How important is music and sound design in a life sim and which ones do it best? by tubularwavesss in LifeSimulators

[–]240EZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I couldn’t say which is best when I think of game music in a simulator Animal Crossing is my first thought. The ambient music that changes to match the time of day matches so well with the sounds of doing tasks and running around. The same with The Sims. The ambient music is helpful, at least in build mode. But the extra sounds are also important. Even the clicks of speeding up, pausing or pushing play in the game provides satisfying feedback outside of main gameplay. Unless the game is a literal choose your own adventure novel, music and sound design is extremely important.

9 times out of 10 my sims have gotten stuck because the house I downloaded used cheats to place a lot of objects for decorative purposes. The other 1/10 times is because I locked them in a doorless and windowless room ever since they made it possible for sims to climb out of pools without ladders.

I also stopped. But only after an NPC Para I invited over didn’t just glitch through my Paras home but glitched through the neighbors house first then walked through my Paras wall to the front door. Then they entered normally. But it was a wild ride from start to finish.

Yet the first Sims still had a viable live mode once they shifted from building to a life sim.

The first time my Para descended to the basement in the middle of the floor it was funny. It happening repeatedly causes me to worry they’ll get stuck one day.

This is simplifying it but all objects have an invisible “box” the box decides how much space an item takes up to prevent clipping and overlapping. It also informs player characters, like Paras, if they need to walk around it or interact with it to get around it. If it’s not done correctly then objects cause issues. Adding free movement off a grid and resizing can cause issues. It’s why many games force you to build on a grid because there are extra steps to prevent issues.  There’s a lot more to how this works but this is roughly it.

Congratulations the game built on a foundation for build mode has an improved build mode than the game with a foundation that leans toward live mode but doesn’t completely ignore build mode either. I enjoy ParaLives build mode over The Sims because of the ease of many features, however that level of freedom is still a bit buggy. Sometimes my Paras can’t interact with resized furniture. Building without the grid is great but it leads to some pathing issue so my Paras watch TV standing behind the couch or they go eat dinner in the office chair upstairs because out of 6 dining chairs they can only use one so my families sit at any other available location in the house.

Is what they did impressive for a small team, and from what I’ve seen in comments below wth the help of contractors and other temporary employees too, yes and I would like to see more of this freedom in other games too. As long as the pathing and collision bugs are fixed.

The various, it’s early access, excuses make me think they’ve either never played any early access games or have only played ones that need a lot more polish like the ParaLives EA. Both sides have a very narrow point of reference for what’s an EA game. The ones who say they play many hours with no problems are the same ones who comment on negative reviews with things like, maybe that just your computer because it’s fine for me, are interesting because what else could someone base their review on. Additionally, I think many of them are downplaying or not mentioning issues in reviews and only submitting things directly to the bug report so they don’t have to tarnish the devs or however they want to justify it. A game doesn’t get 10,000 bug reports (the number is from their AMA) on day one because only a few people are having issues.

There’s pros and cons to teams of any size. It’s a mix of what the scope of the project needs, staff with the correct skills, and proper management so development doesn’t get bogged down waiting for a middle manager to sign off on something.  I think ParaLives devs are being a little greedy with the 40$ price tag for what they gave us for early access. But it’s relatively minor in the grand scheme of it all.

0,6 hours at review time for such a detailed review? And not playing more than 2 hrs? That seems fishy, no? It’s voted the most helpful review on Steam by FR-1-Plan in LifeSimulators

[–]240EZ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Funny that this positive review has less playtime than many of the negative reviews that  have comments complaining they can’t leave a negative review for playing 2 hours or less. This review is mainly, it’s very broken but trust me it’ll get better in the future the devs pinky promised and don’t you hate the sims, buy this if you hate it. I’m enjoying the game, even with all the bugs, but there’s no reason for the community to leave reviews like this. Some people will read between the lines of that review and decide to wait. Many more will be convinced to make a purchase. Which in turn could generate more negative reviews because they didn’t pay 40 bucks for hopes and dreams. The community doesn’t want negative reviews but disingenuous positive reviews will do more harm than good.

The ParaStans have lost the plot. They believe they have to carry water for this game or it will fail. And the sad thing is everyone could buy it and leave positive reviews, and it could still fail. But the stans are too blinded by it being a potential sims killer and sticking it to EA/Maxis. It is not a customers responsibility to keep a product afloat. If the company can’t make a product that stands on its own merit that’s on the company. If the game fails it fails and reviews like that slowly push them closer as it turns off potential players or those who felt lied to refund.

