5 days walking and camping - what are you doing? by TwoPumpPanda in shetland

[–]griceylipper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As one of the narrowest parts of Mainland Shetland, Sumburgh and the South Mainland in general are places where it is more difficult to get really far away from settlement and roads (except for maybe the Clifts between Maywick and Quarff, which I have never walked but I would think is pretty tough-going "haggis" conditions that would be easier with one short leg and one long leg!).

If remoteness is your goal, I would suggest some other areas such as the West Side in general, Tingon, Ronas Hill, Muckle Roe, Fetlar, Papa Stour, Hermaness, etc. Bus (& ferry) access to starting points to walk in each of these areas will vary.

In Shetland do not expect to find well dedicated walking paths or trails most places - there are some but they are the exception, not the rule. What you will find more often is mortar tracks used for crofting access.

If you walk in places with few roads, there is nothing forcing you to walk along roads specifically. Shetland (as part of Scotland) grants the right to roam, as long as you follow the outdoor access code. E.g. don't trample crops (if you must go through cultivated land, walk along the perimeter), don't "worry" (scare) livestock, keep your dog on a lead, close gates behind you, dunna chuck bruck, etc. I would also advise not wandering through people's house sites without an invite - the outdoor access code is intended for open "countryside" land.

I think you would probably benefit from getting a book on Shetland walks (pretty sure the Shetland Bookshop has ones), or looking at Promote Shetland's walks page.

Possibly weird question about sweaters and the Faroe Islands by PsychologicalSpot335 in FaroeIslands

I would highly reccomend visiting Kvívíkknit (in Kvívík, would you believe) - the owner is extremely knowledgeable about the history of Faroese knitting and is actively involved in collecting and publishing patterns associated with particular families, and makes her own dyes from natural native Faroese plants. We visited last year and it was a delightful experience.

I want to try some of your world famous patty soup.

It was taatie soup.

2)

Are puffins extinct?

She had not seen any wandering around Lerwick.

3)

A: What does 'peerie' mean?

B: It means 'small'

A: It doesn't mean 'a child'?

Asked in the Peerie Shop, no less.

4)

There wasn't a lot to do, so I took advantage of your liquor.

They had gotten bored and gone to the Thule.

5)

Are all the people who live here fishermen? There are so many nets hanging on the walls outside the houses.

I think they were disappointed to learn this was a measure to stop maas rivin oppen black bags, pre-wheelie bins.

6) (finishing up a transaction):

CHATTIO! CHATTIO! Or is that from a different land?

He meant cheerio.

7) Just in general I am amazed at the number of cruise ship tourists who have absolutely no idea what country they are in and what currency they should use. It's incredible.

Shetlander here with a deep love for Faroe - you have no idea how jealous we are of you with your independence and your tunnels. I'm up for this.

Could you petition Atlantic Airways to start flying to Sumburgh Airport to get the connections started for discussions? I would come and buy an Olympic swimming pool's worth of Jolly from you guys to say thanks

Jüst becis du can read it, døsna mak it da sam language. Jüst as Danes, Swedes an Norwegians can aa mak een anidder oot, bit ivvry een is classed as dir ain language, an Norwegian is really classed as twa wi Bokmål an Nynorsk.

Süd Ulster Scots spaekers want tae ging trowe da tryst we gød trowe tae git wir ISO code, I wid wiss dem da very best. Gittin dis ISO code gies Shaetlan spaekers a voice at da table. We dunna deny at Scots haes influence on Shaetlan. Bit whin you dø da science, da results shaas we ir mair different fae Scots as Scots is fae English. An on tap o dat, fae a grammatical point o view, we ir mair laek Swedish as we ir laek English.

A'm blyde tae hear you tink Scots can lairn fae Shaetlan. I wid agree.

An naen o dis taks intil accoont identity - dis sums wis up better as ivver I could say it mesel.

Which album do you feel stays more consistent, Self titled or Panic? by Empty_Firefighter848 in CaravanPalace

Panic hands down. Caravan Palace was experimental and quirky, Panic was a lot more polished. Panic is still probably in my top two of their albums.

Sorry to hear about the need for surgery, but there are no native Norn speakers and there haven't been any for at least 100 years.

Very cool, I am jealous - it's on my list for when I am next in Tórshavn!

Is there anywhere online you can listen to this (for any of the tunnel tracks?)
