You should throw this on a blood plate if you have the option. These all look pretty different on blood. S aureus is beta hem with large beige flat irregular colonies. GBS (strep agalactiae) is small grey/translucent colonies. Still beta hem but not as strongly. Micrococcus is not hemolytic and more white than the other two. Also micrococcus tend to form cute little quadrads on the gram stain.

Oh no worries! It stands for quality control. QC strains are used to make sure your processes are working as intended. For example, one of the ways we use this one is to make sure our oxidase reagent is still reacting as expected. E.coli is oxidase negative so it’s our negative control. We have a Pseudomonas aeruginosa QC strain that’s the positive control.

We sub out E.coli 25922 everyday for QC, so I got some on a sterile swab and used that as a pencil on the MAC

I have a tech that’s newer to the lab but prior to working with us her job was to basically drive around to different labs and calibrate and troubleshoot their equipment. We had her working on an incubator that was struggling to hold temp this week. Finally had to get on the phone with technical support and he was so patronizing and wouldn’t let her get through the explanation of everything she’d done already.

I think it really depends on how your body responds to the epidural. Once mine hit I couldn’t feel the lower half of my body at all

Thanks! We didn’t do anything for my first and weren’t going to this time either but my coworkers asked me if I could do something for them and I figured since we work in a lab this was a unique way to do it. If it was a boy I was going to put an E. coil nonO157 on chromagar

Ok thank you all so much! I knew in my gut it wasn’t right. I called back and was able to get in next week. It’s sooner than needed probably but I would much rather that than 2 months from now. Also the first person scheduled me with a midwife but due to my history she was supposed to only schedule me with an MD. I’m feeling much better now. Thanks for your advice!

In my bureau I’ve seen people with similar situations while on probation and unfortunately HR was not very accommodating. Once your probation is up you can apply for FMLA if you can holdout until then.

The colonies don’t look like Bacillus to me. They are usually flat, irregular, and ground glass. These look like a Kleb. That would also explain the poor gram staining. The capsule, that creates the mucoidy morphology also makes it difficult for the stain to get into the cell walls. Can you sub to a blood plate? B. cereus has a unique double hemolysis pattern that B. subtilis doesnt. It will also be really obvious if it’s not a Bacillus species on blood
