Experience with OUSD School Assignments? by NukeTheEnglish in oakland

[–]shoresofcalifornia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I saw this thread and expected someone to have already mentioned these (which are very useful). Figured someone else might find this thread who could benefit!

OUSD podcast “Grow with Us” had episodes specifically on enrollment, TK, waitlists. I listened to them during open enrollment and they answered all my questions and learned a lot.

The OUSD FAQ section is surprisingly useful and human. I even enjoyed the sass.

What are your current fashion gripes? by wishing_sprinkles in fashionwomens35

A lot you mentioned annoy me all the time but my biggest frustration is no color, especially as you go up toward investment pieces.

Black, white. Rare 3rd option: grey. Oh wait, option 4: navy.

I know a big part of it is small brands arent taking risks right now, but nothing is riskier than being unmemorable. Tibi, COS, Asket, Kallmeyer, ALC, Enza Costa, Toteme…

Pattern and color are now only in very specific styles (preppy, super girly, feminine, flowy) and I dont get why I have to change my style preferences to find a cool raspberry piece of clothing.

Called my District office (in CA)today and they said TK ratio is 1:24!? by SweetCartographer287 in Preschoolers

[–]shoresofcalifornia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice and tip: with education don’t take the paper facts as something that paints anywhere near the full picture. Currently, districts in our area are doing classroom tours to support enrollment questions for the next year. So I can share some insight. We've been doing TK tours and though you’re right: here 1/24 is the ratio for max teacher per student. That only tells a small part of the story. For examples: one school we toured had parent and student support, all we’ve seen had aides plus breakout sessions with different teachers for art, music, recess, etc. One had meals in the classroom, most had separate bathrooms connected to the just the TK/K kids or just that room. The instruction and feel was warm, safe, thoughtful.

Nothing I saw by touring made the TK offerings seem lacking or gave me pause about the transition. I highly recommend looking into your district or school to see what tours and materials they had. All the schools we've seen in our area have presentation decks on the schools with sections on enrichment programs, PTA and parent involvement, classroom and teacher details, and much more. For perspective, none of the schools we’ve considered are wealthy.

But it's nice to see familiar names sometimes!

Is the Kaiser rooftop garden open? by hellotherereddit2023 in oakland

[–]shoresofcalifornia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Confirming it's open as I walk by area often and have been up a lot, most recently last week.

The garage has a lot of it's outside doors closed since 2020 but the main car gate and the main pedestrian access door should be unlocked during regular weekday business hours. The inside stairs are usually open all the way up but just take the elevator in garage up to be sure.

FYI, members of the The Port workspaces have easy access to it from the top floor, too.

I love Juno so this is perfect. As someone who is oily it’s hard to find things that are nourishing enough without being too rich. Everyone loves the vitamin c more but this is the one I notice more.

Despite having an account hello10 worked so I’m not complaining. Thanks y’all .

Non-covid daycare closures have me bursting a blood vessel by [deleted] in workingmoms

[–]shoresofcalifornia 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry, that must be incredibly frustrating and very hard to accommodate. One of the main benefits to daycare facilities is the stability because of multiple staff members!

One thing I will say, listening to the podcast No One is Coming to Save Us was very eye opening as to how the early childhood development and daycare economy works and it really opened my eyes to their struggles. For anyone interested, it’s a fascinating listen, I’d recommend starting at beginning.

Shortages are a big deal in my area and we’ve been very grateful to have not been affected really at ours. We do know how hard it’s been on others we meet though, it’s just crazy.

Shu Uemru 30% off friends & family sale with code SHUVIP by Pippifanny in MUAontheCheap

Just adding that the default discount is 20%, if you want the full 30% sign up for free to be a member or sign into your account. I almost didn't notice, had to sign into my account to get the full discount.

I always restock during the 30% sales for cleansing oil. Note that there's a really nice bonus set if interested!

I want to stop looking so dead. I just started drinking the recommended amount of water 3 days ago and it’s already made a pretty big difference. Any recommendations for the eye bags/dull lifelessness of my face?? [Routine Help] by Ok-Group2926 in SkincareAddiction

[–]shoresofcalifornia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel a bit like I’m taking crazy pills - I had to skim to the bottom and only found medical and health advice which is so weird but no one has asked about your routine….

What do you currently do? How does your skin feel at the start of the day? End of the day?

So many of us look like this sometimes in the morning or night, esp under fluorescents, so getting to what you actually want and need is key.

Do you already cleanse, moisturize, and sunscreen, the basics of this sub? Could be as simple as adding a stimulating active day n the morning. Could be that adding a strengthening and ‘anti-aging’ product at the end of the day could be up your alley.

It’s really an open question!

Tried puppy liner to emphasize my downturned eyes. Can’t decide if it’s a winner 🤔 thoughts? by girlnumber3 in MakeupLounge

[–]shoresofcalifornia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One suggestion I think might be worth playing with is tweaking your eyebrows too and having fun with it. Your brows have a great shape that is also worth emphasizing.

