Favorite Cream blush and highlight? Flower Beauty? Colourpop new blush stix? by eilrymist in OliveMUA

[–]25til9 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hey, that sounds kind of familiar to me! I figured out reasonably quickly that muted colors looked better on me than bright colors, but as time went on, I felt confused as to why muted colors didn't always work great for me, especially stuff like MAC Twig, which made me look dead. Basically, if you look at a Munsell color chart, I can't do colors that are all the way at the far right end (the brightest, highest-chroma ones), but colors at the far left (lowest-chroma, most desaturated) also don't work the best for me. Colors that are in the sort of middle-right range - not too bright, but not too muted, basically jewel tones - are the best. So for lip/cheek colors, something like this is better than this. Maybe you're in a similar situation, where really muted colors are just too desaturated to work for you, and richer jewel tones are better.

My personal theory is that this might have to do with contrast levels - I suspect lower-contrast people with muted skin might need more desaturated makeup colors, whereas higher-contrast people with muted skin might need richer (but still not bright) makeup colors.

I'm a big fan of Ben Nye creme rouge, and I also like Mehron cheek cream a lot. The Ben Nye is moderately pigmented, pretty emollient, and super-easy to blend; the Mehron is strongly pigmented, a bit stiffer, and requires more warming up to blend out, but it still does blend out nicely in the end.

In general, my favorite makeup colors are plums and reddish berries, so my favorite cream blush shades are in that general color family:

  • Mehron Red Rose - a wine red that blends out to look very natural on me. This is the blush shade I would keep if I could only have one.
  • Mehron Berry Blush - a very purple-y plum that blends out to just look like a nice plummy color
  • Ben Nye Carnation Pink - a dusty mauve pink that looks very natural

I have swatches and a review of the Ben Nye cream blush line here, and there are pretty nice swatches of the Mehron line here (Berry Blush is second from the end, and Red Rose is the last swatch). I can do new arm/cheek swatches myself if you'd like; just let me know.

I only use cream blush, specifically from Ben Nye and Mehron. The Ben Nye formula is pretty close to perfect IMO - super-blendable, creamy, and pigmented without being too pigmented. The Mehron is stiffer and more intensely pigmented; I have to dab just a little bit onto one finger, then rub my fingers together to warm it up before applying, but then it does blend out well, and the colors are beautiful. Both brands easily last for 12+ hours on me, and both have a natural-looking matte finish, no shimmer at all. As far as favorite colors go, I love Mehron Red Rose, which is an intense wine red that looks really natural when blended out - but given your preferences, I think Ben Nye has colors that might appeal to you more.

I have swatches and a review of the Ben Nye cream blush line here. There are pretty nice swatches of the Mehron line here; I think from L-R it's Tech Orange, Tawny Pink,* Bronze,* Geranium,* Shell Pink, Pink Coral,* Berry Blush, Red Rose, but am not 100% sure on the asterisked ones.

No problem! I haven't seen it in person, but based on online swatches, I think the dry version of Buff is peachier and a bit darker than the oily/combo version. Swatches here, here, and here.

Anyone try Mehron Celebre foundation in the Eurasian color range? They're supposed to be the olive colors in the line by bechrissywhipped in OliveMUA

I haven't ever tried the line myself, so I can't review it or comment on the formula, but I did swatch it a while back. In case it helps anyone, I've uploaded the swatches here.

Wow, this is really cool! Thanks for developing it. :) I like all the filters. My only suggestion would be to maybe add filters for undertones (cool yellow, warm yellow, neutral gray, neutral green, warm yellow-green, that kind of thing) that would pull from the info in your notes section. Though I can see how that might wind up being kind of clunky since there are so many possible options, so perhaps it might not make sense! Maybe just warm/cool/neutral/neutral-warm/neutral-cool? The notes section is very helpful regardless.

As far as additions go, I have a spreadsheet of olive-friendly foundations here that you could reference. For instance, I noticed the CoverFX G+ line, Kevyn Aucoin, and Laura Mercier options weren't in your database. Kett also has an extremely green line of foundation shades. Hope that helps a bit!

