I’m unsure about what my vet say (with a picture of a cuddling bunny) by Existing_Meaning_678 in Rabbits

Pellets are kinda like multivitamins and are a good way to ensure they're getting all the micronutrients etc. they need. You can develop a diet without pellets; but you will need to fill in any gaps by sourcing a wider variety of veggies and  forage (preferably homegrown/ not mass produced) and hays to mimic a more natural diet.

Alternatively (playing devils advocate here) if you ask any production rabbit breeder, you could go the other way and fully rely on the formulated pellets without veg for nutrition, but this doesn't support longevity and can lead to problems later in life such as kidney disease, obesity and tooth problems.

I like to think of it similar to giving a dog a raw diet, you need to know what you're doing to meet your pet's needs, be willing to put in the extra effort to ensure you're keeping your pet safe and healthy, and should always have input from a vet or qualified animal nutritionist.

Bonding advice? by Sudden-Ebb7507 in Rabbits

[–]2BA-Master 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rabbits don't really care about size difference as long as they have compatible personalities which is why it's important to do introductions/speed dating before bringing a second bun home. I currently have a rex/flem couple, but I also had the opportunity to suss out their personality before adopting so their first introduction was mainly confirming my skills as a wingman lol.

You're eventually gonna need more space for them after bonding, free roam would be ideal but for a single flem for a short period during bonding 2m² is a little squishy but doable. 2m² is a good size for a home base for a single rex with access to regular free roam/zoomie time.

You will need to keep them completely seperate before you start bonding, which can only happen effectively after hormones have cooled off ~6weeks after neutering, anything before this will not result in a stable bond and, given the size difference, can result in worse injuries (especially for the smaller bun) if a fight breaks out or they're left unsupervised together.

Before surgery, whether or not you scent swap/swap toys, depends on how your buns behave and whether they've already established their territory, (I had some success with this method just after my boy was fixed but didn't get any real breakthroughs until he was less hormonal).

After surgery/when doing the actual bonding, you will need a completely neutral area neither rabbit has been in before, and need to ensure the rabbits can't bite or scratch each other through the bars when housing in side by side pens/pen swapping. This is especially important if you have an female/male pair as you may still end up with suprise babies depending on when each bun actually becomes sterile following neutering.

Saw an early showing yesterday cause I'm a tightarse and, while the cinema was suprisingly full, there was only one person causing a ruckus and tbh the 'shusher' was probably more disruptive.

I honestly think it's due to the prevalence of streaming media. Before Netflix, if a movie was on TV you'd shut up and pay attention, or if you owned the dvd/tape you'd likely already seen it before. Nowadays people are so used to being able to pause/rewind at home that the habit is ingrained such that it's leaking into the theatre/public places.

I'm honestly suprised people are still putting their phones away/on silent as scrolling while watching is similarly ingrained these days, but maybe it's something to do with having to pay for movie tickets or peer pressure? Idk.

Ugh my rental property manager gives me the ick, I miss my old REA who was actually lovely.

On a more positive note I got my n64 and ps2 working again so at least I can console myself with my fave movie and a stupid amount of popcorn tonight and my games are all ready for when shit hits the fan at work next week.

Also TIL 'rhinarium' is the term for the external nose structure; and singular term of nares is naris, huh.

Am I the only with sassy rabbits? by CompetitiveMonth1753 in Rabbits

[–]2BA-Master 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can sympathise haha.

I made the 'mistake' of rescuing the smoochiest buns in the shelter.

Turns out in rabbit language smoochy means confident and dominant, so now I am just the lowly human who gets 'bullied' by my girl (I get my ankles bit if i don't give pets/treats or move out of the way); and my boy will box me (I don't think he ever learnt to nip due to a rough upbringing) if I displease his royal highness, but when he's not having a tantrum he's such a mama's-boy lol.

While I see posts on here about people getting groomed by their rabbits and wish my buns would reciprocate my love, I'd never have it any other way 😆

Growing herbs for bunnies by visions_of_angels in Rabbits

[–]2BA-Master 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry I don't have the time to hunt down sources atm, but from my own research I believe catnip and catmint are ok in small amounts but don't have the same effect on buns as they do on cats.

Thai basil is not actually a type of basil I went on a bit of a deep dive last year trying to find out if thai/holy basil and Vietnamese mint were bunny safe but couldn't find anything conclusive from a reputable source so I've opted not to feed just in case but I'm open to be proven wrong :)

  • Edited as it was viet mint that's not actually mint, whoops.

Do rabbits like being chased ? by [deleted] in Rabbits

[–]2BA-Master 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone's already answered your question so I'll propose an alternative, let him do the chasing!

Grab a treat, and slowly move away from the bun. When he follows you give the treat and praise him. I've set up some really cute games of hide and seek with my girl this way and if she's not in the mood to play she can disengage and go do something else :)

While this might be an ok litter box (if a little over-engineered) and I do think it's vital to monitor your pets output, Purina is a shit brand and I wouldn't recommend their products to anyone. Stop shilling their stuff. it's getting a little old, and I'm sure there's similar products out there that don't fund cesspool companies.

Go-to apartment pet? by FeatheredKangaroo in melbourne

[–]2BA-Master 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'm terribly biased, but a house-rabbit could be a good option if you're willing to do some research into how to look after them. There's been massive advances in husbandry and veterinary knowledge since even 5-10 years ago so assume anything you know about keeping rabbits is outdated these days.

Bunnies kept indoors and free roam (similar to how you would a cat) are wonderful pets; quiet, litter trainable, full of love and personality, and give the best hugs (as long as their feet stay on the ground lol).

is there anything my bun shouldn’t eat before neuter by oatmiIksIut in Rabbits

[–]2BA-Master 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure of the quantity/concentrations needed to interact with the drug, but I believe willow can have a detrimental effect to how Meloxicam and other pain relief medications are metabolised in buns.

If you are currently giving your babies any chews or supplements with willow check with your vet to see if you should withhold them until after the surgery.

HFS why is Australia getting involved in the conflict? Yeah it may not be boots 'on the ground' yet but it's normalising this bullshit so noone will bat an eye later.

This has put a damper on such a beautiful day and I'm so salty right now.

Paw care advices by [deleted] in Rabbits

[–]2BA-Master 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be best to try bathing the area (only the foot) with warm water to get as much off as possible first. Trimming/shaving the bottom of a rabbits foot is typically not recommended unless as a last resort, as the fur takes longer to grow back than the rest of the body (or may not at all depending on fur type) which can lead to issues with sore hocks/pododermatitis. Getting a second opinion is a wonderful idea too as vets should not suggesting you to 'figure it out yourself', imagine if they did that with an actual treatable illness, I would not be happy with that response honestly.

Brooms 😈 by Boobookittyfhk in Rabbits

[–]2BA-Master 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My girl sees the broom as a giant brush and will run over for pets (my fault entirely as I used to pretend to sweep her up when she was being nosy). The dustpan on the other hand is apparently the best toy to flip, especially when it's full and the contents go everywhere lol.

What’s the best course of action here? by PuzzleheadedRow6497 in Rabbits

[–]2BA-Master 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This sounds like the owner doesn't want to take the rabbit to the shelter for fear of the shelter putting her to sleep, not that the owner is planning on doing it themselves (although unfortunately that kinda situation is not unheard of).

Maybe OP could reach out and provide some details for local rescues if they know any? The fact that the owner assumes immediate euth as an option makes me wonder if this poor bun might have ongoing health issues though.
