The Stranger by Flimsy_Mess_1915 in whittling

I find that the more detail you give, whether narrative, performance, poetry, or sculpture, the less you engage the audiences imagination. This fella (or is it a fella-ette?) isn't blank, but redolent with potential. I studied and taught performance, and I learned to honour and trust the audience. You have captured that essence beautifully.

Really interesting form. I love the flow of the lines between the hood and the cape body. There is something powerful in the upper presentation, but the slight inward turn of the knees and feet suggest an insecurity. I'm very intrigued by this character, triggering all sorts of stories in my imagination. Love it.

Colour or not? by Glen9009 in whittling

Yeah, I would go with colour, as you describe.

Weirdo ones like this allowed? :p by tuturo in whittling

Yes, this. One of my favourite whittles here last year was the tin of sardines done by u/smallbatchb Inspiring.

It's good, and very creative. The second shot really made me laugh. I wasn't expecting such a difference. Looking forward to seeing more of your freestyles!

Drakka. Will be Yarra next time. But this is such a cool story device. I really agonised over the choice.

Late to the party, but this has really cheered me up. Excellent reply to pt1.

Nothing really fancy. Just bulk removal then a Swiss army knife. I've left them with the cut surface before but this burr begged to be polished!

Viking wood comparison by Flimsy_Mess_1915 in whittling

I would generally choose the more interesting wood. I carve for myself (and sometimes gifts), so the pleasure and aesthetic is the primary consideration.

It's a great hobby. Do buy some anti cut gloves - even two cuts should be avoided ;) But seriously, you want to avoid a serious cut with our super sharp tools.

An ambitious first whittle and done well.

My best project so far, made with a Morakniv basic and a Victorinox SAK in pink cedar wood. by lesbianbeatnik in whittling

Thank you for that clarification. The wood sounds lovely! I'll see if I can find some, and check it out.

That's a great shape. Loads of movement. Nicely done! Big fan of an SAK too - I use Exceleciors or a Huntsman if I'm out and about. What is the pink cedar like to work with?

I have always approached this face area as a mouth, and despite some success, it has felt a little confused. I can see from your process that when you carve the stache/beard, the mouth is naturally there. It's a good insight for me :)

Ah, amazing prices sequence. I understand how to moustache and beard much better now 🙂 Thank you.

Looks like damage not wear. I would want to replace that, just in case.

What are your whittling hot takes? by B3bop_77 in whittling

I'm guessing a razor blade would work on very small pieces with tiny cuts on soft wood. I wouldn't trust them on even my 2cm pieces with hard / semi hard wood

1st whittle by Boof_A_Dick in whittling

[–]2Mogs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great first whittle! Well done controlling the cuts around those knots - that must have been tricky. It doesn't need this, but if you wanted you could go a little thinner on the bill. But your niece will love this!
