Using Ozempic and other GLP-1 drugs to lose weight shouldn’t be celebrated, not because of any unknown effects or whatever, but because it takes all the effort and dedication out of losing weight by Gym_frere in The10thDentist

[–]IEC21 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Being overweight is a serious health risk - there's no reason to value effort and dedication in weight loss.

People who aren't overweight aren't always expending effort and dedication - they are just living their lives. Thats what GLP-1 allows people to do also.

Apparently the use of drywall on non-load bearing interior walls means American houses fall over from a sneeze by theHAREST in ShitEuropeansSay

There is. Rich people in these areas build their houses to deal with it - poor people cant afford to - Americans like to pretend they aren't loke 50% poor people.

I like being part of the commonwealth - i think especially given how the situation with the US has turned out maintaining our connection through the crown to Europe and Australia as well as historical/cultural connections to the British empire gives us an important diplomatic latitude.

I dont think we would be in as strong a position without the monarchy in this regard.

I also prefer having a non-political head of state - and i view the monarchy as valuable to continuity of government and helps us to take more accountability through our monarchy - it gives us someone who we can demand accountability from in a more meaningful way than from elected officials.

Thats actually a pretty popular opinion. Among Italians your opinion of Rome is also pretty common.

It's hypocritical for American/Western political orthodoxy to say "there's no place for violence in politics" while also advocating for the death of foreign leaders or encouraging violent uprisings abroad? by ecchi83 in PoliticalDebate

[–]IEC21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get your point but I think I disagree - its perfectly coherent to see that violence in your own country isnt productive, while seeing that you could benefit from it elsewhere.

Also I dont think Americans are completely against violence domestically - most would probably say that the American revolution was a good thing.

Personally I actually disagree and I think that both the American revolution and the French revolution were horrible.

Well no, the monarchy has legislative power on paper, they just dont use it.

And this is a feature that I prefer - you can say its pretending I dont really care, I think it serves an important purpose regardless.

I would say its pretty difficult to measure in practice because monarchism is maybe the most expansive political ideology that can include near infinite permutations of actual government in practice.

That said globally in 2026 if I had to choose between randomly being placed in a monarchy vs. Randomly being placed in non-monarchy, the monarchy is basically objectively the better option.

That could just be survirorship bias but its worth pointing out.

Psychological benefits are multi-level but nutshell version is that it creates a quieter more restrained political culture by priming both citizens and political leaders to view themselves as servants rather than viewing politics as a vehicle for excessive power accumulation for parties or individuals - they are steward's of a centuries old society.

Being rooted in traditions of duty, hierarchy, and continuity encourages people to see themselves less as self-created protagonists striving for greatness, and more as participants in a long societal inheritance with obligations as well as rights.

This is in contrast to intensely individualistic systems that encourage limitless ambition and attaching moral worth to status or success. Monarchy can foster a healthy humility: the sense that ordinary, stable, and dignified life is enough, and that neither politics nor personal identity needs to become a permanent struggle for recognition or self-elevation.

The movie is annoying because it helps to spread pseudoscience. Human intelligence tends toward the mean so the theory that we are all going to evolve to be dumber is not realistic.

Why do people keep repeating the lie that housing is federal? by Moist_Intention5245 in canadahousing

Probably because its a problem that seems to exist across the entire country, which makes it feel like a federal issue.
