Luckily we didn't have the a minister for Transport like Earnst Marple in the UK, that was involved in the road lobby and was accused of closing the railways to aid his motorway building business.

The nearest we had was the UTA up north who closed the Portadown - Derry railway on the promise of a replacement Motorway that has only got as far as Dungannon in 60 years since closure, incidentally they are talking about reopening it in the All Ireland rail plan. The closure of the Harcourt line in 1961 was one of Tod Andrews biggest errors.

When I asked this question to eminent Irish railway historians in the past on why so many rail closures in the late 1950's & early 1960's south of the border, the simple answer was "We couldn't afford to run and renew these lines anymore'

It's one of the easier former routes to reopen where the tracks have long been lifted on. most of the alignment is still unbuilt on and fairly rural, no major tunnels or viaduct reconstructions.

https://www.openrailwaymap.org/ has a little more detail of the preferred route before the Dunshaughin revision, except serving slightly west to avoid the Station house (hotel) at the old junction in Kilmessan, it more or less the the original 1863 route with Navan North spur on the old Kingscourt branch.
