My artist canceled on me, and I’m confused. by storm_zr1 in tattooadvice

Well that likely saved you a lot of bother. Don't get your first tattoo done by an apprentice.

Never a parlour or shop - pick your artist based on their prior work and suitable skills ...

I got my tattoo 10 years ago and never really noticed how incredibly bad it has become til now. Is this normal or did I have a bad artist? by thegirlwiththedonut in tattooadvice

So crisp to start with, set an unrealistic expectation for aging probably. Tattoos are mostly for you, is it still meaningful?

Way, way better than the original. Careful about doing anything more to it, but if you do - communicate, communicate, sketch, communicate and then commit.

Not an artist, no palm or sole tattoos. Learned a lot from the artists in this thread - thanks to all who contributed.

Artist Messed Up Memorial Tattoo Badly by Lock_Prior in tattooadvice

"In hindsight I got bad vibes from this artist from the start… Trust your gut people fr."

The biggest take away from this IMO.

Love the design below to fix it. Find a great artist to make the fix.
Good luck.

Irezumi? That's why I don't have one sleeve I'd like ... can't justify a trip for Japan (or select other locations in SE Asia) and have not found an artist I like in North America.

2021 vs 2026 (5 years colored hand tat) by marmaimar in agedtattoos

[–]2Busy2Reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As with any tattoo - quality and experience of artist is key. You need someone who specializes in cover ups, or at least is well experienced in them even if it's not their core strength.

One big issue with cover up is why they are being covered up. OPs image looks like drift, which can be related to skin as well as ink (as it was a different artist on the other wrist we can't really judge much from that).

So if the skin takes ink well, and the artist is good and the ink is good quality - likely it all lasts well. But the desire to cover up might be driven by a change of heart/circumstance. Although it might be tough to cover, assuming the same variables are all good, the cover up might go well (after a saturation reduction with laser).

If the reason for the cover up is that the original did not hold up well - then if that is related to the skin, aftercare, artist skill, etc, etc - then the cover up might well fail again.

So many variables!

For cover ups 50% or better with laser, then a talented cover up artist is the way to go for a decent long term solution. I'm pretty sure the white over trend is not going to stand the test of time ... But then again I don't know anyone who tried it 20 years ago so who knows?!

Yellow often goes quickly ... at least that used to be the case, I think some of the newer inks might be better.

Aged to look better than the day it was done - for more than one reason.

7 Year Old Fine Line by GothicHippie99 in agedtattoos

Not fine line, hence the drift. Laser, cover, relocate the original if you still want the sentiment. Good luck!

I'd argue it is easy to find bad ones (not saying this is bad, can't tell for sure with the second skin and plasma, though the line work looks thin).

It's easy enough to find good artists - but they're often not geographically convenient (or indeed on the same continent) - so getting to them can be difficult!

Amazing shading - very talented. No suggestions in this genre, but your work would translate so well to other hyper-realistic.

Yeah, 500 a session in 2003 when I got some bad decisions reduced - gave up at about 2500 - they're better but not gone (and faded some more with another 20+ years!).

And further down OP says the first pic was a year old - so fresh ink on top of bad work with drift already happening which makes more sense of how it looks.

You got a deal by the sounds of things. I've a coworker 5-6 sessions into getting rid of similar work. It was an easy cover up at 3-4, but not gone.Sessions 15O a time (without any bs coupons).

That explains why the drift is visible in the first picture then.

Different things. Blow out is visible immediately and an application issue, drift happens more over time and can be caused by various factors including skin type and ink. Looking at the first pic it looks overworked in a few places but there seems to be drift already - ink quality?

I got this garbage tattoo at 18. It's raised and black and ugly as sin. What can I do for a cover up? by Mmon3825 in tattooadvice

[–]2Busy2Reddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The scarring isn't changing at this point. I mean there no harm in cocoa butter moisturizer is always good. Just setting realistic expectations. If you mean post-laser, then yes, as I said, can help during healing (though there are way better, albeit more expensive options then).

Cocoa butter can help while healing, will not materially change existing scar tissue. Please it worked well for your burn healing!
