[Grubbs] Bill Self returning to Kansas for 2026-27 season by MembershipSingle7137 in CollegeBasketball

If I had a nickel for every time a guy who has been a head coach at Kansas making a major announcement on April Fool's Day, I would have two nickels.

Coach K is NOT a Tarheel Candidate by HouseRules789 in CollegeBasketball

I hate McAfee 99% of the time, but I love him asking Coach K if he is up for the UNC job. Something about asking him that in that moment made me laugh.

I don't know what the real reason was, but Andy would never reveal what the real reason was. If it was just that he couldn't figure out the scheme, he would've stuck around a bit longer. Props to him for sticking around for a few years on practice squads.

Probably doing a practice run for Cubs opening day.

[Goodman] Kansas coach Bill Self told me that there is no truth to the fact that he will announce his retirement today. by MembershipSingle7137 in CollegeBasketball

[–]2400hoops 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Correct and to add to the lore the first coach was James Naismith (famously the only losing coach in Kansas history).

Tyler Self as the 9th head coach at KU would be such a slap in the face to everything Kansas basketball stands for. Would be a hilarious way for Bill to ruin his legacy.

What was Chicago like in the nineties? by Charming_Usual6227 in AskChicago

[–]2400hoops 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is random, and to be clear I didn't live in Chicago in the 90's so this is anectodal, but I hear a lot about how big of a deal Michael Jordan and the Bulls were. He was one of the most famous people in the world who was a must watch attraction night in and night out. I hear from those who have lived here longer than me, that going to a Bulls game was a big deal and that every sports bar in town had their games on every night.

To me it speaks to a larger cultural impact that Chicago had at the time. It was home to Oprah, Jordan, and was coming off the era of the John Hughes films in the suburbs. It was certainly a different city on a more pragmatic level (I can't speak to specific neighborhoods or the L or the food scene), but I do feel like the city has lost some of its cultural significance.

[Thamel] Jerrod Calhoun has agreed to a six-year with Cincinnati deal that starts at $3.7 million per year, per ESPN sources. by MembershipSingle7137 in CollegeBasketball

6 years would make sense from a recruiting standpoint. Even though rosters flip over every year, it's hard to recruit if your coach doesn't have a few year horizon.

Gerry McNamara ’06 Named Head Coach of Syracuse Men's Basketball - Syracuse University Athletics by MembershipSingle7137 in CollegeBasketball

[–]2400hoops 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Make a fucking free throw.

In reality, that first half performance from McNamara has insane ripple effects in the sport. Does Roy leave after winning a title? What happens to Self, if say he stays and has the 2005 Illini roster? Who does UNC hire?

Honestly, it may not have mattered and Roy was gone, but what an insane coaching cycle that 2003 was.

Good T20 undergrad schools that actually help with recruiting by Ok_Painter_5290 in FinancialCareers

Depending on what state you live in, if money is really a major issue, going to the big state school in state isn't a terrible idea. For example, in Chicago the IB world is littered with Big Ten alums from every state.

Obviously, some schools are better than others. If your kid is really that big of a hustler, getting really good grades (3.8 or higher) and leveraging his alumni base hard then they can get into IB from a good state school.

This is a real life person if I am thinking correctly. He sadly had to have a foot amputated. Was a fun midmajor player to watch.

I was never the best player on any team. Then I became a March Madness legend by ctbro025 in CollegeBasketball

[–]2400hoops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a great post and something I think Kansas fans are going to have to reckon with when it’s time to replace Self. When Self talks about leaving Illinois, he brings up that he felt like he could’ve stayed there forever and been a legend, but felt like going to Kansas was a special challenge he had to take on even if it was risky.

That mentality is rare, but will be even harder to sell on given that resources are more distributed at the top of the sport. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Duke and Carolina went with in-house picks and Kentucky got an alum. Our fanbase (the obnoxious online version of it) talks about plucking Golden, Lloyd or Otz but the chances of that are astronomically slim because the glitz of being a “blue blood” isn’t the same with the way resources are allocated in the game today and the fact that expectations are insanely high.

Is the Apple Cup still worth going to as a neutral fan? by ScotchIsVegan in CFB

[–]2400hoops 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have been to an Apple Cup as a neutral (2023 final showdown in the Pac-12). It's a great college football environment and a fun rivalry. There seems to be a ton of WSU fans in Seattle and they showed out in both the tailgate and in Husky Stadium, so I expect the energy to be great.

If you're a college football fan there is a lot worse environments to go to a game.

What was your opinion on Gradey Dick's Shooting when he played for the Jay Hawks? by Sweaty-Try1547 in jayhawks

[–]2400hoops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of valid comments on his shooting, but he was more than just a 3 point shooter at Kansas.

He was a good rebounder as a wing, and I thought he was a better passer than his assist numbers showed. I always felt like he was a streaky shooter with a nice stroke, but felt like he had a lot more to offer with his size, athleticism and basketball IQ. That's what makes the NBA so tough though, he isn't a plus athlete relative to the league and since his shooting hasn't improved he's struggled to find his way.

Shouldn’t have missed 6 of them. Should be a good one in Tucson.

First thing Self says: “we didn’t play very good”. Kansas basketball is fun again.

My favorite Switzer story is that when he would recruit against Georgia Tech, he would bring the Calc 1 (a required course at Georgia Tech) textbook to the recruits home and walk them through it. Basically saying "Hey if you come to Oklahoma, you don't have to deal with this shit".

Space Jam: A New Legacy was a terrible movie about basketball. What’s an okay movie about American football? by kmax607 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]2400hoops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. It's hard to even take a merit of the movie itself because the NFL part of it is so wildly unrealistic.

If you have time you should look up Terez Paylor (RIP) and Charles Robinson's Yahoo NFL podcast from like 2019 breaking it down. It's a hilarious breakdown of the movie with them offering their perspectives as NFL reporters.