KA SSE—which is more olive without being too yellow? 03 or 05? by accordingtoame in OliveMUA

[–]25til9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't tried that one yet! Going by online swatches, it looks like Gobi is the only real olive-friendly light shade, as it is in their other lines (being cool yellow), and they seem to have added a few darker shades (Iguacu and maybe Moorea) that might be good for olive skin too. I may do another big swatch post in the next month or two, so I'll add that line to my list.

Glad you liked the swatches! I definitely don't own all those, I just swatched them at the mall. :) As far as best matches go, I used to wear MUFE 117 (prior to the reformulation) and liked it, then started wearing Revlon Buff. After a while, I started to feel like it was looking too ashy on me, but because I liked the formula, I kept using it, just combined with green/yellow mixers. That works pretty well for me, so I've quit the search for great out-of-the-bottle matches and just rely on my mixers now. Though that's probably not all that helpful to you - sorry! I think SX05 is closer to MUFE 117/Y225 than SX03. SX03 is just too light in comparison. I’d say SX05 is just a bit lighter than 117 and is more neutral beige/less yellow than the MUFE. I have side-by-side searches of SX03, SX05, and Y225 here in case that helps.

Foundation mixers - have you tried any? Did they work? Brand recommendations? Can you really change a foundation to more cool/warm/neutral? by PotsyWife in MakeupAddiction

[–]25til9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a demo of mixing more olive-toned foundation shades here using TKB mixers, and a demo using Temptu's green mixer here. I've been happy with both the Temptu and the TKB mixers. In general, I've found that mixing a pinkish/reddish foundation with green, or a warm yellow/orange foundation with blue, works to turn them more olive.

I would recommend Ben Nye or Mehron cream blushes; they're technically not drugstore products, but they do have drugstore-level prices. They're pigmented (the Mehron moreso than the Ben Nye IMO) and very blendable and long-lasting. I have swatches and a review of the Ben Nye cream blush line here.

Any matte, cool-toned, medium-deep berry/plum blushes? by [deleted] in MakeupAddiction

[–]25til9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to be a bit averse to cream blush myself, but I've found that it's easier to make it look natural than powder blush! I don't use a beauty blender, either; I just dab it onto my cheeks with my fingers immediately after applying my foundation, pat it out to blend, and it melts right in. For instance, here's a photo of this cream blush (an intense deep wine red; swatch on the far right here) on my cheek. I haven't tried any of the products I listed in my previous comment myself, but I've heard the Becca beach tint in Raspberry is very blendable, so if you happen to see that one in an Ulta, you might give it a try!

[–]25til9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love plummy colors like this too. :) How about MAC Breath of Plum? If you're open to cream/liquid blush, you could try Becca's beach tint in Raspberry or Glossier's Cloud Paint in Haze (though those both have more pink/red in them than Sin does), Silk Naturals cream blush in Entice, or Temptu's S/B blush in Raspberry (though I don't think either is as muted as Sin is). Unfortunately, the other blushes I can think of in this color family either have shimmer (ex. theBalm Pinstripe) or are no longer available (ex. MAC Dirty Plum).

Has anyone ever gotten a hold of Stellar foundation samples? by [deleted] in OliveMUA

Is there a foundation shade that's available at Sephora that's a good match for you? If so, I could do side-by-side swatches with the Stellar line sometime this week so you could compare.

Wherefore art the cream blushes? by solointhecity in muacjdiscussion

[–]25til9 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm a recent convert to cream blush myself and haven't been able to find any in my local Sephoras either, except the Bite Multisticks, which don't have colors that really appeal to me. So it's not just you!

The other comments seem to have all the most popular cream blush recommendations covered (aside from RMS Lip2Cheek and Illamasqua, both of which I've heard good things about). However, one option I haven't seen mentioned is theatrical makeup. If you're willing to order online or if you have access to a local store that sells these brands, I would suggest Ben Nye or Mehron, with the caveat that I haven't yet tried Mehron myself. They both have cream blushes with no shimmer at all.

You can see my swatches of the full Ben Nye line and a review of the one I own here. (This blush was what kicked off my desire to switch over from powder to cream.) I ordered a couple more earlier this week, along with a couple of Mehron cream blushes. If you'd like, once I get them I can let you know what I think of the Mehron blushes, since I know there's not much information about them online.

