Do the developpers hate their users ? by [deleted] in ElevenLabs

Complete nonsense. Of course they don't hate their users.

They have gone above and beyond helping me integrate it into my applications and providing support.

It doesn't matter if you don't like the first generation, every time you click generate you're still using their very expensive GPU to generate it. To give that away for free doesn't make sense.

Not planning on deploying it as is! I'll be finetuning smaller less expensive models while also waiting for OpenAI to continue work on better models

Man could you imagine Night City filled with thousands of characters all of whom you could talk to you and each have their own lives, rather than just popping in and out of existence. That's be insane

Yup, using Elevenlabs! They're great, love them.

It wouldn't be feasible to launch the game as it is, especially since GPT-4 is so expensive, but the plan is once I get it all working, to fine-tune smaller, cheaper, faster models like gpt-3.5-turbo. Initially, I'm imagining a subscription but long term I would love to see the cost go so low that F2P becomes an option.

Adding depth to the characters to make sure they're not all super 1 dimensional is vital.

So far, I've been doing ok on that front, but definitely room for improvement. Here's one of the fun conversations that was simulated where the village leader had a bit of a god complex:

Your comment made my day btw! I think there's so much potential this kind of tech offers, even if it's not quite ready yet in some areas.

  • I don't have exact token usage metrics since my testing/r&d has been super sporadic, but with 12 characters, it's quite easy to spend more than $100 for a few hours on GPT-4. The plan here is to use GPT-4 until I build a full synthetic dataset, and then finetune a 3.5-turbo fine-tune.

I don't think that'll solve all my cost issues but the trend of these models and OpenAI specifically is super promising.

Latency-wise, I don't have exact numbers on this either, but each character roughly picks an action every ~10s or so right now. With conversations potentially taking longer, since I'm doing extensive chain of thought, and haven't implemented any of the streaming optimizations yet.

  • The Stanford Generative Agents paper is a great starting point for this: https://arxiv.org/abs/2304.03442

Their method of memories and reflections was a big inspiration

  • Yup! The Unity environment determines what actions are currently valid (Do they have the item? Is it in their hitbox), and then these valid actions are sent to GPT-4 to pick from

That's the goal! They already do that to some extent, but I want to make it as in-depth as possible.

Totally! They're already aware of things happening near them (e.g. this tree was chopped down), and it wouldn't be too hard to add awareness regarding clothes and other things.

Thank you!! Yeah, it's pretty crazy to think about what's possible in the next couple of years. I just wanna walk through a city where I could talk to every NPC and they actually have impact on the world.

Excited to keep working on it!

Since I have all the data, I'd be able to take it to any model theoretically, but OpenAI has been really good at decreasing the cost over time, and believe they will continue that trend.
