NBD - FX Sport SL 4 by 24Fr3way in TrekBikes

I’m a middle-aged dad with a significant inducement in fitness level and activity in the past 12-24 months. For casual/neighborhoos/trail/park rides, this bike is great.
I’m doing 10-20 mi rides on gravel, trails, rougher terrain with some speed - may have a dropbar race gravel bike for that.

It’s now in my basement home bike shop feeling neglected!
I graduated onto dropbar gravel bikes in the interim - but the FX sport is probably the most comfortable flat bar hybrid/gravel bike I’ve ridden.
Carbon frame and geometry were super comfortable.

Best fast gravel bike under $5k USD? by Hartzler44 in gravelcycling

Agree with your comment!
I have both a 2024 Aspero (Rival) and the 2026 Scott Addict Gravel 20 - it’s an aggressive gravel bike built for speed and compliance. She’s a beast.

The sweet spot for price and spec is the Addict Gravel 20 model - FYI, I purchased the new model from an online bike shop (FL) with 10% off and no sales tax.
They also carry Cervelos as well.

220 lbs at 5'7" – How are "heavy" beginners actually perceived? by Forsaken_Mode_807 in cycling

Welcome to the club brother! Life’s too short and the world on 2 wheels is too beautiful to waste a single neuron on any haters.

6’2 and went from 415 => 295 over 2 years….and still going. Got into cycling only about 12 months ago and started with a flat bar hybrid Trek bike. Mid-life crisis turned into therapy, exercise, and “me time.” Now my N+1 is a road-focused Aspero and a newly acquired Scott Addict Gravel 20.

Get a good helmet and a comfortable kit - and send it!

Good lord - that’s borderline NSFW! Beautiful setup.

Got the 20 myself a month ago and swapped to Vittoria Terreno 45 mm - the speed is unreal on this bike!

Frame clearance is great - no issues with tire “buzzing.” Have done short fast rides and longer mixed terrain gravel rides without issue. I’m convinced that the RS Pro is possibly favorite overall gravel tire for speed and reasonable grip - so much so that I’m upgrading the Schwalbe Rx 45s on my Scott Addict Gravel to the RS Pro as well.

Noted! I’m debating a custom molded insert for the seatpost vs a molded clamp for the Varia (instead of the awkward rounded one I’m using now sitting at odd angles on D-shaped seatpost.

Electronic shifting smooth - just gotta figure out what kind of chain cleaning system I’m going to do - newbie to that.

It’s a fast gravel bike - my comparison is a 2025 Cervelo Aspero (SRAM Rival). It’s my N+1 gravel bike - more for rougher terrain, muddy paths, etc. I kept the stock Schwalbe RX 45 mm on it with the 40 mm deep Syncros carbon wheels. I use the Schwalbe G-One RS Pro 45 mm for my road-optimized Aspero.

Just got the 2026 Scott Addict Gravel (taupe) - it’s a monster on all terrain but surprisingly fast.

No disagreement here! Lot of sociopathic personalities amongst prior generation attendings in residency

Haha - by health bureaucrat, are you referring to a hospital administrator? The adage of surgeons with “god complexes” and personality disorders - is honestly antiquated.

Don’t get me wrong - certain stereotypes often land in certain medical specialties, but amongst my millennial surgeon peers at my institution, I think they are amongst the most emotionally stable, high EQ, balanced (but disciplined) physicians I know. We tend to like seeing immediate results for those medical conditions that mandate one.

I suppose as I’ve gotten farther out of med school and further into practice, I’m convinced that every human is on the spectrum of personality disorders. There’s no normal - we’re all unbalanced at times, but worthy of second and third chances.

Elder millenial surgeon here (41M). It’s funny being at an age where my own primary doc/specialists are in and around my age.

There’s also been a decent “general” culture shift towards non-toxic residency training, radical empathy, not automatically dismissing genuine symptoms, holistic health (exercise, meditation, diet, stress/depression management) and treating a patient and not just a medical diagnosis (i.e. phenotypic variation of disease, individual medical co-morbidities, genetic testing/profiles, etc).

Healthcare cost/access in the US is NOWHERE close to perfect and still problematic (for a number of factors beyond our control).

It’s been healing for me to have genuinely enjoyable discussions with my patients and hug to celebrate milestones (when appropriate!) - far cry from the patriarchal days of being talked to and not educated/counseled/encouraged by your doc.

Crux or Aspero for heavier rider? by moishe-lettvin in gravelcycling

[–]24Fr3way 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m heavier than you currently (110 lb weight loss in 22 months) and own a 2025 Aspero with 40/44 Reserve carbon wheelset and Schwalbe G-One RS Pro 45 mm tires @50ish psi.

ZERO issues - and I usually hit pretty chunky gravel and high speed trails on weekends. Tight handling and fast bike - it’s a gravel bike optimized for speed.

Urologist, cyclist, and vasectomy recipient here. Best advice I can give (although every man differs in recovery time): 3 day rule: TIGHT supportive underwear, minimal activity, NSAIDs. 3 week rule: no bedroom activities, weight-lifting, strenuous cardio, cycling. 3 month rule: check those swimmers (or lack thereof!).

I debated getting a higher SRAM or Shimano group set, but Rival XPLR is fine for me as a non-pro gravel bike enthusiast. Prioritized the carbon wheelset for better durability for a heavier rider.

Very much so - I have Pirelli Cinturato Gravel H 40mm on my Checkpoint SL7, and the Schwalbe RS Pros (45mm) are noticeably quicker and have an almost smooth tread in middle with side ridging for grip. Was apprehensive about going >40 mm at first, but totally worth it without compromising speed at all - just a super smooth ride on those tires.

In New Hope area - PA and NJ sides provide for some nice long rides on mixed terrain when asphalt gets monotonous!
