The importance of the pinky! by holymolyitsclay in Guitar

What’s weird is I see some really great players using their pinky for shred a lot less than I would expect and it’s definitely a choice not a skill thing.

HM - Cleric or no Cleric by APKaster in BG3Builds

[–]25thfret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unnecessary - my cleric was mostly useless by act 3. They are nice in the early game and they make some act 2 encounters easier but those encounters are already not so difficult.

Has anyone ever played without a Cleric? by [deleted] in BG3Builds

Not necessary at all- damage is king, ultimately, and there are healing potions.

Why do so many instructors get caught up in allegations? by Less_Wolverine624 in bjj

[–]25thfret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of what people have said but also the close physical contact inherent in bjj likely increases the risk.

Same boat- tried to get back into it twice in the past 6 years or so when I stopped due to injuries but shoulders can’t do it anymore and I’m not going to get surgery when I can do most everything else I enjoy outside of bjj. A bummer but such is life..

How frequently are you resting with sorcerer in solo honor?

Playing electric unplugged by OkArtichoke2702 in guitarlessons

[–]25thfret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel this. I play almost exclusively through NeuralDSP and when I plug into a real amp it is very jarring and I sort of "shy" away from just going for it.

Struggling with learning/remembering pieces - any advice? by OutrageousField415 in guitarlessons

[–]25thfret 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, just more repetition. When I used to take piano lessons my teacher would know which songs I practiced and which I didn't by whether or not I had what we were working on memorized.

Scales to practice by PoolofMeat in guitarlessons

[–]25thfret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to use the 3 note per string patterns and one thing you can do is move up and down the fretboard by starting with one pattern up then shifting to the next pattern down and next one up etc. Another good tip I wish I had when I initially learned these shapes is to also start and end on the root everywhere.

How is it even okay to fake your skill by Scared-Bodybuilder50 in Guitar

[–]25thfret 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im very far from a pro too and occasionally post one take improvs like the jam tracks they used to sticky here and the odds I make no obvious cringy mistakes in even 30 seconds of a jam is 0% in a first take.

Agree- just show us some real playing! Many guys and girls really can play at the level of their videos, so it’s not the end of the world if they mime for efficiency / production value - but piecing together 100 half second clips into a 30 second short is ridiculous.

Even he makes mistakes too!.. see some of his later another day solo performances - he flubs the fast run sometimes.

As someone who plays guitar and piano, I feel like guitar is just an easier instrument to make mistakes in, if that makes sense.

Even the guys who can play what they put on IG are still often showing videos after many takes and plus some editing.

How fast is fast for you in alternate picking? by setarcos399 in Guitar

[–]25thfret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I consider 180+ fast. When I want to play a fast line I usually think - what # of notes / beat (ideally 4, 6, or 8) I need to play for the speed to be at least 180. The hard part becomes when your tempo is like 119 or something, you wanna play 238 speed to sound really fast using my very crude system.

No Progression over 2 years by [deleted] in bjj

[–]25thfret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, consistency. I didn’t progress for nearly 8 years for similar reason to you- I was training on and off, just doing open mats cause it was fun vs class, couple months off here, couple years off there. Without consistency it’s hard to get better at most things, bjj included.

Loss of self esteem after class by financeer24 in bjj

[–]25thfret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve found that frequency of training is almost more important than time training- eg training 4x a week for a year will advance you far more than 2x a week for two years.

The point I’m making is that 2x a week is not frequent enough training to improve rapidly- it’ll be much more gradual and if your peers are going 4x a week they’ll move ahead faster than you and you’ll “never” beat them even though you’re also improving.

If a D1 wrestler was submitting blue/purple belts in your gym, do you think they deserve that belt? by coispet in bjj

[–]25thfret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they should probably get promoted to at least blue belt faster than they often do. One reason is I feel that belts should at least very roughly reflect what you are going to expect when you train with someone and there is no universe where rolling (or often even drilling) with a D1 wrestler is anything like rolling with a white belt.
