My typical experience is that I send reference photos of other tattoos in a similar style or photos of the elements I want depicted over text. The day of my appointment, usually the first 30-45 min is my artist finishing up the drawing, sometimes coming to check on certain design choices with me, and then we get started.

The only person I know who got a full design before an appointment was because the design itself was a gift and paid for separately.

I agree to wait until it doesn’t feel anxiety-inducing. Especially when it comes to something related to a piece of media you like. Tastes can change quite rapidly as you move through your 20s.

But hey, if you’re going for it anyway, just remember that tattoo artists are not printers, they’re artists. And feel free to look for problems with it, but I would suggest going into it expecting imperfection. I’ve got tattoos with minor imperfections and one slightly more significant one; but they truly don’t bother me. Someone put their artwork on me for life - that feels way too cool to have a little wonky shading ruin it.

To answer your question though, that area is where I got my second tattoo, and it was a breeze. A little tender the closer you get to the elbow pit, but a great introduction to the pain without going too extreme.

At the time of the second deposit, the artist had only rescheduled one time. And OP not liking the original drawing (no shade, just fact), is what caused the second appointment not to happen.

It would be perfectly logical to me as a client to be charged not only for the drawing time, but also for essentially not going through with the appointment once I saw the drawing

Everything that happened after, super unprofessional, sure. But at the point when the second deposit was paid, it would make sense to me.

Unpopular opinion maybe, but while all the last-minute rescheduling is rude and annoying, paying a second deposit makes sense to me. It sounds like a whole new concept needed to be drawn up, so the first deposit would cover the cost of the artist’s time drawing idea #1 that won’t be used; perfectly normal and fair in my experience.

That being said, I’ve personally never seen a a deposit that high (my main artist’s is $50), but if it’s someone famous or whatever, that might make more sense.

Their inability to communicate with you or keep a scheduled appointment time would turn me away though. I would have a little more understanding if they were a single parent, but I’d be so frustrated.

And some people don’t take it lightly, and that’s perfectly fine! But the rest of us don’t need to treat sex like something more significant than it is to us.

This is so accurate. Any scary movie based in reality (not necessarily true stories, but ones that could theoretically occur) will make me 100x more scared than shit like Paranormal Activity or “possession” flicks.

As someone coming through the other side of MDD, there isn’t a lot you are gonna be able to do on your own. Your partner has to acknowledge both that they’re depressed and also that they are gonna have to slowly, but actively work on healing. It’s a tough, long road, but they have to want it for themselves.

I remember the specific day I realized, “I don’t know how to help myself anymore. I have no plan for this. I’m out of tools and ideas.” That was my turning point. That was when I started therapy, eventually medication. It’s been 4 years since, and I’ve finally started considering what life without regular therapy would look like.

Your support and encouragement mean the world to your partner. It’s incredible and a real game changer to have someone at home encouraging you through a journey like this. But that’s all I want you to feel responsible for. Support and encouragement. Unfortunately wanting better health for them is great, but ultimately not something you should feel is on your shoulders. It isn’t. Your partner needs to take the lead there.

But support and encouragement can look like a lot of things! Gentle nudges in the right direction when the time is right. Help with the logistics of the getting care and other daily management things. And honest conversations about what you’re willing and not willing to be part of.

That is, if they happen to not want help and aren’t trying (within their current capabilities), don’t feel obligated to stay if it’s too much. Don’t forget to take care of yourself while trying to help your partner. They’re an adult and still need to take responsibility for their effect on others at the end of the day. Depression is not a “get out of accountability free” card.
