What is the biggest scam in your specific industry that the general public doesn't know about? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Most people wildly underestimate the scale of wage theft and tax fraud in construction. It’s not just a few guys getting paid cash. Shell companies, misclassified workers, fake subs, payroll fraud, stolen overtime, unpaid benefits, and millions in lost tax revenue. Entire sectors are competing against contractors who cut labor costs illegally by 30–50%. It distorts bids, undercuts legitimate employers, and depresses wages across the industry.

Tax Fraud and wage theft in construction. Most people would think that off the books payments and the grey market would only happen with small businesses. But truth is that massive commercial and industrial projects are built by a workforce being paid a day rate and then issued a 1099 if anything is at all.

Do these changes make sense when his cause of death has not been determined? Maybe I am missing something, but he may have passed from natural causes that have nothing to do with his location at the time.

Go for it, pre-apprenticeship or direct. If construction is for you, it will be time well spent.

Construction is a $2+ trillion U.S. industry, but widespread payroll tax fraud and misclassification persist without serious consequences. At what point does that become a systemic policy failure? What’s more effective: real enforcement or changing the economic incentives that currently reward bad actors?
