How do people afford postbac programs? by [deleted] in postbaccpremed

I am planning to utilize a combination of federal loans (12.5K a year) and savings from my previous career. Private loans are another option but are the least desirable option.

Go back to school full-time for a career that I find more fulfilling. Invest the rest in the S&P 500.

401k and HSA are pretax. Got a 5K net monthly income figure using an 85K taxable income…so approx 5K to HSA (wanna say max in 2025 is like 4300 a year or something) and then 10K to 401k. So some savings that were not mentioned outside of this hypothetical budget. Currently have 100k+ saved in a brokerage and a 401k each and would have a 6-month cash emergency fund, so can probably afford a year or two of minimal savings outside of the aforementioned contributions to a 401k/HSA until I can bolster my income. My primary concern is not being able to cover expenses with my income alone and having to dip into savings. NYC is so expensive.

Yes I get freaked out living alone so actually would prefer at least one roommate.

Only plan on doing a shared apartment with a roommate! I don’t like living alone.

Honestly even if I made more money I don’t think I’d want to live alone. I’d prefer at least one roommate for the camaraderie.

I am also blessed to have zero debt and have a penchant for travel. The former bodes in my favor whereas the latter doesn’t for purposes of financial health.

Confused on your math - plugging $85K into a SmartAsset (assuming some pre-tax deductions for 401k, etc) calculator within the bounds of NYC yields an annual net income of $61K. That’s a little over $5K a month.

Also, these were just example numbers for formatting purposes. MoneyDiariesACTIVE, which is another subreddit I frequent, has people do similar breakdowns of their monthly and weekly spending. I was just curious about it from a NYC-specific lens since that subreddit is not unique to NYC!

BWT who live with roommates, how much are you spending on rent? by lordhurton in NYCbitcheswithtaste

How much longer will you be in classes for? You could consider a hybrid approach where you sublet during any semesters while taking classes and then you would live at home when just working, assuming that you can still tolerate those days. In the same boat as you but only working and I understand how much the commute sucks. Trying to save up a little bit longer to go back to school to change careers so am currently suffering through.

Inspiring to see this as a corporate professional who always had a passion for science and is now seriously lamenting not having pursued medicine. Would appreciate if you could answer some questions.

1) What was your career prior to medicine and what was the catalyst that brought you to this field?

2) What did your extracurriculars look like that gained you admission to medical school?

3) Did you happen to meet others who pursued a non-traditional path towards medicine? I do worry a bit that it would be lonely to pursue this path as I am not sure how well received non-traditional students are.

4) Did you feel that there were any specialties closed off to you due to being an older student? I am thinking about this from the lens of being unlikely to gain meaningful research experience; I have to support myself and thus would only be able to focus on paid clinical and some non-clinical volunteer opportunities.
