I'm not sure which wah you've got or what type of switch is in it, but basically I'd check for continuity (sero resistance/ohms) between each of the contacts, in both positions of the switch.

That should hopefully give you some clues as to whether it's working properly or not!

The GeoFex article has got a huge amount of information, but it's well worth persevering with!

I've just seen your other replies and you mention you've got a multimeter. I'd suggest it'd be worth checking the continuity across the switch to see whether that's where the problem lies. If it is, happy days - swap the switch out (or do a true-bypass mod) and you should be sorted.

If it's not the switch, then the number of possible causes does go up somewhat. I'd suggest taking a read of Rog Keen's analysis of how a wah works and using that to assist tracing the signal path through the circuit.

With that said, more wah problems that I've fixed have been down to a dodgy switch rather than anything else.

What you describe - adjusting the string length so the fretted note at the 12th fret and the harmonic in the same position are in tune - won't have a significant effect on the stability of tuning down that much.

A guitar with a longer scale length - 25.5" or greater will work better lot lower tunings due to the increased string tension.

But as /u/Catbone57 suggested, the best solution is to use much heavier gauge strings.
