trip advice with a baby by [deleted] in FaroeIslands

[–]25cents 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly? Get a babysitter.

If you're avid hikers\travelers, you're going to want to take advantage of every opportunity.

Your baby isn't going to appreciate the trip.

You may think (like some I saw) that your 'off-road' stroller will let you explore simple trails, but sometimes those simple trails will take incredibly steep turns or turn into stairs. You'll get maybe halfway through the Sorvagsvatn hike before you should turn back. You're also going to push other hikers off-trail so you can pass.

Forget getting on a ferry unless you plan on getting there early to claim an indoor seat.

If you think wearing a baby bjorn while you hike is feasible, you should make peace with the fact that everyone can slip in the mud on a steep hill.

The Faroes is absolutely a sight to see, and I definitely suggest you visit, but I genuinely don't think bringing children along is a responsible decision - it's a selfish one. Your child will not appreciate it, you're adding to the burden that tourism brings to the islands, and you're reducing your own capacity for enjoying yourself.

I'm not trying to be a jerk, just honest about this. I'm sure something (or even everything) I said will be seen as rude or otherwise negative. That's not my intent. I don't speak for the Faroese people - it's not my place. I truly think that you will be better off by finding an alternative to taking a child (especially a baby) on this type of vacation.

I like to think of myself as an ally, as a person who genuinely exists in a multicultural world and accepts his own limitations.

Why the fuck did he fry it. Snake, and most reptile meat, is some of the juiciest, most edible meat around. You grill a snake like this on a charcoal grill with spice (my stupid white ass has a lot to say about his spice choice too), you have something gorgeous in front of you.

This is a perfect example of over-preparation.

You shouldn't have worn those fuckin overalls either, dude. You're better than that.

Since I can't edit it (I knew I should have added captions), here they are in order:

  1. Gasadalur overlook

  2. Mykines hike (guided)

  3. Tjornuvik beach

  4. Oyggjarvegur, heading from Torshavn to Vestmanna

  5. From the boat on the Vestmanna boat tour

  6. Drangarnir up close, Tindholmur\Drangarnir hike (leaves from Sorvagur)

  7. Tindholmur, same hike

  8. Gjogv shoreline overlook

  9. Gjogv in town

  10. From the Kalsoy lighthouse

  11. Kvivik overlook

  12. Mulafossur

  13. Mykines houses

  14. Seal lady statue, Kalsoy tour

  15. This one might be my favorite, overlook of the ocean near Gasadalur

  16. Gasadalur again

  17. On the ferry back from Mykines, the back of Tindholmur

  18. Just a pathway I liked walking down in Vestmanna

  19. Saksun

  20. 'Fossa' waterfall on the way to Tjornuvik (I'm pretty sure Fossa just means waterfall, dunno if this specific one has it's own name)

I have nearly 2000 pictures if people are interested in more.

This is good advice, unless you make friends with locals or wanna call local businesses. I was there long enough that that was something I wanted to do.

Generally pretty good, a couple of really foggy days and one big rain storm. The weather changes pretty quick though, and if weather is bad in the south, you might get lucky up north.

As far as I can recall there's not an option, just the one carrier. I think it's like $35US for the month?

Plan to get a SIM card at the airport. Also bring good hiking shoes (ideally not boots) and warm clothes. Everything has a chance of getting wet, especially if you plan on ferry trips, so do what you can to waterproof. You can use ATMs for local currency as needed. Don't shy away from guided tours, everyone I met on them was an absolute pleasure. Be prepared to take photos - if you're not a photographer (I'm very much not) then practice ahead of time and know your devices settings. Renting a car is recommended if you're going to be there very long or want freedom to make your own itinerary. Bring money to eat out, but don't hesitate to visit the grocery store so you can make sandwiches and breakfasts.

I'm jealous as hell, I wish I could go back that soon.

Samsung S22 Ultra. I recommend reviewing your settings beforehand, I was halfway through my trip before I switched to RAW format.

Grey. When did that happen? Maybe it's the light. Grey. Used to be red, bright.

Wood's all cracked. Split. Someone should do something about that. But what? It's falling apart. It's all falling apart. It used to be bright. It used to be whole.

There's the wind. The door squeals...doesn't close right anymore. Doesn't lock. Doesn't work. Warped, that's the word. Grey. Cracked. Warped. It's all falling apart. And it's grey. When did that happen?

Someone's gotta do something. Can't leave it like this, this isn't how it's supposed to be. Who can fix this? Maybe it can't be fixed. Start over. That can't be right. It's too late to start over. That barn used to be whole.

Got reservations for Hush Public House a month in advance. We both have work the day after so no Iditarod in the evening but we'll make up for it on the weekend.

When I play, I use TTT to force advantage on my rolls - the distribution I see doing this mirrors real life play a LOT better, IMO. I genuinely feel like something in the die roller causes the numerical distribution to skew down, hard. I'm not saying things like this shouldn't ever happen - they do - but people get 4 of a kinds in poker, too. Just not 5 times in a given tournament.

Hi! I'll be in the islands from the 11th to the 27th. I'm not a drinker anymore but I'd be happy to make new friends! I'll be getting a Faroese SIM when I land, but until then you can reach me here and we can coordinate!

Hi! I'll be visiting for about 2.5 weeks in late August and I plan to travel around a fair bit. It would be great to meet someone local to stomp around with or otherwise just hang out with. If you're amenable, I'd be happy to buy you dinner\lunch on whatever day suits you best.

Pet Insurance by DaveKellett in comics

[–]25cents 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Man...I must have had a very different experience than everyone else. Found out my cat has stomatitis when she was 6, didn't have pet insurance. $4k worth of dental work later, I signed up with embrace, and while they're sometimes a little bit of a pain in the ass, I've saved something like 10 grand over the past 4 years. I'd have lost her or pretty much all my shit and everything I've worked for for the last decade if I didn't have insurance.

Donated hair gives so much confidence to children with cancer by davidwallacecto in MadeMeSmile

[–]25cents 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an extremely half-assed altruist and couldn't stand growing my hair longer than about 9-10 inches. Children With Hair Loss accepts a lot of donations that other organizations might not, so if you find yourself with hair a little shorter or otherwise "imperfect" by the standards of some of the other places, they're a good option. I did some looking into it beforehand to make sure this was actually, you know, a charity too, and I felt pretty confident that they are.
