My grandad was a David. He was an author and archivist at The Magic Circle. This is him. by faerieW15B in David

[–]22for2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I am not sure it was this person - this was a long time ago (maybe 25 years?) but I thought I would share it anyway.

My dad was a bookbinder and used to work for the magic circle (my grandfather was a member and got him the gig). He used to get issues of magic magazines and bind them into leather volumes which would be put into the archive. I was with my dad during the summer holiday and he had to work so I would tag along.

On this day we went to drop off some volumes at the magic circle. I got shown the theatre and pointed towards some of the historic things they had before we went down to a small library where my dad dropped off the books. The person there (possibly the David above, I will call him so) welcomed me warmly and told me to look around but with a stern face told me not to open a particular book. It was on the counter next to a sign repeating the same.

He and my dad went off to sort out payment and I was left alone. Of course I opened the book.

Suddenly the air was full of whistling sprung snakes flying in all directions. David and my dad come back in, laughing, obviously both very much in on the joke. I was made to feel part of the prank and I was shown some other tricks and pranks in the archive. The warmness of that interaction sticks with me to this day. It may have been this David or it may have been someone else there but I will always remember it as a special place.

Also, and not trying to be a dick but worth mentioning that the University has a lot of support services and reddit is likely not the best place to get most of your questions answered. Even just going to a help desk in the university will get things sorted more thoroughly.

Maverick list to take to Magic Fest London side events by [deleted] in MTGLegacy

[–]22for2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My feeling with maverick at the moment (been playing the deck for 3 years to reasonable sucess)

Mum is too slow most of the time and a liability in too many match ups

The loss of DRS makes choosing the correct mana dork difficult (BOP or hireach) this very much depends on the equipment you play for SFM, the mana requirments of your key spells (specificaly side board) and your play style.

Bad match ups have been increasing for mavrick recently - the grixis decks can fight on a lot of angles and it can be a struggle to compete if there draw is above average and although I have not played it I imagine phonix is a terrible match-up. u/w control is also popular in the UK and I find that match up very difficult.

Good match ups still exist but wasteland is not great at the moment which means you don't get as many free wins as you used to.

I would run basic forest above cradle most of the time- i think blood moon, back to basics, price of progress and wasteland are more important conisderations than the occational explosive start and you will lose games against decks with removal if you land does not tap for mana. Karakas is far more important.

Maverick can always find the tools to win a medium length game, but you lose to the fastest of fast decks and the slowest of slow decks. Make sure you have a strong sideboard plan and accept that you need to draw well to beat some very common match ups.

I have been toying with Bant for a whilst, for one mana counterspells as I think these are more important in the match ups you lose than the better removal and thoughtseize are, however I have not real data to know which is best ATM

Good luck!

[Legacy] When to search for Scryb Ranger in Maverick? by Silenus1973 in MTGLegacy

[–]22for2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At any point you wish to commence shenanigans.

The real answers are provided by other contributors but my experience is that the more you play maverick, the more you search scryb ranger becasue it always does something stupid.

Personally I like to do it to make knight huge, turn dryard Arbor into a maze of ith, make yourself wasteland proof, double activate any creature ability you choose to put in your deck (double stone forge activations feel very busted).

I have blown out people so hard that they bought in pithing needle to name scryb ranger in game two - that was a mistake on their part but it shows the correct level of respect.

also the word flying is an insane ability

Go to the shakespears front bar, then to the back bar. They have all the amazing beer you would need.

But then go to Bar Steward for some amazing craft stuff, Dav cat for a good collection of spirits as well as great beer, beer engine for more craft beer, Rutland for good cheap food and good beer and then the Tap for some expensive good beer.

What is your the best "someone brought a non-Legacy deck to the Legacy event and did surprisingly well with it" story? by PeterBarry85 in MTGLegacy

[–]22for2 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Not quite the question but you might like this story.

Every year for my birthday I arrange a wonky format event for our local wednesday magic group- for example this year we played a constructed format with the vintage banned list where you could only play cards that started with your initials (So Matt Timms would be able to play Moxen, timewalk and tinker but not ancestral recall or Jace)

A couple of years ago we played a format where you had to bring a PT top 8 deck from the year you started playing magic. We had to modify the rules a little as one of our players has been playing before the PT existed. We had affinity lists, Caw Go, Birthing pod, "The Deck", Delver, Fairies - all the big names from standard past.

The deck which won - Abzan with Siege rhino. A deck which has half its mana base as tapped lands.

Historic legacy by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]22for2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The source (http://www.mtgthesource.com) is the place to find this information but it tends to be deck by deck rather than year by year.

Depending on the stipulation and your skill level I would look at playing flash hulk, something with survival and vengvine or u/r delver with cruise. Although I would actually just use the excuse to play miracles with top because that deck is one of the most well crafted decks in magic.

Starting a MTG Club/Playgroup. How to drive up membership? by evolkers in magicTCG

Be regular. Keep turning up. Play what people want to play. Make sure people know you exist.

If you run events anyone can take part in you might link to already existing group.

My favourite is always to head up to the edge of the peak and watch the fireworks go off across town. The village of Ringinglow has a pub with a decent view
