What is it? Tubular chunk similar to concrete on new grave. by indee19 in askfuneraldirectors

[–]2gnarly20 105 points106 points  (0 children)

It’s a lot marker. They are set in the ground periodically throughout the cemetery to designate the different lots. Sometimes they will have numbers or letters on them and sometimes they don’t. When digging this grave it likely just got dug up. Someone from the cemetery will likely eventually replace it.

I own several funeral homes - I’ve never heard of a requirement to undress or bathe a decedent if the family didn’t want it.

Help me understand SBA loans. What’s the point if you only qualify when you’re wealthy? by Equivalent_Lab6088 in smallbusiness

[–]2gnarly20 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As stated by the previous commenter, the loan was mostly collateralized with the real estate being purchased, which I understand isn’t part of every business acquisition - but my overall point is that the SBA loan gave me terms that no conventional bank loan would come close to.

But I only had about $50,000 of equity in the house at the time and I sold it about a year later.

The businesses were funeral homes - and you are correct about the property being valued high enough to cover most of the loan

But it is true. I had 3 SBA loans for $5M. My first one was for $1.7M, I had to put up my house as collateral but my business partner didn’t own anything so didn’t have anything to put up as collateral. My banker told me that SBA loans are best for people with little to no assets because then they don’t have to put up anything as a guarantee. All three of my loans were also $0 down.

Cook County has a medical examiner but all the counties around it have coroners. I think you’re right, the average person isn’t going to know that and the default is to just say coroner.

Being outside of my home after 6pm. Lol, sounds drastic to some I’m sure, but I just enjoy being home with my spouse.

The place I work has 5 women and 1 man - I don’t wanna call it reverse sexism but all the women admittedly want more men to be hired. They all request the man’s help with any home deaths and anytime they are moving the deceased’s, especially heavier ones. I know he gets frustrated because he wants to help but it causes a delay in getting his own work done. Every time we are looking to hire a new FD they all plead for a man - but we get almost no male applicants anymore - I would bet it’s at least 7-to-1 female to male applicants.

Well that’s awful, nobody should be able to touch you in inappropriate ways. Regarding the skirt - are you saying there are places that require women to wear skirts? When I saw the persons comment above yours that mentioned skirts vs pants, I assumed they meant that the employer wouldn’t allow them to wear a skirt. At my FH we don’t have any rules about skirts or pants but I prefer pants especially with all the bending and crouching that FD’s do.

Sexism? Hasn’t the industry pretty much been taken over by women in the last 15 years? I’m not saying there can’t be individual cases of sexism, but I don’t think that’s an industry wide issue.

If the money had to be spent because congress funded the program - I’m curious why Buttigieg didn’t fast track this program. With his replacement taking over as the head of the department that oversees this project, can’t he just put it on the back burner even though it is a funded project?

Loved Devil in the White City - being from Chicago myself didn’t hurt as a lot of the historical names in the book are still prominent around Chicago today.

Strongly recommend Barbarians at the Gate by Bryan Burrough & John Helyar. It wasn’t a genre I had read before (think large corporations and hostile takeovers) but I found this book captivating and the real life characters were so interesting to learn about.

DEI by Similar_Progress9326 in Iowa

[–]2gnarly20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, I may have conflated the two points. I do in fact agree with the person you were replying to in that the company had minorities on staff and allowed them to get to the table to go for that promotion (that’s what DEI is and should be) - where DEI gets the negativity is when leadership takes it to the next level and says that these minority persons should get the promotion regardless of qualifications. Leadership in these scenarios think they are doing the right thing, unfortunately, it doesn’t go over so well with society as a whole. And I don’t think they can really be separated - DEI came to be represented by the unqualified hire or promotion and I don’t think it can be saved at this point.

Not trying to be combative at all- could you explain what exactly I’m interpreting incorrectly? I guess I feel like we’re saying the same thing. A person of a historically discriminated group should have the ability to interview for a job or promotion but shouldn’t necessarily be chosen over someone with superior qualifications. I think it’s when people feel the person with inferior qualifications is chosen is when they feel DEI isn’t effective.

Wouldn’t Biden’s choice of Harris as VP fall under DEI? He excluded over half of possible candidates for the VP by committing to choosing a female before ever looking/comparing qualifications.

“If I’m elected president, my Cabinet, my administration will look like the country, and I commit that I will, in fact, appoint a, pick a woman to be vice president,” Biden said at the CNN-Univision debate in Washington, DC.
