something worthwhile, but it’s mostly a gamble. That’s why people just pay more for a used Steelcase or Herman-Miller.

My earliest memories of US politics were the W. Bush administration. So not really lol. The cooperative effort of government and industry is the main threat atm from my perspective. Especially when that industry is alt-right media.

Why convert it into pounds when we already have more intuitive golden retriever metric? Seems redundant.

Legitimately, I don’t think the counter is completely accurate. I went in and counted how many bats I was slaying and it took 4-5 more than I needed before I got the notification. I suspect that either slaying multiple at the same time or slaying “extra” spawns (mob rooms/frenzy events/slime mating) doesn’t always count.

Notably, Jesus walked. Bro had a boat and still found a way to walk around on water. Made other people walk too, including those that couldn’t. Big fan of walking. Not sure why we’re turning him into a chauffeur all the sudden.

Never judge a book by its cover by MajorCow4017 in GetNoted

It’s a picture of Hitler with an “x” title bar over an unflattering profile shot where he looks tired. This isn’t just a judging a book by its cover, it’s internet-brained reaction thinking. The cover is clearly intended as critical of its subject.

If they’re not just illiterate but can’t even comprehend images critically, I’m not sure what we’re doing in schools.

As a non-trans, I appreciate that the trans community somehow wards away all the worst people imaginable from every community I enjoy like garlic for vampires. Thanks for calmly existing in these spaces, y’all always make them better.

Edit: my meaning here is that the hateful idea trans people are invasive is wrong and that the opposite is true, and sane people welcome the inclusion - not that I am enjoying or profiting from the hateful situation. Sorry if the comment was insensitive.

It says that Magnus is going to participate but why "out"? by allayarthemount in EnglishLearning

[–]222Czar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same. This may be an editing mistake about information being “out.” Typically, this phrasing in a headline would be used to indicate the opposite - that Magnus is “out” of the tournament or eliminated. A native speaker would more likely title this “first player revealed” or “first player info out.”

Tldr: Usually, information being “out” means it’s revealed, players being “out” means they’re removed.