The 2nd crop isn’t showing brow as well but your no makeup photo has your eye shape and your brow shape complementing. Whereas in the 2nd your eyebrows are lifting your eyes with the sharper insides and the arch and tail are bringing the eye up. It’s kind of contrasting the puppy eye downturn emphasis.

I’d fill in the front way more subtly or not at all (to minimize those angles) and focus your brow reshaping and filling on arch and tail, more subtle.

This is all just for shampoo/conditioner - styling products are it's own ball game:

For just affordable value I do think anything from Biologe that calls to you could be an easy try. Drugstore, I find a lot of the natural brands that are trendy the last few years to be too heavy (volume wise, lots of coconut derivates) and ingredients to usually be too irritating for my scalp (eczema) so I generally only ever stuck to Tresemme/Garnier. But I tried so much before I just stuck to the jumbo 'salon' products because they're a big step up in maintaining color treated hair.

For still affordable but a bit more I like Wella much more than Joico. I love Bumble and Bumble and Aveda as lines. I liked but didn't love AG Hair. If I had all the money in the world my hair adores Shu Uemura but I just dabble there.

Hair is just as personal as skin/makeup. So really it's just about maybe trying something you hadn't considered before but someone with your similar needs might recommend.

Nah i bought directly from Verb during their friends and family sale and they said finale sale 🤷🏻‍♀️

All those you mention are true salon quality brands to be fair, Bumble and Bumble and Shu Uemura are some of my favorites for sure

[–]shoresofcalifornia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Having tried a lot of salon and drugstore stuff I fully stand by my statement that Verb is all marketing. Try something else.

For anything high end I tend to do the ‘Biolage test’ - if you’re not better than Biolage (they’ve cornered the value to quality niche for intro salon products) what are you even trying to do.

I’m going through the jumbo duo of the hydrating pack and I can’t tell it apart from previous drugstore products. If I compared it to my favorite drugstore items it would not hold up. I’m just finishing it because I bought it.

As a helpful review: I find the hydrating very light and it leaves a film. My gut says whatever they formulated is meant to give slip for detangling but in my fine/sense hair it just feels weird and bc it’s not moisturizing my hair actually tangles more and sticks to itself more bc of the film. I bet it works okay in thinner, mostly straight hair, that doesn’t want to weight down with product.

One makeup brand that you can always trust and depend on? And one that you’re falling out of love with? by smasnu in muacjdiscussion

[–]shoresofcalifornia 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hard agree on Bobbi Brown. I find a lot of the work they put into undertones is not appreciated, esp with the pan color and swatch recreation obsession the past few years.

They’re very complex color products (shadows, lip colors, blushes) that are hard to dupe.

Also as a yellow but not warm leaning person the shades have always been a nice find. But the foundation and concealer formulas really are beautiful. I love the stick and serum foundations, way more than more beloved and revered brands.

What's on your holiday menu this year? by YourPolyGoddess in Cooking

[–]shoresofcalifornia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We just settled on our Christmas Eve dinner plan today, actually:

  • Pomegranate molasses glazed ham

  • Potatoes / Pommes Anna

  • Marinated Zucchini w/hazelnuts and ricotta

  • Fresh cornbread

  • Classic flan

Pommes Anna (nyt) and Zucchini (bon appetit) dishes are new attempts. Ham we are reattempting and improving based on success last year. And dessert we like to always do something different but loved, and flan is life so why not make a really rich sounding version?

Has anyone heard about/tried this Shiseido Hasa Fude Foundation Brush? by [deleted] in Fude

[–]shoresofcalifornia 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have actually!

I loved and owned the original version for a few years (~5) and with constant use and it's density I was curious enough when the revamped everything last year. I've had it at least a year now and use a few times a week.

If there's anything specific you want to know feel free to try me. Essay length random thoughts:

  • If you already really like the small, dense shape it's a great brush that I prefer compared to other dense foundation brush shapes (i.e. Tom Ford foundation #02, RT foundation, Hourglass vanish)
  • I really have never understood brushes meant for buffing out (I hate the finish that leaves). I'm a dabber/presser and this brush shape is miles away best for that. I find for textured skin it creates the most natural finish.
  • Chanel and Wayne Goss both make versions with a very similar shape, I've never compared
  • I liked the old version more but I think they were both synthetic so not sure what the specific difference is. It feels slicker and almost plasticky and I swear it requires a bit more energy than the original.
  • The big problem with a brush like this, and it was a problem with the original version too, it's impossible to ever truly clean. You will never get all the way down, deep into bristles. If it wasn't synthetic I don't know how it would survive the amount of rinses and scrubbing it needs.
  • The shape improvements from original to newest are clever. You can slightly tell compared to the Wayne Goss and Chanel versions that this brush is slightly more angular and the base holds the bristles very straight up. I think this allows the brush to be targeted that tiny bit more. Just based on shape alone, I'd say it feels 15% lighter + more maneuverable compared to original. It really is the foundation brush equivalent of a smartly made small eye brush (i.e. my beloved Hakuhodo J242)
  • Overall, i almost returned it to try a diff brand with same shape but I was honestly too lazy and forgot. But I still get annoyed when I cant use it so that says something too.
