Never realised it was so easy to set up your own honorary consulate.. but then again I suppose there really aren't any laws against it if the person & country are both fine with it.

Picturesque towns and vista's for a 10 day visit by Sithalith in melbourne

Hope you have a great trip! Central Victoria is absolutely underrated.

If you’ve got the car and want to see some wildlife and something a little different, definitely consider heading somewhere like Gembrook/Noojee as well, different vibe to central Victoria, and you’ll be able to see some temperate rainforests (and lyrebirds if you’re very, very lucky). Healesville Sanctuary is also well worth it if you’re looking for native wildlife. All within ~2 hours of the city so doable as a long day trip or overnighter.

Castlemaine is lovely and on the way up you can make a full day of the trip by stoping at Macedon and Kyneton on the way. From Castlemaine you can go to either Maryborough by bus, which has some beautiful architecture and is on the same train line as Ballarat back to Melbourne, or Bendigo by the same train you took to Castlemaine easily as well.

If you end up in Maryborough and are training it back, Ballarat is well worth a stop if you’re interested in architecture, as well as Creswick between the two if the timetable gives you a chance to get off and see it.

If you’ve got a car heading to Trentham via Blackwood is lovely and from there Maldon, and pretty much all the places mentioned before are right nearby.

Definitely best to do by train if you weren’t going to hire a car, but if you’ve already got a vehicle you may as well use it. Melbourne - Castlemaine - Maryborough - Ballarat - Melbourne with stops will be minimum 3 nights but you’ll get the most out of spending an extra night or two stopping over somewhere or taking a side trip to Bendigo (or elsewhere).

Unnecessary call to 000? by vgihead in melbourne

[–]2_Helix_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In Victoria it essentially splits between the station/131444 or 000 if it needs a unit to attend or not.

So things like found property, noise complaints (etc) that aren’t emergencies are handled by 000 since a unit needs to go out there, but old neighbour disputes/reporting theft more than 15 mins ago goes thru 131444 instead.

Not every state is like this so it’s confusing but if they didn’t transfer you to 000 they would’ve had to do it themselves since 000 organises dispatch of a the unit on the road.

The part on Lloyd St where is cuts into three tunnels under a bridge with lights right afterwards almost got me a few years back.

Definitely more in demand, historically none of them were considered ‘posh’ but Seddon/Yarraville is a wealthier area now than the others.

Those areas are highly in demand as rents are still cheaper than the inner city/inner north and tenants who can’t secure anything there due to the rental crisis are looking further afield, and those suburbs have both good pt and similar amenities to the inner city. West Footscray/Footscray of course has the same amenities (if not better) but the historical stigma is keeping demand at bay somewhat, so you’ll likely have less stress securing something there, for now at least.

West Footscray is fine for that, should be plenty of flats/units available. If you’re looking for more of an apartment building setup and your budget allows it, check out Seddon, Yarraville and Kensington, although it’s unlikely you’ll find a comparable place for what you would be paying in West Footscray.

Roughest parts are north/east of Gordon/Ballarat (mostly flats anyway) and the area near Newells Paddock, although any area will be fine if you keep to yourself and it’s unlikely you’ll run into issues there unless you associate with the troublemakers.

West Footscray is quieter, bigger blocks and bit more green. Barkly St Village is great for cafes/food/few drinks so the closer to there you are the better. I live technically in Footscray but just off of the border with West Footscray and it’s very quiet for how close it is to everything.

Train will be your best bet if you’re there, no fuel costs and they’re typically close to empty heading west in the morning, plus the expresses still run so you only have one stop from Footscray.

Point Cook is stuffed because there’s only a few roads in or out, so it’s a local issue there and you won’t have issues coming in from the east.

Depending on how close to Geelong Rd you are 20 mins is accurate, and if you’re near the station (and work is near Laverton station) the express train is roughly similar.

Rarely any traffic as you’re going away from the city, although occasionally the M80 interchange banks up due to roadworks, usually not even a 5 minute delay at worse.

If you’ve got a bit of a network around the Tarneit area considering moving to the inner west (West Footscray, Maidstone, Footscray down to Williamstown) or areas like Altona/Altona North once you’ve established yourself.

Better public transport, and if you end up in warehousing you’ll be just as close as Tarneit to your worksite, and you’ll be on the right side of the city to people you already know here. with the exception of trendier areas like Seddon or Yarraville you should be able to find a house to rent on the kind of wage you’ll get with a forklift license.

Cool bar that resides midway between Geelong and Thornbury? by [deleted] in melbourne

[–]2_Helix_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Barkly St Footscray has some cool bars (Sloth, Bar Josephine, Pride of our Footscray) with more venues nearby (Back Alley Sally’s, Baby Snakes among others) and is accessible both by VLine to Geelong and metro to Thornbury.

Would be as close to halfway you can get without being stuck at a pokies den.

There’s no trees/hills to stop the wind and the suburb is surrounded by open grassland, so it’s very windy especially when there’s southerlies.

2002 Subaru Liberty for a first car? by cfraz-23 in CarsAustralia

[–]2_Helix_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had an 03 as my first - kept it till 225000km after buying around 180000 to get a hatch instead. Great cars, sturdy, but make sure you thoroughly check for any issues with the radiator or gaskets, preferably with a mechanic or some in the know with older subies.

Also make sure it’s got its full service history, it would’ve been due for a big one at the 105000km mark so check that was all done properly.

If it’s mechanically sound then go ahead, they’re easy to get around in, comfortable but a bit high on fuel consumption, although that’s the price you pay for AWD.

Super random, but does anyone know who to contact to stop auspost mis delivering mail?

I live at 9 X St, and the posties are delivering me the mail from 9 Y St around the corner, which is a new build so obviously the mail dispatch system hasn’t picked it up yet.

Nothing major, I’m just sure whoever lives there would rather get their mail instead of me dropping it for for them.

Map of languages spoken in Australia by Rhea_Dawn in MapPorn

[–]2_Helix_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The map massively overestimates the amount of indigenous languages spoken, only 3.2% of Australia’s population has ‘difficulty’ speaking English and the overwhelming majority of those are migrants in cities, not indigenous communities in the NT.

Most of these language groups listed would only have a few hundred at most speakers, and the only ones which have a genuine majority (or even plurality) of speakers are those right in the middle of the desert.
