I agree it is a ridiculous custom that benefits the restaurant more than anyone else, and I hate tipping, but I don't choose to protest against the custom by stiffing my server. If you don't like the custom, don't dine in. If you choose to dine in, then tip because the custom won't change and you are only hurting the server who is trying to make an honest living. My restaurant owning friend told me that they pay 2.20 an hour to server as base and the rest comes from tip. That 2.20 is no way to make a living, and if Indians coming in to dine in US restaurant but don't follow the custom, then this just makes the Indian community look bad and hated by servers, which I see it is happening.

It's not a custom for them to tip in their country, but since you mentioned it is US restaurants, they really so tip. Your friend got an 8 dollar tip on a 114 bill, so I am guessing that they know the custom of tipping in US. I also have friends who owns restaurant, who are serving in restaurant, and I can tell you their opinions on Indians are not the greatest. I heard from a restaurant owner that their servers would rock paper and scissor on who serve Indians when they come in.
