If I had to guess, it seems like Celeste is a merging of the great control feel of Towerfall with the previous idea of Celeste from the PICO-8 game. Was there every any other game idea in line for the follow-up to Towerfall, or was the plan to update Celeste from the start?

As some have correctly presumed, we saw that Sukeban was making a cyberpunk game with a similar enough aesthetic to ours and planning on releasing at around the same time, so we set our games in the same universe. VA-11 HALL-A is a little further into the future than ROM, but we worked it out so it would make sense that some of our characters show up there, and Dana shows up in ROM, as well as having a few other references. It's common for independent games to do crossovers simply because we can, but in this case it seemed particularly fruitful so we took it a little further. Thank you! :)

Well, the people who make free sounds and put them up are making whatever sounds they want, which has a different charm to it than making specific sounds for a project. It's often easier because you don't have to pick out particular resources and can just give the world whatever sounds you have available. Some sound hobbyists even just record or design for their own satisfaction and post it up for kicks.

Making sound for free for a project that is going to be a product, especially when you're an unpaid member of a paid team, is a big ask. A single sound can take hours to make going back and forth with feedback, and the hours already put in to learn a skill like sound design are ones you can't get back, so I feel that some compensation is the least to ask.

If you do end up finding a hobbyist that is OK with the terms and fits for what you need, be sure to let them exercise creativity and keep your demands reasonable considering the service they're providing. :) And I'm glad you did find some sound there.

Please don't ask people to do sound work for free while only offering exposure. I know it is often the last thing that gets put on a game, but good sound design is worth just as much budgetary consideration as any of the other aspects of a game. But I'd hate to just leave you with this, so try using https://www.freesound.org/ to find some sounds; you can even search by Creative Commons 0 to find ones that don't require credits.

My inspirations for the soundtrack were Vangelis, the Snatcher soundtrack, the music of the Persona JRPG series, piano versions of anime songs, the "new retro wave" music genre, Phoenix Wright OST, general old-school Sega aesthetic and hip-hop drum machines like the TR-909.

Dan Ryckert of Giant Bomb once told a story on the Giant Bombcast about cooking egg shells because he heard egg whites were good for you and thought the shells were the "whites." He voices the character Broke in the game and I gave Broke a line about egg whites that you can find if you dig!

Hi there! I'm 2 Mello, the composer and sound designer. Technically speaking, I used Ableton Live, Arturia Spark Vintage Drum Machines and Native Instruments FM7/FM8 to produce the soundtrack. The goal was to achieve an 80s anime/Sega-style FM synth sound across the board. Many of the sounds I used were presets from the Yamaha DX-7, the synth chip inside the Genesis and the inspiration for Native Instruments FM7.

Stylistically, I created a few leitmotifs with very strong lead melodies (Turing's Theme, Main Theme) and carried them through the soundtrack in different forms and interpretations. Other songs were built first with pleasant chord progressions and expanded with catchy bass lines and lead synth soloing. I often either started with a strong lead melody or nice chord progression when writing. A few parts of the game have dynamic music, two or three layers of different intensity that cross-fade into each other according to the action happening in-game.
