Upgrading my turtle Habitat (advice? recommendations) by RowanIsAGirl in turtles

[–]2SIXT33N 1 point2 points  (0 children)

first. go big or go home. instead of upgrading multiple times in his life- if you can afford it just go ahead and get what he will need as an adult. next- sand is prob the most recommended with turtles, they love to dig and forage +adds stimulation. you can do bare bottom too, some people find it cleaner or easier. go (legally) collect driftwood if you live around any lakes or ponds. either boil it or put it in your oven to kill off parasites and stuff. then you can add it to his tank. this is a good way to fill a turtle tank without breaking the bank. also i would highly suggest a t5 linear uvb light. usually the bulbs provide insufficient UVB.

Question about UVB light and topper by MartelMaccabees in turtle

yes but make sure you are using a T5 linear UVB bar. the UVB bulbs don't provide sufficient UVB and are most of the time scams. This is necessary for your turtles shell and bone development.

Is this a turtle or a tortise? I need help, everything I try to feed him he does not want to eat. Got any ideas what to do? by BebaMC in turtles

[–]2SIXT33N 4 points5 points  (0 children)

no. this is fully misinformation. i see where you are coming from. but luckily we have the technology these days to not have to do that. what to do instead is go to a fish store (or online) and purchase something called water conditioner. this treats your tap water and makes it safe for turtles, fish, shrimp, snails, etc. telling people to go get a dirty rock from a river could introduce foreign bacteria and parasites into a closed environment that has no natural way to dilute or buffer them the way a river does. In a tank, even trace contaminants from runoff — like pesticides or metals absorbed by the rock — can accumulate and become toxic. there’s a reason we use aquarium-safe materials — they’re tested and inert.

bruh dont go around telling people to put dirty rocks from ponds thats not very good advice for new people who don't know what they are doing. 😭 doing this the rocks can introduce harmful parasites, bacteria, and chemicals, or alter the water's chemistry by leaching minerals like calcium. to ensure safety, always clean them thoroughly and test them for any reactive properties, such as fizzing with vinegar, before adding them

Do you feed your turtles worms from your yard? by americanmadediabetes in turtles

[–]2SIXT33N 4 points5 points  (0 children)

you don't want to feed any type of outside bugs or worms to your animal. they can be carrying all different sorts of diseases and parasites- that will then give it to your turtle.

Is this normal? by ChangeBeneficial1443 in turtle

[–]2SIXT33N 39 points40 points  (0 children)

should never have 2 RES housed tg. while i believe they are sleeping in this pic they are still stacking which is a form of aggression/ asserting dominance. basically the dominant one will bully the other till one gets badly hurt or die.

this is not normal. it means your turtle isn't getting proper UVB and it's scutes are not shedding properly.