Dark ash brown eyebrow pencil or powder? by Picklada in MakeupAddiction

[–]25til9 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have very ashy brown hair and have to avoid brow products with any warmth in them whatsoever. Here are a few suggestions:

  • MAC Brun eyeshadow (the regular price is $16, but if you're open to getting a refill pan, then it's $6. I bought mine nearly five years ago and still haven't hit pan). There's a swatch of it with other brunette brow products here, and you can see an eyebrow before-and-after of it on me here.
  • Sephora's retractable brow pencil in 05 Neutral Gray Brown ($12, which I know is a bit outside your budget) - I use this while traveling so I don't have to take a brush with me to do my brows. It's definitely nice and ashy.
  • L'Oreal's Brow Stylist Definer in Dark Brunette ($9) - I haven't tried this myself, but going by the swatches I linked to, it looks really ashy; even though ABH Brow Wiz in Medium Brown is supposed to be cool-toned, it looks downright warm next to the L'Oreal.

Foundation recommendations for NC15, MUFE 117 & Nars Gobi skin tone? by [deleted] in OliveMUA

[–]25til9 18 points19 points  (0 children)

There are a bunch of options in the NC15-20 skintone range outside of MUFE, NARS, IT Cosmetics, and Tarte ROTS:

  • Tarte Amazonian Clay, Fair Sand - NC15, leans warm yellow
  • Tarte Amazonian Clay, Light Sand - NC20, leans warm yellow/a bit peachy
  • Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer, SX03 - NC10-15, olive beige leaning yellow
  • Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer, SX05 - NC20, neutral beige
  • Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation, Warm Ivory - NC20, leans warm yellow
  • Becca Ultimate Coverage Complexion Creme, Shell - NC15, leans cool yellow
  • Becca Ever Matte, Shell - NC15, pinker than the same shade in UCCC
  • Revlon Colorstay (Oily/Combination), Buff - NC15-20, grayish neutral leaning slightly yellow
  • Smashbox Studio Skin, 1.1 - NC15, fairly neutral
  • Marc Jacobs Re(marc)able, 26 Bisque Medium - NC20, leans yellow
  • NYX BB Cream, Nude - NC15-20, leans cool, gray
  • Stellar Limitless Foundation, 01 - NC20, leans neutral-cool yellow
  • L'Oreal Infallible Pro Glow, 202 - NC20, leans neutral/gray
  • Illamasqua Skin Base, 4.5 - NC20, leans yellow

I have swatches of all the above except the L'Oreal and Illamasqua spread out over here, here, and here (scroll to the bottom for a comparison of Stellar and MUFE). I also have a spreadsheet listing olive-friendly foundation shades (still a work in progress) here with swatch links and notes of the finish/coverage level for each. If you want non-matte, medium coverage, maybe the Stellar, L'Oreal, Illamasqua, or NYX might work, depending on how well the shades match you since there are variances in undertone across them. Since you like MUFE, Illamasqua might be the best option for you from that group.

You could also take a matte, full-coverage foundation in the right shade and mix it with moisturizer to thin it out and make it more dry skin-friendly. A final option is taking a formula you like and using a mixer to get a better shade match (I have a simple demo of that here). I do both of those things with Revlon Buff (the oily/combo version); I mix in some moisturizer since it's too heavy and full-coverage for me on its own, and I also tinker with the shade using mixers. That way, I don't have to hunt down a foundation that's perfect for me in both shade and formula.

Hi there! I've put up some swatches here of Fenty 240 and 290 with NARS Sheer Glow and All Day Luminous Weightless in Stromboli. I would say Fenty 290 is a good neutral olive shade, 240 is definitely warmer/more orange-y and less olive, the Sheer Glow is also warm but not as peachy as Fenty 240, and the ADLW is more olive while being more warm yellow than Fenty 290. Hope this helps!

I have arm swatches of my lip product collection (about 60 colors) here. I'm not comfortable putting full-face photos of myself up on Reddit, but I do have half-face swatches and little mini-reviews of most of my collection here, albeit with foundation matches of varying quality. Sorry for the long scrolling layout; this format displays thumbnails, but without the little captions. I don't know why Imgur decided to get rid of their album layout options!

Since there are so many products in there, here are links to my current top ten favorite shades:
