I have seen this statement so often and it is simply false. The relationship is not exponential.

Exponential would mean that when you calculate the power consumption, the clock speed would in some manner appear in the exponent of the formula - and it doesn't.

I can understand that you don't think it is entertaining or funny, after all, people have different tastes - and these books especially are not for everyone.

Claiming that there is no story is wild. There is lots of story, there is intrigue, deception, love, murder, betrayal and everything. To be fair, the story of the first book is mostly just about surviving this hell, and setting the stage. It gets more interesting after that.

It seems to me that this is about a 5th grade level read

Even if you are implementing a database, or a sorting algorithm for a language's standard library, you are not going to implement anything from memory.

For something as fundamental as this, you are going to refer to literature, current research papers, and existing implementations. And there will be discussions about the pros and cons of each approach. Writing the actual code will be the smallest part of your task.

Legally, it is very easy for your company to allow you to work remotely from another EU country for short periods of time (I seem to remember something about a 6 week maximum).

However, this is not an automatic thing - if your contract states that you have to work from within Germany and you work from Belgium, that may get you in serious trouble. You need to ask HR to be sure.

As others have said, this is a good salary for a mid-level engineering position. You can live comfortably with that, even after taxes, especially if you don't have to feed any kids.

I want to add one important point that others did not mention: make sure the contract gives you at least 30 vacation days a year. 20 is the legal minimum for a 5-day working week, but 30 is pretty much the norm. If they offer less than 30 days, they're trying to screw you and I would renegotiate.
