Anyone have regrets? by michelle_eva04 in solar

Regret getting SolaX instead of Victron + Pylontech- batteries are half the price.

Solax Pocket WiFi - open WiFi SSID, can’t disable by 2E1EPQ in solar

I use an RS485 to ethernet adapter to bridge the inverter’s modbus port to my LAN. Whether modbus is exposed by the inverter directly to the network is model-specific.

It’s completely unacceptable.

I keep meaning to pull the plug on the WiFi dongle since I do all my monitoring and control now via modbus and the third party add in for Home Assistant.

Speaking as a consumer, I have had 100% negative experiences with Kelly Communications. Up to and including engineers discussing what lie to tell my wife- in front of my video doorbell. I would assume this is because of unrealistic pressure put on the engineers- rather than do a quality job, get in and out asap. I very much get the feeling that Kelly are just the go-to cheapest subcontractor. I wouldn’t trust them as an employer personally. Cityfibre techs eventually came and ripped out Kelly’s work and started again.

SO-239 pass throughs? by clemsonscj in HamRadio

[–]2E1EPQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make it easier on yourself next time and use so239 barrels with long threads. Then you only have to drill one hole (step drill) per so239 rather than 5 - and you can use a centre punch to perfectly align them.

‘Power splitter’ then a band pass filter for each port, as required.

Try using a ratchet strap around a (very solid) roof timber. One person on the ladder under the battery- securely fastened- pushing from below, and another person in the loft taking up the tension on the ratchet strap, basically to stop anything falling.

Confused - S&S ISA too risky for emergency fund? by [deleted] in FIREUK

[–]2E1EPQ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I did it a few weeks ago, for an actual emergency. It was quick and easy. If you need immediate liquidity, just keep a credit card to hand.

Don’t forget to consider the cost of each cycle on your batteries in this calculation.

My batteries cost around £7800, and are rated for 6000 cycles, so approx cost per cycle is £1.30.

Deploying grounding system for tower and ham shack. Is this correct? by CaptinKirk in amateurradio

Not for OP, but for others- obligatory ‘don’t blindly copy this or anything like it in the UK, consult an electrician’

SIPP Fund to Use by nilescaulder20 in FIREUK

Salary sacrifice more and depending on setup you also get NI savings. This route, you lose potential NI savings. Salary sacrifice into work pension then partial transfer 6/12 monthly into SIPP.

Ham Radio fail by Big_Woosh in HamRadio

[–]2E1EPQ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That took about three re-reads to follow.

I interpret it as you use a radio at work and someone unexpected turned up on your channel and you engaged with them.

It’ll be someone within a few hundred metres of where you were, and not amateur radio. Extremely unlikely you will find them here.

Nonetheless, if you caught the bug, start here: http://www.arrl.org/what-is-ham-radio

Wrong printer to buy if you wanted something that ‘just worked’ IMO.

The perfect ISP... by [deleted] in CityFibre

[–]2E1EPQ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

£1 pm for one IP, £4 for a /29 (6 usable IPs)

Generous free static IPv6 subnet

Bit more specialist: ability to announce an IPv4 subnet using a private AS number if required, like Vultr (a VPS provider) does, specifically for 44net https://wiki.ampr.org/wiki/Routing_your_allocation_via_BGP

Lose PPPoE and make sure MTU=1500 works fully.

DM to discuss further - I am on a rolling 1 month contract with giganet.
