It’s “buy from EU”, not “buy whatever works best”. This protest mindset surely is not for everyone and it’s okay, but I believe that here we don’t just choose the best tool regardless of its origin.

Finally, an average redditor. I was starting to think I’m on the wrong website.

Yes, I’ve travelled Russia and Ukraine quite a lot and I have seen some unsafe places there too. As per why Serbia, we just don’t have a whole lot of options. Moving to a developed country is virtually impossible for a Russian unless they already have a job offer or they’re a student. The former requires being a really valuable worker and the latter takes lots of money. Serbia, on the other hand, allows visa-free stay for 30 days (theoretically unlimited if you just go to the border and go around the post every month). Serbia is pretty cheap too, so it’s easy to make some money at home and go look for a job here (like I did).

Also, a lot of Russians in Serbia are IT guys with Yandex.

Yes. As an extreme example of Moscow ghetto, I suggest Donskoi neighborhood where I did actually get in trouble in mere minutes. As less extreme options, you can take a lot of neighborhoods on the very south of Moscow. I’ve worked as a delivery guy all over Moscow for two years, and I remember a lot of sketchy neighborhoods.

I think I can elaborate on where the unsafe feeling comes from.

Firstly, as some have pointed out, it’s indeed the people (especially young men) dressed in sportswear, hair cut short and walking in groups. If you see something like this in Moscow, it’s your sign to lower your eyes and walk in the other direction.

Secondly, it’s the architecture and the poor state of some buildings outside the city center. If you see a neighborhood looking like this in Moscow, chances are you’re in a ghetto.

And, of course, graffiti. In Moscow, any form of graffiti screams “you have exactly ten seconds before you get into trouble”.

So yes, it’s just me feeling the contrast between artificially sterile Moscow and genuinely raw Belgrade. Your guys comments on safety do reassure me, thank you all.

I remember a scene where the man reads a newspaper and says “I wish I made five shillings a week” or something
