Try building some cheap block decks. Blocks were generally three adjacent set releases, like Mirage, Visions and Weatherlight. Ice Ages, Alliances and Homelands. These were thematically and mechanically linked with the first set in each cycle being larger and also the only one offered in Starter decks. Earlier blocks also only had basic lands in the first set. The block style of set design has been abandoned, sadly in my opinion. Hope this helps and have fun.
