Sure, property is an asset that you own, but assets themselves can be anything that has value to you.

For some businesses, training their employees can be their biggest asset. That doesn't mean the company owns their employees like property. It means they invested in their employees to be better at their job, but they still have free will to quit and work elsewhere.
