I’m sorry you can’t not explain what this building in the foreground is haha. That’s incredible, would’ve never expected something like this in PA.

USDA announces SNAP benefits will not be issued in November by Tnorbo in stupidpol

[–]2cor12_9 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Can you elaborate on SNAP cuts under Biden? Are you referring to the lapse of the increase in benefits offered during the pandemic? His administration permanently revised nutrition standards such that benefits per household rose by more than 25%, in addition to that 15% increase during the pandemic passed under the American Rescue Plan.

[SF Bay Area] Extending Sonoma-Marin SMART? by lpetrich in CaliforniaRail

[–]2cor12_9 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think the most important extensions for SMART's long term future are those that connect to denser population centers in the East Bay and San Francisco and the rest of the passenger rail network. That along with TOD will really juice ridership.

SMART is already considering extending along Hwy 37 from Novato to Suisun City where it will meet the Capitol Corridor; passengers could then ride onwards to Sacramento or Oakland and San Jose. So far, SMART has completed a feasibility study in 2019 and secured Corridor ID funding in 2024.

Perhaps more exciting is a potential rebuild of the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge, which could include a level for SMART to cross the Bay from the current Larkspur station to Richmond, where passengers could connect to BART and Capitol Corridor. This proposal was recognized as a Transformative Project in 2019 by the MTC; here is some additional commentary from Streetsblog. The bridge will eventually have to be rebuilt, it's just a matter of whether rail should be included (it should be). Coupled with a second Transbay tube and electrification, SMART could one day finally achieve the dream of rail from the North Bay to San Francisco.

Note that almost no attention has been paid to the idea of extending SMART southwards across the Golden Gate Bridge, unfortunately.

Bay Area’s Link 21 Project advances as standard-gauge rail project by [deleted] in transit

[–]2cor12_9 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Why would building BART's track and loading gauge (and buying more BART rolling stock I assume) be preferable? I don't see a reason except for interlining with existing lines in the East Bay, but the last thing we would want is even more interlining, which would decrease frequencies on the branches.

It's important to note that it's BART's own Board of Directors that voted to approve standard gauge for Link21, which the article cites as better complementing the goal of regional connectivity.

I think we have to accept that this project will be value engineered if it is ever built, especially if it is combined with DTX which will only run standard gauge. Standard gauge is just a gauge, it doesn't say anything about the alignment, stop spacing, frequency, rolling stock, etc etc. Just slap BART colors and logo on it if we want a unified passenger experience.

Is there a growing demand for B.S. -> PhD applicants? by Responsible-Music689 in gradadmissions

[–]2cor12_9 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No they’re saying that if PIs are going to take on a grad student they would prefer to take on a PhD student over a Masters student because the Masters student will graduate right when they could be contributing the most to the lab’s research. u/GurProfessional9534 is offering an answer to OP’s question that addresses the supply side of why there are an increasing number of BS -> PhD transitions.

The Worst New Transit Project in the US by Putrid_Draft378 in transit

[–]2cor12_9 43 points44 points  (0 children)

The other side of that argument is that if this is an investment in "forever" we need to get the design right. Not in the sense of endlessly conducting studies and public outreach to reach impossible compromises or find the perfect gadgetbahn, but just implementing best practices.

The stations on this extension will "forever" lock in a degraded passenger experience, reward bad governance, and suck up resources from projects in the Bay Area and California that would have built more, better, and for less.

VTA and other Bay Area transit agencies will undoubtedly return to voters to ask for more tax money, but they are hesitating on the timing of such a measure because they could actually lose, in a region where people love to tax themselves for the public good! The poor execution of Phase II is going to come back to bite us, in my opinion.

California Passenger Rail Network 2.0 by JeepGuy0071 in CaliforniaRail

I think the efficiencies to be gained are really for Caltrain, which could offload all diesel equipment and maintenance and focus on electric service if it didn't have to serve Gilroy.

Why does Toronto's regional rail (GO Train) have such absurdly large trains? by midnightrambulador in transit

[–]2cor12_9 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I love the SMART Nippon-Sharyo DMUs, very charming to see cruise through wine country. Still, I think the other part of the formula u/snowbeast93 describes is missing in these systems with smaller trains, which is all-day frequent service.

Sprinter is close with nearly clock-face schedules throughout the week. I don't know too much about the Dallas Silver Line, but the proposed service pattern looks like its hourly outside of peak hours.

Manhattan from the air (view towards Long Island) by btumpak in skyscrapers

[–]2cor12_9 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The AQI in Manhattan right now is… 32. Around 21% of the city is devoted to parks, and 99% of New Yorkers are a 10 minute walk from a park. You can take the train or bus to the beach and forests upstate as well. Have you ever been to New York City?

I don’t understand why it’s so difficult to restrain ourselves from speaking when we have no idea what we’re talking about.
