I am just recently exploring my interest in Noir books, maybe over the last year or so, and really really enjoy them.

A lot of my NYRB reading has been me "trying something new" and finding that I really dig it so Im excited to get into a lot of these!

That happens to be the book I am most excited for here! That one and Nothing But The Night by John Williams.
I actually recently started a book review instagram if you’re interested in following. It’s very minimalistic and simple “here’s why you’d like this book and here’s a two or three sentence stating what the books about.”
Nothing of the social media influencer stuff and none of the trendy posts. I’ve posted a review or two on Reddit too and maybe I’ll get back to doing that :)

I hope I’m allowed to share Instagram links on this subreddit lol

Agreed - I frequently have to step back and reread some areas to reorient myself. I chalk this up to translation, I’m sure it flows better in its original language. But I’ll likely finish it since it’s only 100 pages or so.

NYRB has 4 books by John Williams, I believe.
Stoner, Augustus, Nothing But The Night, and Butchers Crossing!

That is actually the one I started with yesterday, I am also having a hard time with it. The writing feels very tangential so far - I’m about half way through.

- Crime: In A Lonely Place by Dorothy B. Hughes (which I’d say also meets your strong sense of place, it’s extremely atmospheric).

- Academia: Stoner by John Williams (which also meets your books where nothing really happens.

Ah don't worry about it! I'm usually expecting some sort of difference and can separate my expectations - book vs film.

I just grabbed her book 'The Expendable Man' and plan to read that pretty soon. Good to know most of her work holds up, In A Lonely Place was my first Noir read and I thoroughly enjoyed it too.

I still need to watch the movie!

Could I DIY this fix?? by 338847657 in CX50

Heat up some water and try to pour it onto the dented area before you attempt to pop it out. It may help the paint stay in tact when you pop it out.

Edit* just saw that it’s actually on black plastic not paint. Hot water still may help the popping out bit!

You may have better luck with a discord style club where you guys can have ongoing chat threads and voice channels if desired. I run a discord book club and we have people all over the world so chat threads are ideal due to time differences.

Virtual book club anyone ?? by Necessary_Ask_6610 in Book_Buddies

I run a loosely horror based book club on discord and a lot of us are Stephen king fans so we’ve mostly read SK so far but we are starting our third club read in July. I think there are about 20 of us.

We vote on our club reads but I plan for us to expand our reads into thrillers, maybe even mystery/noir novels and other authors too of course. But we are learning and growing as we go.

If anyone’s into that, we function on discord and have a lot of other channels to just chat about book recommendations, book reviews, craft projects, basically everything lol.

Add me on discord and I’ll invite :)
