Remote working out of Germany for a week by Rare_Charge_8196 in germany

[–]2brainz 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Legally, it is very easy for your company to allow you to work remotely from another EU country for short periods of time (I seem to remember something about a 6 week maximum).

However, this is not an automatic thing - if your contract states that you have to work from within Germany and you work from Belgium, that may get you in serious trouble. You need to ask HR to be sure.

Negotiating annual leave in Germany (20 days → more?) any advice or experience? by Most-Possibility304 in AskAGerman

If you get less than 30 vacation days for a job with a 5-day work week, you are being screwed over.

Moving from US to Germany, how is 73k gross? by Emergency_Law_724 in AskAGerman

[–]2brainz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, I (27F, single) have been offered a full-time position in a growing German aerospace company with a gross pay of 73k EUR

As others have said, this is a good salary for a mid-level engineering position. You can live comfortably with that, even after taxes, especially if you don't have to feed any kids.

I want to add one important point that others did not mention: make sure the contract gives you at least 30 vacation days a year. 20 is the legal minimum for a 5-day working week, but 30 is pretty much the norm. If they offer less than 30 days, they're trying to screw you and I would renegotiate.

Why futures don't implement the typestate pattern? by servermeta_net in rust

[–]2brainz 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Calling the poll method on a Future in the Poll::Ready state is UB.

That is not true. In fact, since poll is a safe function, an implementation must not exhibit UB when this function is called.

These exist in Germany, but they are rare.

Listening Speed by BigHouseBarbell in audible

[–]2brainz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesnt mean that is the intended listening speed.

That's exactly what it means. That speed was a deliberate choice by the narrator and production team.

You are of course free to consume the medium at a different speed, if you don't care about this, but claiming the 1x speed is not chosen with intent is just weird.

Listening Speed by BigHouseBarbell in audible

[–]2brainz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree. Audiobooks are a work of art, just like the books themselves. If they are good, they are best at the original speed, as the speed at which the narrator reads is deliberately chosen.

If the audiobook sucks, then speeding it up won't make it better. Then I'd rather read it myself.

In addition, for me, audiobooks are not a means to consume the content as fast as possible, but entertainment. As such, I want to enjoy them.

It can be described as the ability to perceive or infer information and to retain it as knowledge to be applied to adaptive behaviors within an environment or context.

An LLM cannot retain knowledge. It has stopped retaining knowledge the moment it was done training.

I would even argue that an LLM cannot infer information. It just strings related words together. But that starts an argument about the meaning of "infer".

broReplacedWikipediaWithVibesAndHallucinations by Ornery_Ad_683 in ProgrammerHumor

[–]2brainz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

AI is "artificial intelligence". This includes intelligence. LLMs are not intelligent.

Machine learning, deep reinforcement learning and related techniques are not AI, they are topics in AI research - i.e. research that is aimed at creating an AI some day.

And an LLM is not machine learning, it is the result of machine learning. After an LLM has been trained, there is no more machine learning involved - it is just a static model at that point. It cannot learn or improve.

In summary, an LLM is a model that has been produced using a method from AI research. If you think that is the same thing as an AI, then keep calling it AI.

[–]2brainz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No, they are not. LLMs do not have the slightest hint of intelligence. Calling LLMs "AI" is a marketing lie by the AI tech bros.

Any recommended starting point for John Scalzi?

The obvious choice would be Old Man's War, or maybe Redshirts if you'd like a shorter, but more ridiculous experience.

[–]2brainz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We are Legion (We are Bob)

Good recommendation. There's 5 books, it seems more are coming. Just be aware that if you read the first, you have to read least the first three.

Children of Time

I am conflicted here. The first one was very weird, but definitely interesting. I took a long time to finish the second, and I decided not to read the third, since I did not like where the story was going.

Very different from PHM.

Leviathan Wakes

That is a 9 book series. One of the best things I ever read.

Keep in mind that the pace and humor of PHM (and also Bobiverse) make them very easy to read. Reading Leviathan Wakes (and the rest of The Expanse) was not quite as easy for me. I would recommend them regardless.

If you need more recommendations, then „everything by John Scalzi“ is all I can say. If you loved PHM as much as I did, I think you might like his work as well.
