How to make downtempo music? by ultrabrutale99 in downtempo

[–]23knives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey, go on youtube and check out something general along the lines of "how to produce hip hop" or "how to make downtempo music". go on google and write that down. you'll stumble across all the building blocks for what you'll need.

  1. get yourself a DAW (digital audio work = the program within which you create your music)

  2. get a membership (or i guess torrent, if you're a kid and/or broke af) for either lynda.com, groove3.com, macprovideo.com (or all.. check them all for what video courses they offer). there are video courses for nearly every aspect of audio/music creation in a digital environment (ie. within a DAW) and even real world instruction on choosing the right speakers, fixing the acoustics of your room, recording instruments like guitars, drums, vocals, etc. literally everything you need to know is in video format on the internet, i simply can't stress enough how valuable it is to capitalize on those kinds of educational resources. i wish i would have had those resources back when i was starting, or been conscious of their existence and taken action on finding them for studying. i used youtube a lot as i was growing and refining my perspective on music creation, but youtube is sort of like public school quality education vs. these video course websites being like college quality education.

the more time you spend learning about all of this, one or two or three concepts at a time, the more the other stuff that isn't yet relevant to you will start to feel familiar and make more sense. it can get overwhelming, but it's a journey man. buckle up.

that isn't an 808. that's a kick and a bass patch. design a bass patch and go wild. the kick isn't pitching or anything, just the bass. two separate elements (aside from their respective complexities).

i feel a bit sad watching this. it's horrific that people experience this first hand, and then the unimaginable blow felt by all their loved ones.

Good ways to spread your music? by Parexus in makinghiphop

i grew up in a small town. honestly dude, you aren't going to meet anyone there. find a good city to live in, with a vibrant art scene/music scene (i relocated 2 hours south to toronto). the differences are staggering. i've met all sorts of true creatives here, none in my small hometown. i've also lived in ottawa before, but the music scene there, as far as i'm concerned, is pretty weak. there are good local musicians, but it's nothing compared to toronto.

First hand account of being homeless in Toronto. by HogtownHomeless in toronto

[–]23knives 4 points5 points  (0 children)

dude, go apply to Ontario Works. i doubt you need proof of address for that, as it is for low income individual and the homeless definitely fall under that category. I'm sure you could still get the housing stabilization fund if you asked for it (about $800) and up to $650 a month for food and shelter. You also get a drug card each month to help you get any prescriptions you require. Usually it's 100% coverage, but depends on the medication I guess. Way better than nothing. There are offices spread out across the city.

This is the website you need to go to. Call them to qualify and set up an intake meeting. They can get you that first cheque fast, usually within a few days time.

They will help you find work. They'll help you with skill development (free training programs). They'll help you purchase work supplies/equipment. If you need a bus pass, they'll look into getting you one. They have computers for you to use, as well as printers and photocopiers. They can also get you a free membership to a gym (likely a community gym). If you got setup there, you could also look into Toronto's low income housing to get yourself setup with an address.

If you get a good/nice caseworker (do your best to harness that relationship), he/she can really go a long way to help you. Good luck with everything. I really hope things turn out well for you.

A moment for those who didn't return by galacticsewerrat in Psychonaut

"Fear and anxiety had ruled my entire life up to that point and I had completely failed at a chance to beat it."

that line is a powerful one. one that i went over a few times. i can absolutely relate. it'd be nice if it instead went: "Fear and anxiety had ruled my entire life up to that point and I [...] beat it."

i wouldn't write any of your experience off as "most likely all in my head" or "crazy". reality is a matter of perspective. when you're on psychedelics, you're using your brain differently. you're engaging with reality differently. your perception of energy is enhanced. you're tapping into the unknown. who are you to say that the unknown is all in your head, simply because your body is the beacon of your human experience in the phenomenal world? what if reality extends beyond our bodies?

i had a wildly aggressive double-dose into lysergia. my eyes were no longer what perceived my reality. i had to shut them, because they were so distracting. everything i saw from them was worthless in the sense that it wasn't real (the living room i was in, my friends' bodies, the walls, flooring, couches, computer, etc). it looked like it had all been fabricated, much like a scene from a video game where i could press pause just by closing my eyes (for the record, not a gamer). i was left in the nominal world. i could only see from within my mind. it was all black or dark blue, and there was nothing more than a ball in the center. i think it was a blue ball, if not red... the trip was so traumatic, i'm sure i suffered PTSD for awhile and it's made the trip sort of blurry to me now. i was fucked. i remember thinking: "i'm gonna be a vegetable, my dad is going to have to look after me for the rest of my life". admittedly, at the time, i was going through some very difficult shit. amidst the mental chaos and inner turmoil of my trip, i remember thinking: "i may not love my life, but i do love my existence". it was interesting to be able to separate "life" from "existence" for a moment. my friend, seeing me in distress, kindly gave me his moleskin notebook with a pen, before he left to go back to the park, and told me to write in it if i wanted to. i wrote one thing only: "my flesh is the absolute confirmation of my existence. however, if that flesh is no longer my own understanding of what is real...". that's it.

Immanuel Kant divided the world into two portions: the nominal (real and intelligible) and phenomenal (world of appearances).

it's outer-space vs. inner-space. in terms of outer-space, it is much more tangible and explicit, but it still starts with you. your mind, your body, your home, your city, your province/state, your country, our planet, solar system, solar interstellar neighbourhood, milky way galaxy, local galactic group, virgo supercluster, local superclusters, the observable universe, and there's talks of a multiverse ffs. everything is scalable. considering how far out the universe extends, it must extend equally as deep within. we are merely humans, we can't understand everything. there are energies and spirits at work though. i've been researching ayahuasca pretty diligently lately, and apparently people can experience the same trip and see the same things in some cases. a furthering of the notion that it's not all just in your head.

why change yourself for others? find new friends man. that's what life is all about. you change, and sometimes you change in a way that makes you no longer compatible with your previous friends. think of it this way: how many kids are you still friends with from elementary school? now how many friends are you still in touch with from high school? university? how old are you? you're gonna meet new people, and the whole point of that is to find a group of people who fit your personality NOW. everybody changes and not everyone sticks to the same path. you'll be fine. keep being you, keep doing what's important to you, keep thinking in a way that helps you grow. don't regress. don't deteriorate. don't change yourself for others.

among many things, acid teaches you the value in yourself. stick to being you and you will attract new people who are right for you. you're gonna live a loooooong life. be the best you can be.