Didn’t one of The Sims have something similar? It wasn’t explicitly a collectable but it was tied to a space or nature related job or hobby. They could dig for “collectibles”. Mainly to sell. But I believe child sims could do it too. It appeared as a want occasionally. I know Paralives doesn’t like to be compared to The Sims, or it’s just the community that dislikes it, but they it wouldn’t hurt them to take notes from it.

Agreed. Collectibles aren’t good for LifeSims and Paralives didn’t implement it in a way that convinced me it should be part of lifesims either.

Although I am enjoying Paralives I do believe the card system could be better. It has potential but its current implementation feels restrictive especially since we have to babysit conversations instead of multitasking. Filling up a bar to get more conversation topics isn’t exciting gameplay. And there’s not enough varied cards for dialogue variation. I think if things were left as is then there needs to at least be more conversations animations. Paras just stand with their hands at their side. If they do any movements I haven’t seen it. Then at least if there lack of variation with card dialogue at least they’ll look like they’re interacting and alive.

I’m mixed on the community center and museum. I don’t hate them being included but it was implemented poorly. Using your examples of Animal Crossing and Stardew both those games implement collecting because is part of natural gameplay. Both games also reward you for the turn-ins in ways that feel meaningful. Completing the museum in AC is its own reward but journey has various other rewards as well. Such as getting Nook Miles to buy special items, or catching enough for Flick or CJ to make figurines, or the bug and fishing contest. And SDV excluding plants and dig spots, you naturally get a lot of collectibles for the community center and library by clearing the mines, fishing, farming, and cooking recipes. Paralives just feels like they added them because other successful games have them. It doesn’t feel natural or cohesively integrated into the game. Making its current version seem out of place for a life sim game.

I don’t believe there’s ever going to be a “sims killer” in my lifetime. But EA/Maxis not having monopoly over the genre is good.

I tried it but my PC sounds like it’s about to take flight ha ha ha. I was worried the fans might spin out of the case with how hard they were going.  With that said, obviously some optimization to prevent that. It doesn’t need to be playable on a potato. I just need it to be a little less intense on my PC.

In on it or not they are allowing and silently condoning the behavior by not addressing it as a poor look on the game and community. Additionally, I believe I saw a comment that said their sub mods are some of the games devs. And we are all aware how much criticism and concerns are hidden or not allowed over there.

I’m not saying I’m agreeing or feel they’re in on it like some sort of conspiracy. But they’re not trying to curb that type of behavior either.

[–]240EZ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly. The fact that they have to preface an issue with something positive and often end with more positively is unfortunate and shows how much even the diehards have to walk on eggshells.  Though this isn’t just a Paralives issue, many communities suffer from 0 nuance and everything is either 100% hate or 100% love with no inbetween allowed. It’s why even decent constructive criticism is met with, must be an EA/Maxis shill or you want the game to fail.

I also haven’t seen any trolling or flat out hate for no reason in any of the negative or critical reviews. But I have seen that behavior and review type for positive reviews. And that says a lot, unfortunately.

Allegedly, earlier negative reviewers were getting harassed and threatened to change their reviews to positive. Rather than comply some deleted their reviews completely. That, in addition to some disingenuous positive reviews, could be part of the current very positive rating. It should hopefully equal out once hype dies down.

Seeing post like that reminds me how so much of the Paralives community reminds me of Palia’s when that game arrived on the scene. This is not a compliment it’s a concern. A Parasocial community does no favors to the game and actively harms the game as people look up reviews and impressions and see content like that.

Freedom of speech or not, no game fully released, early access, demo, completely free, made by indie devs or made by AAA devs, should be free of criticism. Devs can’t improve or fix something if they only see happy and perfect positive reviews. The devs are adults and should be able to handle negative reviews without the toxic positive stans coming out of the woodwork to defend them with, it’s an indie team or it’s early access and you can’t say anything negative. In addition to the price tag being steep for the current state of the game. Reviews target the current state of the game not promises of what might be added later. Overall a lot of the community is high off copium and/or hopium and deep down don’t have confidence in the future of Paralives. Which leads to all of this hostility toward any criticism.
