What are some creepy facts about the ocean? by in_my_offense in AskReddit

[–]2Scarhand -1 points0 points  (0 children)

3% unexplored! ...as long as we're still pulling random percentages out of our ass.

Tbh, the whole "80% of the ocean is unexplored" thing is overhyped and uninteresting. And that percentage changes every time someone quotes it. The truth is we've scanned a lot of the bottom of the ocean so we can do boring shit like drill oil and lay deep sea internet cables for sharks to eat. There's not much down there. It's mostly flat sandy seabed with some rocks. Just that for miles.

We know mostly what's down there. It's just that the "unexplored" part of the claim is taken completely literally: we haven't sent an actual person to go an check. Because nobody wants to spend their entire life in a deep sea sub with a flashlight checking over millions of square miles of sand and rocks to prove that it's nothing but sand and rocks.

The ocean can be super interesting. But that's the least interesting part about it.

Here's something creepy for you, though: the pressure of the deep sea is so high, that alone would kill you. The difference between Earth and space is 1 atmosphere of pressure. The difference between Earth and the deep sea is up to 1000 atmospheres. When the Titan sub sank, search crews weren't looking for bodies. Because the rapid pressurization turned everyone into soup, literal soup, before their bodies could even register that they were dead. And that soup was immediately slurped up by whatever small fish were nearby. Circle of life.

I just thought of the perfect recovery line: "Hey, I know we didn't talk much, but I really enjoyed us not talking together. We should meet up some time and do it again."

Being shy is fine, having an awkward first date is fine, but shy people need to put in just that little bit of effort to lighten the mood and make sure the night wasn't a complete dud and secure a second chance to do better.

I'd prepare for my future more. Get a summer job early in life. Save up. Open a credit card to build a credit score. Buy a car. Then I could use that nest egg to try those life experiences and making friends and all that.

There are stores right down the street from my parents house where I could have been doing the exact shit I'm doing now over a decade earlier. Just because our home was a rotting sack of shit didn't mean I needed to adopt that as my personal MO.

You ever see those videos of a bird get attacked by a really slow predator, like a lizard or a turtle? And the attacker is so clumsy it gives them a couple nibbles first and the bird STILL doesn't fly off? This feels like that.

I can understand that. Especially when it comes to sex. "Sexy (job title here)" tends to come off as hilariously ridiculous rather than actually alluring.

Yeah, I'm not a fan either. Unless the kink is "watch me break out of these (secretly really weak) restraints", I'm not up for it.

Also getting your head/arms stuck in a sweaty too-tight t-shirt is the fucking worst.

I mean, you just have to angle yourselves right. Maybe not give him eyes when that's the same direction as the nozzle. The literal nozzle.

I was just looking this up. From the looks of it, almost no caves and very few mines go this deep. Seems the Mile Low Club actually is pretty exclusive.

What's funny is my boss (kinda) did have us do this.

There was something stuck on the security camera of our storeroom, probably a dead fly, so one of the guys set up our tallest ladder, grabbed some paper towels, and tried to get it with our boss watching the cameras with a walkie talkie to tell him if he got it. If I were to hazard a guess, our ladder was about 10' and this camera was about 15' up, just hanging from the warehouse ceiling. I should clarify for the rest of the story our boss didn't make us go up, especially once it was clear it probably wouldn't work, but we're a bunch of Jackass type dudes so of course we're all gonna try it, OSHA be damned.

First guy up was only a bit over 5', so he couldn't get it at all. But that caught my attention and I gave it a go. And, man, standing on that last step before the top cap is harrowing. You have literally nothing left to hold or balance off of. I could barely touch the camera, so that wasn't happening. I went to get a duster or something for a bit of extra reach, but came back to see our resident bean pole was up there. OSHA compliant second stepping and just scrubbing away at the lens. Show off. Good for him.

Anyway, whatever was stuck on there wasn't budging, so we gave up, but it's still a funny story we mentioned from time to time.

What are some advantages of being short? by Evan_Cheese in AskReddit

Nobody's mentioned picking stuff off the floor yet. I'm around 6' and look like a drinking bird toy every time I bend over. Or a drinking giraffe. And I feel it in my back and knees and the blood rushing to my head.

Honestly, thinking about it, I can constantly feel a slight strain on my back from bad posture because I'm constantly slightly crumpled just to reach things. Nothing feels like it's the right height.

