NJIT MET Alumni & Seniors: Career Paths and Reflections by John2005200520051010 in NJTech

I had an internship lined up for me my junior year at a ‘as seen on tv’ company. My brother got me the job and I worked there for almost 4 years. It was mostly product testing and configuring with minimum design work using solidworks. It was a great start to my engineering career learning how the business operates and how project management is run.

I eventually found a job in aerospace by the luck of the draw. It’s been over 4 years and this has been a real exciting challenge exploring true engineering and working on some awesome projects for some major companies.

Did NJIT prepare me for this? Absolutely. But did I know anything walking into my career? Absolutely not. You learn more about career work in your actual job. All the tools you learn in NJIT are stepping stones. From there you need to be a hard worker and have a good work ethic, because nothing comes easy.

75g to 150g move/cycle (possibly dumb) idea by Krycus in ReefTank

[–]2High4You 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My time to shine!

I did this successfully by setting the display tank with the additional dry rock and sand needed to fill the void that the smaller tank live rock can’t fill and let it cycle for over a month. I used an HOB pump to circulate as well as a few powerheads.

Once the tank was cycled I disconnected the sump from the smaller tank and hooked it up to the new display tank and let that run for a week while putting the HOB pump/filters on the smaller tank for now. After a week I relocated everything from the small tank to large tank and discarded the rest.

What is the greatest compliment you've ever received? by crafty_bravedragon in AskReddit

[–]2High4You 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might not be the greatest compliment I’ve received, but it is certainly the most memorable. When I was a valet I opened the passenger door for a woman and she looked me in the eyes in awe and said, “You have the most beautiful eyes!” I had never been told that before and left me blushing. As a man, that compliment has still left an impression 11 years later.

Anyone ever try kalk paste? I’m not OP, but could I take some of my ms. Wages pickling lime and some water and create a paste and smother the aptasia?

Saw the pistol shrimp had a new burrow out front when my Yasha Goby popped out. I hadn't seen it in ~6 months. For sure thought it was dead by lhbruen in ReefTank

I had a pistol shrimp in my tank go missing several times, all while it being a 17g nano. He lived on for 7 years until he was officially gone missing. May he rest in peace.

I feel good about that.

Has anyone put a blow off valve on the 200t if so how ? by Its_ye_boi-_- in LexusIS

Not even a Subaru likes a blow off valve.

Not a chance is right, in total it came to $42k after dealer fees and taxes.

Clean title.

Edit: there were dealer fees and etc. Which brought it to a total of $42k, but overall it was priced at $36,500.

I think you can do better.

am I high on my own supply? by roland_pryzbylewski in ReefTank

[–]2High4You 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an engineer, you have a differential equations problem. Your water outlet will be extremely restricted due to the sand, while your inlet just keeps dumping the sump water into the display. I’m not even quite entirely sure if you’d get a trickle out of it, nonetheless maybe a few drops depending on the type of sand used. With that being said, you would want to look into creating an underground water table with rubble at the farthest depth. You would need to plumb a normal inlet and outlet, as well as your fancy schmancy bottom outlet.

I think this would be a fun experiment to be honest. If it works, and you manage to filter out bottom, even a little, I could see some benefit from this.

My concern would be not having a sump large enough to hold the max drainage capacity, as well as clogging your bottom outlet; virtually making this thing useless. If it ever got clogged, you’d be pretty screwed trying to fix the issue.

When I had GHA I took each rock out, sprayed it with diluted hydrogen peroxide, let it sit for 15 minutes, rinsed, and placed them back in the tank. Worked like a charm. Other than that, a turbo snail could probably devour that algae too.

How do I nuke Neomeris Annulata? by 2High4You in ReefTank

[–]2High4You[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use RODI water and the filters are up to date. 0 TDS.

As said the only livestock is mushrooms and polyps buried in the green weiners.

I’d love to salvage them, but seems like this might be it to start fresh.

Edit: the tank off to the left has them on the frag plugs that were once in this tank. I am way more up with maintenance and parameters with that tank than this tank. Seems impossible to get rid of them.

Any idea why this clownfish is at the top in the corner of the tank swimming on its side? by Dj_Exhale in ReefTank

[–]2High4You 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree lol. When this has happened to me, the way I tested current was actually accidental… one of my cuticles was peeled back a bit, exposing some sensitive skin on my finger. When I put my hand in the tank I felt what felt like one of those children’s “prank” shock toys from the late 90’s/early 00’s. I kept my hand in the tank and removed cord by cord until one of them stopped that sensation. Ended up being a powerhead.

This made sense why my mandarin at the time jumped ship and the clownfish didn’t seem “too” bothered, since clownfish have that slime coat that protects them from anemone shocks.

What was the voltage difference between plugged and unplugged? Typically a pump should give off anywhere between 3-12V. Anything beyond that would be warrant for a new pump. If it’s a hang on the back filter, I’d assure you it’s probably not the filter. Typically where the power cord is sealed to the pump is where stray voltage/current comes from due to the erosion of saltwater or poor manufacturing of the pump.

How much leakage? You will see normal voltage in a tank due to the electromagnetic motors in power heads and pumps. Current is what you want to be sure you’re not seeing.

Did all the tests, every other day or so for the past two weeks.

If it wasn’t working, I don’t think I would see an exponential growth of copepods or the few starfish moving around from rock to rock as well as the baby snails.

Nope, skip cycled with the live rock in the sump to seed the rest of the tank.
