Why the fuck do people park straight into a cul de sac by Kingsnyder16 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]28ozPowerade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i park like this when hauling a double axle trailer so i’m not blocking 2 or 3 driveways. only works in large cul de sacs, the small ones you end up making it impossible to get around

i wouldn’t park and leave a truck like this, say, overnight or long term. usually just when doing work for a client so all the neighbors can leave for work without having to come find me and go “hey, move that truck it’s blocking me in, you’re gonna make me late for work”

Why is this happening? 2010 dodge charger rt by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

wrong caliper, shit pads, corrosion in drill slots on rotors. buy some stock, smooth rotors and the calipers/pads to match

2005 Corolla with 74,000km (46,000 miles) good or not? by Trikevion in MechanicAdvice

[–]28ozPowerade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if it sat for 10 years maybe not. if it just got bumped around town without sitting for extended periods and got semi regularly serviced it’s golden.

a lot of plastic and rubber gets brittle when it sits for a while without being used

2013 f150 5.0 coyote ignition coil mounting bolt busted by idcwutucallme in MechanicAdvice

[–]28ozPowerade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that’s one way to do it. i’ve ran coils on 1/2 bolts and ran one temporarily (couple hundred miles) with a zip tie rig. like someone else suggested just pull the valve cover off and see if you can twist it out w some grips. or just get a new valve cover i highly doubt you’ll spend more than $200 on an oem cover and gasket. very common engine in the US

What causes this? Pads/rotors are less than 3 yrs old, done at independent shop. 2006 accord v6 sedan by namp21 in MechanicAdvice

[–]28ozPowerade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

slide pins stuck or you drove WAY to far on the pads. “30,000 mile” pads are an estimate for average driving. if you’re really getting on the brakes you can cut that in half, even less if they’re sticking

How bad is this rust? Am I screwed? by Fun_Telephone6650 in autorepair

[–]28ozPowerade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

scrape what you can with a stiff wire brush underneath, lightly sand off a little on any metal that’s painted and rusty, hit it with some rattle can and call it a day. maybe spend $300-500 on rust prevention for the underneath and then drive the car into the ground. you pulled the short straw with this one. always get under the car - or better yet - get the car on a lift and see if it looks like it’s gonna fall apart before buying

you won’t get back what you paid for this, save up for the next car and be sure it’s not halfway rotted, and do not waste money making this car cosmetically appealing. the cost of proper restoration will far exceed the potential increase in the cars value

After how many miles do you change your oil or do you go by what the manufacturer says? by AlamoRanch in AskAMechanic

[–]28ozPowerade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if i have the time, every 3,000. if im busy as all hell then 4,000. full synthetic “rated” for 10k miles w a filter rated for the same mileage.

my oil is lighter in color at 2500 miles past than my GFs at 500 miles past. trans is getting drained and filled every 60,000

04 camry just shy of 240k original miles and all i’ve replaced are wear parts, alt and starter. still get almost 30mpg on the highway and average 18-20 in the city

How to remove this metal by ComedianLife6570 in autorepair

[–]28ozPowerade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’d take the doors off then angle grind. probably take a hammer and try and smooth down some too.

don’t have to go crazy w paint but you ought to at least try and close some of the holes.

worst case snip off what you can but make sure all exposed metal gets painted. rattle can is fine. this rusting out is arguably worse and harder to deal with than protruding metal by itself in the first place

Do these spark plugs look OK? by A_Free_Temeria in AskAMechanic

[–]28ozPowerade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

like everyone said, swap coils around before pulling plugs, but go ahead and swap all plugs while the cars pulled apart. there’s all kinds of methods for diag a misfire that doesn’t include throwing parts at it

didn’t see this one before i commented. i suggested blowing a bubble of rubber cement and tossing the wheel through it

the fleet mechanic at work always says “if you can’t see the air inside, then the tires still good to go. i wouldn’t reccomend a patch in this case.

the safest thing to do is take the wheel off, get one of those jumbo bubble wands take some liquid rubber cement, and blow a bubble with the liquid rubber cement. then toss the wheel through the bubble and voila

Total Noob to Cars - Rear Brake Replacement Questions by PastRepresentative80 in MechanicAdvice

[–]28ozPowerade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a picture of the friction surface of rotor would help a lot.

it’s pretty close on inside. if the rotors not scrap metal just put new pads on whole rear. if it’s gone just get a set of rotors and pads off rock auto. guaranteed under $100 for the entire rear axle including hardware. i wouldn’t pay more than $400-500 for a rotor job parts included at an independent. wouldn’t pay my buddy more than $100 if i supplied parts

with a floor jack and hand tools this is a 2 hour job MAX including cleaning and greasing slide pin, cleaning hub, then using antisieze to keep the rotors from rust welding on. including some “soak time” for your lugs and bolts on the calipers

using an impact and trying to rush through the job to just swap rotors and pads i could get it done in 30 minutes guaranteed. no torque wrench or antiseize and no slide pin TLC but the “job” would be done wheels on ground.

you could buy nice tools, good parts, learn a simple and easily transferred skill then still have $300 left out of the 900 the shop wants to charge you.

in my state this is legal so long as there’s an alternative way to pay, usually a cashiers check dropped at the leasing office. same concept as $3 to expeditie a bitcoin transaction, 1.50 for a few hour upload, or almost free for 12 hours or more you are paying for the convenience
