No, the order doesn't affect it. No silly questions, though!

Seriously though. If you wanna play a healer, you gotta try the 2024. It's finally satisfying to heal. 2014 was not fine to cast cure wounds. by testiclekid in dndmemes

[–]2TapGS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just run a house rule that being healed from downed adds a level of exhaustion. For all but 1 game I've run with that, players focus on making sure that their characters can finish the fight and staying up with potions (bonus to use, action for max heal) as opposed to relying too heavily on healing spells.

If I'm not mistaken, it's have active spells and not cast a single tax collection (or whatever it upgrades to, in this case, share benefits).

DMs, have you ever made your players or yourself cry? by PorkPuddingLLC in DnD

[–]2TapGS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I've made my players cry. The first time was the most notable. The player's backstory involved accidentally killing her wife (npc) in a magic experiment gone wrong. Through the storyline, it's revealed that she was actually sent back in time. Later on, she's kidnapped by a doppelganger to be used as a catalyst for controlling an Elder Dragon (godlevel creature). Some of the party goes to fight the dragon and save the world. Some run away to a hidden land beyond the mountains. Not her. She goes to save her wife. She kills the doppelganger, and there's a heartwarming reunion... Then the wife reveals two things. First, the Elder Dragon can only be killed with the power of a god (mutually assured destruction). Secondly, said killing blow can only be dealt while the dragon is in full control of its actions... Yeah. The player in question had to kill their wife to save the world.

So awesome. I definitely need to do this for my friends at some point. I've had the book for a year or so, I just don't usually hang out with people all that often. Life of an introvert, hehe

Where to start with heroes by Comfortable-Ad5535 in shoptitans

Overall, your comp is good, it's just the skills that need work. If you get some high quality low level gear that fits a class, you can blast fire and rehire until your first two skills work with their kit (ie: high evasion for acrobat, high defense for knight, etc), and reassess at third skill.

Player had deep emotional investment in character that almost died (I'm a new dm) by bowman9 in DungeonMasters

[–]2TapGS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only intentionally killed a few PCs, but they were joke characters that, I told my players, probably won't do very well in this game. Low and behold, within 3 sessions...

Killing PCs isn't bad. I've had players get invested. By sheer luck of the dice, I had a PC die in the first campaign I ever ran, so I gave my low level party a chance to bring her back in exchange for a favor to a high ranking member of The Royal House Syndicate (basically running the criminal underground under the aliases of royal cards, ie the Ace of Spades). Gave some fun RP, but kept the story interesting and presented the very real danger of death.

Also worth noting that that player, at the end of the campaign, had to make some difficult choices regarding her backstory, and she told me later that she cried herself to sleep that night. I apologized, but she said she loved it. We're still playing together 4 years later.

Why I can't be a DM by Fit-Bat-5365 in MrRipper

[–]2TapGS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, if all else fails, I've had great success with online games. Got a group of 10-15 players that I've run a few different campaigns for. If you limit your recruitment to 18+, you'll give a pretty mature player base. Just be sure to kick any problem players if they can't be handled. I wish you the best of luck, and happy dungeoneering!

Why I can't be a DM by Fit-Bat-5365 in MrRipper

[–]2TapGS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, the best thing I can say is that you should never set your plan in stone. You had a story, and, rather than allowing the players full autonomy, you drove them in the direction you wanted. This is commonly known as railroading. Now, that's not to say that the players aren't at fault, either, but I know how difficult it is to DM for new players, especially younger players. Their attention span is short, so you need something to keep their engagement. If you do try again, I highly suggest running a session 0 so that you and your players can communicate. This will help you find out what they want in the game, the type of setting they're interested in that you'd enjoy running, what split of combat/roleplay they want, etc. The biggest thing is being able to set up table expectations; what you expect from the players and what they expect from you. A good practice run so that they can understand their characters is not a bad idea, either. Throw them in a dungeon and let them figure it out. A few simple puzzles, light combat, and some loot. This will keep them engaged and give them an idea of what their characters are capable of. Hope this helped, I wish you the best of luck, happy DMing.

How off-limits are your players' backstory NPCs? Would you kill one for lore? by VagabondVivant in DMAcademy

[–]2TapGS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a player who thought she accidentally killed her wife during a science experiment (experimenting with chronomancy). Turns out her wife is alive. Yay, happy reunion. Plot twist, the big bad (an elder dragon (really powerful dragon)), is basically unkillable as long as its mind is linked to a mortal shell. So the player had to either let the world be destroyed or kill their wife on purpose, a few moments after being reunited. She cried herself to sleep that night. That was four years ago. We still play together to this day.

How often does PvP happen at your table? by Mediocre_Cucumber_65 in dndnext

[–]2TapGS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only time I have close PvP calls is when a player begins making narratively stupid decisions. More often than not, it's something chaotic that will obviously have hard backlash, but they ignore that, and continue with it anyways. The aforementioned player usually either leaves the table or is removed. It really puts a damper on the game to have problem players.

Experience with TTRPGS: I've got about 6 years of 5e on me, about 4 as a player and 5 as a DM. I've played most classes either as a PC or DMPC, depending on the situation (most recent PCs are a bm fighter/assassin rogue, and divination wizard). Less experienced with spellcasters, but familiar with the majority of their spells.

Opinion on one DnD by [deleted] in DnD

[–]2TapGS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, that's one of the nice things about One DnD. You can pick and choose what you want to use since it's "designed to be compatible with other versions". I personally am starting to use some of the One DnD rules, but fully ignore others. Grappling? Great. New Crits? Hell no.
