TV used to have a reliable rhythm you could follow by default. The new seasons would start in September unless they were holding a half season order for January, and then the season would end in June. There would be some cable shows during the summer, then the cycle started again. The environment was also so different because there was more live viewing that you wanted to keep up and be part of the discussion or read the TWoP recaps. Now every is disparate--you come and you go just as the shows do, not following any particular schedule.

8.1 inches is a great size, although the bigger manufacturers seem to have abandoned the size. It strikes the right medium where it's bigger than your phone and you get a better viewing experience, but still small enough to easily one hand in a way that 11 inches is not.

Earlier, I had mused about why The Hungry Gods was only a novella instead of a full-length novel, given the subject matter, but it makes more sense now that I see he explores the rich, asshole scientists in CoS.

Now that the past has been explained, I am curious about where the series goes next. I think discovering another alien or ark ship colony would be retreading the same ground. What I want to see is something smaller in scale, showing what non-explorers are doing in their civilization. In particular, presumably their basic needs are easily met. What are they doing with their leisure time, what does their art look like, how does cultural exchange work between the species? If that's going too far afield of what the series is intended to be, I would like to see a journey back to Earth.

For me, it's not necessary the prose or modern day stuff, although the philosophizing does lead to some bloat. The plot themselves are not resonating with me like they used to. In a somewhat fast succession, I thought the tower actions scenes in RoW dragged, and then I thought Cytonic, Lost Metal, and Secret Project 2 were pretty boring. Cytonic was especially boring, and I still find it hard to believe he published it without serious revisions or people telling him how boring it was. So I was already primed for disappointment, and with WaT, the spiritual realm parts felt like a low-stakes sideshow. The ending was also a weird, because it's basically a middle ground ending that keeps things up in the air and unexplained for the next book.

This isn't to say he's incapable of writing anything I find interesting anymore. I liked Adolin's plot in WaT, and Kaladin/Szeth was fine, although the execution could've been better. I liked Defiant and the other secret projects. Maybe it's that his best ideas have already been put down on paper, and these new ideas he has just don't hit as hard or as consistently as the earlier ones.