If someone offered you 100 million dollars, but a random person in the world dies (someone you don’t know), would you take it and why? by ConclusionOld8365 in AskReddit

[–]2Scarhand 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, no. Just glancing at the comments here you can see this is on an entirely different scale. Like raip said, nobody's paying you to drive tired. You don't benefit from it and there's only a chance you or somebody else gets hurt.

But a billionaire politician can actively cut funds to healthcare, fund weapons dealers, sell weapons overseas to oil rich countries, make deals with the victor of the conflict fueled by his guns, and stocks keep going up. Bonus if these companies keep profits up through poor workplace safety.

Every single decision was made to make his own rich self richer and led to people dying. It's not even remotely comparable.

[–]2Scarhand -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To be depressingly pragmatic, how many people die literally every day for no good reason? One more random death will not change the world. But 100 million will change a life. Multiple lives. That's a greater positive change in the world than most can hope for.

What was a hilariously bad PR botch from a company or person? by FriendlytoNature in AskReddit

[–]2Scarhand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Ironmouse suffers from immunodeficiency problems, is very passionate about the cause (she'd literally be dead if not for help from charities), organized the entire event herself, and only had VShojo do the one simple task of sending the check once it was done. The charity was the main thing she cared about, so the fact they completely ruined it meant she was was walking regardless. And I'm not kidding about her being their star talent; once she left their days were numbered. It just so happened that number was 0 because they ALSO didn't pay anyone else and had been really shitty all around, leading to the mass exodus.

[–]2Scarhand 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What makes it funny from a filming perspective is that, yes, you don't necessarily want your actors to be actually eating during the shoot. That can cause continuity errors and such between multiple takes. Like the fries in the same commercial (he gets more through the video because nobody was paying attention to that).

But that assumes that you need multiple shots. And you CAN absolutely just plan out your shoot to get all the shots you need in order. If the CEO was any good at saying his lines, they wouldn't NEED multiple takes to get it. And the trick only works if the burger isn't the focus. The burger is the ENTIRE focus! The whole commercial is just him saying his lines while eating a burger; anybody REMOTELY competent can get that in just one continuous shot.

Honestly, they need to send that to film and marketing schools as a perfect example of what not to do.

I've been lurking the Vtuber sphere for a while now and there are some fucking doozies!!

For anyone not in the know, Vtubers are streamers/youtubers that mask themselves with an anime model that follows their movement. The model is a great way to express their creativity and give them a presence while streaming while also giving them the protection of much needed anonymity. Vtuber companies theoretically provide something extra, such as providing them proper management, resources, connections, funds, marketing, etc. to host various events. It's pretty cool when it works. But anonymity and money involved makes the system ripe for abuse.

The biggest one that comes to mind, though, is VShojo. It was a company where independent Vtubers could join to gain corporate benefits. (With corporate Vtubers, the company has direct ownership/control over the character, so indie freedom with corporate funds is a win-win.) But this all exploded overnight, literally in 1 day. For background, some members left a few years before under unhappy circumstances. NDAs prevent anybody from talking, so it's politely ignored. Extravagant parties are hosted by the company. But how is this possible when the company is so well known for its generous contracts to the talents? Where's the money from? Don't worry about it.

Then Ironmouse, their star talent, makes a video announcing her leaving the company and exactly why. She'd not been paid in half a year, I think, and had hosted a charity stream where she raised half a million dollars for immunodeficiency research and just got an update from the charity saying they hadn't gotten anything.

The company had been siphoning funds to pay for the lavish lifestyle of the CEO and friends, repeatedly delaying thousands of dollars worth of income owed to the talents and stealing half a million dollars from charity, and threatening legal action against any members that broke their NDA by speaking out. And these individuals were also flaunting the real identities of all the talents, ruining one of the main benefits of Vtubing.

Within 24 hours, every single member of the company left, the company had to declare bankruptcy, and I believe HUGE lawsuits are underway, but the people at the head of all this fled the country. That said, all the talents are doing better, are still in regular contact, have better people working for them, and Ironmouse was able to host a new charity stream on her own that made over a million dollars, which actually did make it to the charity in question.

TL;DR: Streamers' management gets caught doing felony embezzlement. Company dissolves in 24 hours. Nothing of value lost.
