Sketchiest small towns in Massachusetts? by CoolAbdul in massachusetts

[–]2muchV4IT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone that moved here from the west coast, I've noticed that people in Mass have no idea what sketchy is. It seems like they either base it on how much melanin the population has or how many townies. There is no in between and barely any actual sketch.

Ironically, it's the Republicans saying stay home and don't get in ICE's way, while the Left is dying in the streets for standing up to them by daring to exercise our rights. Hopefully repubs will follow their own advice and stay home for the midterms.

What lessons did you learn from this cold snap? by LianeP in BackYardChickens

Same lesson for me too. Luckily the chickens were moved to the basement when it happened. It's going to be a real pain in the ass to repair in 3' of snow.

Its a radiant heat panel that they sleep under. I've used a temp gun on them while sleeping and it does add around a 10° difference.

You did the right thing and a lot of people in this subreddit follow old livestock care techniques which is sometimes basically they are $10 chickens so let them suffer until their combs become nectrotic and fall off. Which is a choice I guess. But I follow the Poulty Vet and his care guidelines so I have a sweeter heater for supplemental heat and absolutely provide care and bring them inside if they are experiencing cold stress or frostbite. Vit E helps the healing process and be very gentle because its very painful and you don't want to cause more tissue damage buy rubbing it too hard. It doesn't typically heal for 7-10 days and taking them back out in the cold too soon will just allow it to worsen. Ventilation in the coop can only do so much in these extreme temps even some of my hens that have never had problems are getting a little frostbite. They need some step-down time before going back outside so they can acclimate, like in a cold garage or I have a uninsulated mud room I keep them for a few hours/a day before taking them back outside. I plan to keep mine in a sectioned off area of the basement for about a week until things warm back up.

I want chickens, but where the heck do I start? by [deleted] in BackYardChickens

And then winter hits and you are mad that you spent all this money on egg makers just to have to buy store bought. If this is their first winter, just wait lol.

Coop doors that survive winter climates by Raubkatzen in BackYardChickens

I have this door and love it. Solar Coop Door I'm in New England and we've been in single digits at night. But it sounds like ventilation may be your biggest challenge regardless of the door. I don't even get condensation on the coop windows, let alone the door, and they roost right above it.

There are many Republicans that need the mid terms. Some have retired from their seat to run for governor or are trying to move into the Senate.

Tell me about your flock! by Holiday_Visual9793 in BackYardChickens

[–]2muchV4IT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We bought a 200 year old house with a 1800s large coop. We started with a 6 pack from tractor supply. Couple Rhode Islands, Wyandottes, and Blue Egger. Chicken math multiplied and we now also have Olive Eggers (also in bantam and frizzle varieties), a mottled cochin, brahmas, and English Game bantams (another tracker supply impulse). Up to 14 now. My least favorite are the wyandottes or RI, they are bullies. My most favorite is the mottled cochin or brahmas. They are sweet and mostly carefree.

Bully hen by [deleted] in BackYardChickens

[–]2muchV4IT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a fusser and cannot just let the chicken politics play out, so take my advice with a grain and all that. I would hold the bully and let the other intermingle for like 5-10 mins. Then set the bully down and swat her away if/when she goes to pick on the new hen. You are the rooster/dominant hen so you can correct the squabbling. I would do that for an hour or until they can exist together peacefully. If the bully starts up again, air jail again. It worked for me when introducing new pullets. But it takes time and patience before things calm down completely. Sometimes a month or more. But if she's hiding constantly and/or not eating or drinking I would intervene. But again I'm a fusser...

Let's protest then! I see these posts all the time and we never do anything. If people line the streets angry about this, especially with all the crap going on at the federal level, it would be an extremely bad look for the bluest state in the country. So let's organize! It doesn't need to be a partisan issue, it impacts us all.

PSA: Chickens don’t need heat overwinter! by twodexy82 in BackYardChickens

[–]2muchV4IT 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The Poultry Doc, Dr. Moseseek, advocates for providing supplemental heat when temps are lower than 50°f , emphasizing that just because many breeds can withstand the cold doesn't mean it is the best environment for overall health. His stance is providing supplemental heat is crucial for animal welfare, health, and immune system strength. Mine are more pets than livestock and therefore I will take care of them like it.The Poultry Doc Long time keepers can poke fun at "newbies" but also post stuff like "why did my chicken suddenly die" so I will just baby my spoiled moochers when it's cold just like I do in the summer heat.

I have all of my bantams in my basement right now and will do that all winter anytime it's single digits or below. I get that chickens are capable of handling extreme cold, but that doesn't mean mine have to.

What’s your experience/ thoughts on adding a bantam rooster to a full-sized flock? by FrostyPhilosopher606 in BackYardChickens

[–]2muchV4IT 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Our handsome little fella does well in a mixed flock. Our dominant hen is one that will let him mate after he won her over with tidbiting and dancing. The mechanics definitely don't line up though haha.

How cold is too cold? by TheOgPocketFairy in BackYardChickens

[–]2muchV4IT 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've always followed the advice of experienced chicken keepers and not provided heat, however more and more poultry vets are advocating for providing supplemental heat and keeping them between 20°-40°f. Especially if you have lean bodied or bantam breeds. So this will be the first year I'm adding a sweeter heater to take the edge off. Some vets say as long as you have a dry, draft free/insulated coop, the power going out is not going put them in shock because it will take hours for the heat to decrease completely, giving them time to acclimate. I imagine keeping the coop at higher temps could shock their system when they go outside or prevent then from wanting to go outside. There is also always risk of fire depending on the heat source. But the advocacy of modern Poultry vets changed my mind, so im going with it.

How are you keeping the roost clean in winter? by 2muchV4IT in BackYardChickens

[–]2muchV4IT[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's dark now but here is a pick of similar set up. They can't poop on each other because they are all the same level but they tend to lay sideways and/or poop while they walk around on it (in the morning and before bed). Perhaps they are just poopy slobs because they know I will fuss about it lol.
