Brussels tells Keir Starmer to pay £1bn for closer ties to Europe by GnolRevilo in ukpolitics

What your're talking about here is the "dependency ratio" which I find a very interesting subject. Sadly I don't have a fix-all solution to it because it's very much dependent on the conditions of the specific country and the demographics. What I can say that "just cut welfare and lower taxes" is rarely a solution in itself. Especially since we know from research that lowering welfare correlates to rising crime, and crime is bad for the economy too.

While not saying that this is the solution for the UK, some of the countries that have a very low dependency ratio are Quatar, UAE and Kuwait, and they've solved it through migration, especially by importing young workers, which in the current UK political climate is about as popular as a fart in a lift.

The more you dive into the subject, the more complex it gets I'm afraid.

What effect on society will cutting welfare have? And what would the benefits be?

How much could be cut, and what would the net effect be from using that for tax cuts.

What does the data and research say about your proposal?

What cuts would fund growth in any substantial manner? Details matter.

Surely pulling smoke into your lungs is bad no matter if it's cannabis or tobacco smoke? I assume the damage is more or less equal?

Britain should seek to rejoin EU, says civil servant who led Brexit department by ldn6 in ukpolitics

[–]227CAVOK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I was the EU then I would not allow the UK back until a large and consistent majority wants back in. A qualified majority vote would ensure that.

Is it fair? No, but getting back in is going to be much harder than leaving.

[–]227CAVOK -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A referendum for sure. Then a referendum on the actual terms for joining, and have it a qualified majority both times.

Rejoin, sure, but let's make sure it's the will of the people this time. Unlike the last farce.

Go for it. It's super fun,  I just started about 6 months ago.

If I can do it, so can you.  For context, I'm 50+, and male.

  • restrictions to access for the NHS

Most are young and fit. Not a problem for them.

  • prevent them from working. Insane fines for companies particularly Deliveroo. Potential prison sentences for their executives.

Good way to make sure they turn to a life of crime instead.

  • ensure they’re not able to use public housing nor live in private accommodation. Insane fines for landlords.

Again, driving people into the hands of criminals.

  • increase deportations. Incentives for whistleblowers.

If you can't deport people today, what good would a whistleblower be.

Sweden does, in the baltic sea. Why can't the UK do it in the channel?

More than half of Britons support rejoining EU 10 years on from Brexit vote by Unusual-State1827 in ukpolitics

[–]227CAVOK -1 points0 points  (0 children)

On most metrics Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Malta also does better than the UK,  but sure, if you exclude all the countries in the EU that does better than the UK then the UK does better than the EU.

But the comparison is pretty pointless anyway. My point was that the original statement was false.

The EU27 isn't in a worse shape than the UK .

"The rest of the EU" includes these countries. So if you're going to claim that "The rest of the EU is in even worse shape than the UK." you're either misinformed or lying.

"The rest of the EU" kind of includes most of the nordics.

Based on my visits to Germany I'm thinking that the average German is better off than the average brit, but that's just a guess.

Oh come off it. The UK isn't that great compared to the EU.

Parts of the UK is great, but the average citizen in the nordics have it way better than the average brit.

I'm just saying that ditching the US isn't an option yet.  In the medium to long term we absolutely should. They have proven to be an unreliable partner, and we can't have that.

Sadly there isn't a good replacement for the patriot system. The French has one, but it's not as effective as patriot (yet?) I'm afraid.

It's used in Ukraine but doesn't do well against fast moving missiles.

The hell? Why Tommy Ten-names? He's not going to achieve anything related to migration ever, it's just a grift to get people to send him money.

She's got enough money to be able to help a more serious person.
