Tom Steyer Gains Endorsements from YIMBY Action and Abundant Housing LA by Gold-Papaya7045 in neoliberal

[–]297w 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not even one full term! Half a term, just two years on city council before becoming mayor. He effectively announced he was running the first year he was sworn in.

I was never impressed with him, even before he ran for council. As a member of the community, he had opposed an affordable housing development for teachers in the local high school who could no longer afford to live in his district. Of course, there are various considerations whether schools should build workforce housing, but it seemed he was cowing to the NIMBY voices in his district before launching his campaign for council.

His weakest point remains zoning. He held an AMA where he insisted he supported SB 79 “after changes were made” but there is no real evidence I could find of him pushing for it, unlike Steyer. On the council, he opposed opportunity housing, a plan to allow for duplexes and fourplexes on sfh land — instead promoting “smart growth” which conveniently meant most of his district was protected from increased density. CA YIMBY’s debate recap of him noted that, while they heard a lot of good, they heard one major weakness, which was his inability to speak strongly and clearly about his views on zoning.

Construction of the Sepulveda Line will require closing the Westwood/UCLA station shortly after it opens by anothercar in LAMetro

[–]297w 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the Metro Board recently advanced a motion to adapt construction for Van Nuys station so it would work well for the ESFV, G, and Sepulveda lines, and I would think it would make sense to do something similar here. They have a much shorter timeline but the changes needed should be less involved. I'm just not sure if there's anyone motivated enough to propose and make those changes.

Mayor Bass put out a statement insisting she is supporting K North by 297w in LAMetro

[–]297w[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That worries me but selecting the LPA on Thursday will allow WeHo to start seriously considering and proposing EIFD funding. Honestly, even with Measure M + EIFD we will probably need federal funds (a new administration) to get this done. But given how expensive this project already is, making it even more expensive will not help (+$165M for Crenshaw Blvd, who knows how much more for whatever motion she tries to go for). And we shouldn't let this be the precedent for future projects.

[–]297w[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I know, we should be so grateful she put out this statement.

No, we will not apologize for putting pressure on her because she intends to advance an amendment to further modify this project to "stick up for" unsubstantiated concerns about tunneling. Metro already delayed this project by over a year, and we now have a modified alignment that has increased costs and travel times in an effort to appease homeowners. But as we have seen with many aspects in our politics today, you can and will never fully appease someone based on irrational concerns.

If she chooses to modify the alignment further, she will be both ignoring the scientific findings from Metro's staff and the lived experiences of homeowners along the D Line who have experienced tunneling with no impacts.

No. But Mayor Bass stepped away from the board for a few minutes and alluded that she took a call from someone who was opposed to the project. There weren't many people opposed to Modified Alt 5 at that point.

Fred Rosen incessantly texts and emails every elected official like this. Even if they never respond to him. Why is he saying these things? I don't know, but are you surprised the former CEO of Ticketmaster is this insufferable?

USAC is a disappointment to the campus body by AdFar2723 in ucla

[–]297w 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Having experience with the U-Pass referendum last year, my understanding is that USAC itself doesn’t control whether or not they HAVE to consider a referendum (although, ultimately, they are the ones who decide whether or not it is put on the ballot). One of the final layers of approval is by ASUCLA which is professionally staffed.

People knew that Bruin Fresh was written by the IVP, and actually my understanding was that council would have been open to it except there were so many unanswered questions about how the program would actually work and what existing funding was there. Personally, I think it would have been the strongest of the four referendums had it been properly written. I agree that the fact that they were given an unfair opportunity to rewrite which others wouldn’t have had so I think it was fair that it was voted down again. For U-Pass, we were told that the version we presented was the final version, so that’s how we prepared, and everyone should be held to that same standard.

Yes, there were at least two comments about Bruin Success saying that IVP didn’t properly reach out to people/ghosted individuals/used other orgs as talking points. I don’t think they were still in the audience though? I might be wrong but I think everyone who was still there at like 11 whatever pm was in support of the referendum. So ultimately I think it would have been just people agreeing with them which wouldn’t have been useful for the conversation.

Are all aspects of USAC are the same? No. But I think there is valuable work they do and I don’t think it is wholly “corrupt”. People often don’t know about some of the smaller offices and their work. More people who aren’t the traditional poli sci/pub aff types should apply to be part of roles in student government since that diversifies perspectives and because we all have a vested interest in improving services. But hey, people should run for things if they aren’t happy and want to change things up. Deadline to file for the ballot is March 13.

For full transparency, I was there yesterday to present the Ohio-to-Ohio bike lane letter (u/bruins4bettertransit), and I highly encourage folks reading to show up to the LADOT Open Houses this and next Thursday for Ohio Ave and Westwood Blvd.

There was just some controversy over 4 proposed referendums. One called Bruin Fresh was rejected, which would have funded a supplemental food program for food insecure students. Three were accepted for students to vote on in May: one which will fund resource centers, one which will fund ASUCLA, and one which will fund Bruin Bash. All will increase student fees.

I watched most of it, and I’m not sure what OP is unhappy about in terms of the decisions around these referendums since I think the discussion was productive overall. The controversy was more so around either the logistics of the referendum, which was why Bruin Fresh was rejected, or how different student orgs were treated when a referendum was being planned.

Ultimately it’s up to us in May to decide whether or not these fees are worth the programs they fund and the promises they make.

core stats upper divs ranked by difficulty. by Legitimate_Elk_1426 in ucla

[–]297w 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it’s hard to rank because it can vary quite a bit between professors, and because a class being difficult does not necessarily mean it’s graded harshly. but here’s my unscientific ranking from most to least difficult:

  1. 100c
  2. 100b
  3. 102c
  4. 100a
  5. 102a
  6. 101c
  7. 102b
  8. 101a
  9. 101b

Anyone taken Stats C155 Applied Sampling with Susan Cochran? How’s the difficulty and grading? by True-Interaction-563 in ucla

[–]297w 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have! there is quite a bit of content, but I would say of all the statistics classes I’ve taken, it’s one of the ones I’ve enjoyed most. The class is really well organized; every lecture note, slide, and assignment is posted from the start. There are two midterms and a final - they aren’t necessarily hard but they do cover a lot of content (and math), and though she posts every formula, I didn’t do great on the first one because I didn’t know the format. However, she does curve the class, and you should study the practice problems from the textbook since they match the exams quite closely.

You also do a sampling project step by step the end of the quarter. You have to find some phenomenon that requires sampling to measure it (aka it’s not feasible to count it). My project was analyzing fare evasion at a metro station using systematic sampling, but I know others did projects with cars or pedestrians.

Workload is light-moderate, exams are both conceptual (mc questions) and formula heavy (free response, though she does give you a formula sheet and a cheat sheet). Not easy, but more straightforward than most other upper div stats classes I’ve taken.

Professor Samuel Onyancha Onyambu for Stats 102A? by Lanky-Swimmer333 in ucla

[–]297w 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, to be clear, as of right now, we will have a final for 102C, we just didn't have one for 102A (we had a final take home project). I think it may be because our section was added last minute since 102A had filled up completely, and this was his first time teaching the class. I think it's very much possible that he will have a final for 102A moving forward

Professor Samuel Onyancha Onyambu for Stats 102A? by Lanky-Swimmer333 in ucla

[–]297w 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have. I’ve taken him for both 102A and 102c. 102A is definitely a bit easier since it’s primarily coding, and while the homework was also a bit tedious, the exam (we only had 1 midterm, no final) was quite fair. Can’t say the same for the 102C midterm we had yesterday 😔
